The Abandoned Jamestown Mall

Фильм және анимация

The Jamestown Mall in Florissant MO was opened in 1973. It operated for 42 years until they welded and boarded their doors shut in 2013. Plans have been discussed about demolishing the mall, but those plans have been silent for 2 years now.

I never got the chance to shop there before it closed. I feel I missed out. I'm actually thinking about visiting a few malls like the Alton mall, just to get footage of it while its open. And when it inevitably closes, I could go back and see the aftermath. Would probably be years before I could do that, but that would be amazing, and it doesn't take much effort to film while it's open.

My first memories of being at a mall are from here. My first visit with Santa was here. I remember eating at the diner inside Walgreens and the restaurant on the 4th floor of Stix/Dillard’s with my mother and grandmother. My first computer came from the Sears at Jamestown. It’s hard to believe it’s gone, but then again it’s hard to believe how different malls are in our culture right now.

Great video! I grew up at this mall and visited it last in 2014 before it closed. They just had another fire on April 19, 2023 and they're hoping to fasttrack the demolition because it was so dangerous for the 2 firefighters that were hospitalized. I'll be driving by soon for one last dash cam video from the street and once it's finally demolished. Update: Got a little footage of demo and will check back from time to time.

UPDATE: Last Friday, June 12th, 2 separate fires were set in different parts of the mall at the same time. Firefighters discovered "large piles of furniture" on fire in the old Dillards and Macy's stores, the Black Jack Fire Protection District said. Fortunately, the fire under control within an hour, though I do not know how much damage was actually done. Luckily this didn't happen while we were exploring. Stay safe out there

A ton of memories at that mall. I worked at JW (Jeans West) from 87-90. Before that my mom and dad took me to see Star Wars in 1977. Dad would always hang out at The Ground Round while Mom did her shopping and I hung out at the Camolot record Store and arcade playing Astroids. While I was working at JW a attractive girl that worked at Camolot music took me to a Don Henley concert. Wish there was a way to get in contact with her and the manager of Camolot music. I just can't remeber their names.

Yea, it was pretty surreal being there. Only problem is we had to leave early otherwise we'd get rained out. Also realized I have a serious problem with filming in low light. I resorted to using my phone because that performed the best. I have a new camera on order and should be here this Thursday. Also the wind was so bad I could only have the drone up for like 5 minutes before I couldn't control it. I'll definitely be going back soon for a proper reshoot. I really wanna do this place justice. It's really incredible.

Amazing how far it's deteriorated in just 7 years. Dead malls are an American phenomenon. There's a whole website devoted to them (deadmalls.com/). Combination of big box stores and internet sales killed them. If you grew up during the Mall Era (approx. 1970 - 2010) it's hard to believe they could die off. But that's what's happening. The fast decay we see in this video is a tribute to the way malls were built - fast and cheap. Put up walls and a roof quickly, get the merchandise in, sell it quickly. Older municipal architecture was built to last, and to look solid for decades. Go back further and the buildings are even more durable. The Pantheon in Rome was built in 120 AD, and is still attracts visitors today, 1900 years later. But this mall looks ready to collapse after less than a decade of neglect.

Did y'all need a permit to visit or does anyone care anymore? With the quarantine going on I'd love to explore it and snap a few pics for the boys.

@@lofiurbex2511 Drone footage is still pretty good for those high-speed runs inside. The homeless dude spooked my friend at first but was fairly amicable. He kept to himself... actually I never saw or heard him again after that encounter; had the place to myself for a long while. I left around noon and swung back around a few hours later, possibly around the time you were there as it was clouding over, but the red car at 1:39 wasn't there when I had left so I aborted. Got out of town before the rain hit.
