Today we're talking a cappella, and that time when it was a hot topic in pop culture. We'll talk about shows like Glee and The Sing-Off, as well as the Pitch Perfect franchise. We'll talk about some of the reasons a cappella become so popular, some of the effect of it (and drama) and some of the groups who helped make that happen.

Lmao Cups literally had everyone in a chokehold. back in high school I would always hear sounds of cups slamming on the desk during lunch breaks 😭😭

omg I was on a month long school camp when that came out, so when I got home everyone was OBSESSED with it it was so jarring
It really WAS such a hot topic for a bit. Like, you couldn't open Instagram without getting a, "Acapella version!," of a popular song in 2014.
Pentatonix was the reason why i was introduced to the genre Acapella. Early 2010's was truly something.
My favorite Glee cover was Thriller x Heads Will Roll. Absolute genius mashup!

I loved that one in particular!
I will never forget when cups became such a big thing it was the ultimate flex to know how to do the whole thing, I randomly still do whenever I see a empathy cup. 😂

I never did but I had classmates doing it like it was their jobbbb 😭
I am just gonna let everyone know that Darren Criss’s cover of Teenage Dream threw the first brick at Stonewall. For real tho, I do credit that moment. I remember the hype, the excitement, the THIRST for Klaine.
This was such a throwback, “Cups” was truly a moment!! I was in school at the time and that specific rhythm of hands slapping against desks is burned into my memory lmao.
we cant deny the impact of glee. for a hot minute there the glee cast had the most hot 100 entries until 2020s until drake and taylor surpassed them
4:10 The Britney episode is so memorable.

saaaame had me gagged as a lil kid
Waited years for someone to notice this time in music history, LOL. I was absolutely OBSESSED with Rockapella (from the pbs game show Carmen Sandiego) as a tween in 1992 or so, while my peers were into the boy bands of the time. Then All-4-One came out and that was just ... a thing.... I wanted to join an a cappella group when I got to college but it was passe by that time! I never knew it re-trended in my adulthood. Wow.
En Vogue are the queens of acapella! My Lovin’ and Hold On are God tier
My life changed when i heard the glee cover of Dreams. I was obsessed. Still moved til this day🧎♀️➡️🧎♀️➡️🧎♀️➡️ And the rise of Pentatonix has a special place in my heart forever. What an era 🙏🏾
Glee, Pitch Perfect and Pentatonix were a core part of my adolescence so I appreciated this video lol
I remember my school's choir did an accapella cover of 'Let it Go' from Frozen and if that doesnt encapsulate 2014/2015 culture then i dont know what does
I was in undergrad during peak acapella days when Glee first came out. I definitely joined an acapella group on campus and even thought about trying out for the Glee Project 😂 it was a time for sure. Looking back it feels a bit cringe but in the moment I was having ~the best time~
I was a die-hard pentaholic from 2013-2017 in high school it was great
I wish it woulda brought back doo wop. It’s such a beautiful style of music.
I did not know the origins of Pentatonix. I always thought they were KZread natives.
1:52 I LOVED GLEE at a point in time, but as I continued to watch it, the more I began to realize, "Wow, this is kind of a messy show." Season 1 was so unhinged.
@MithunOnTheNet

Yup, it suffered from its own success. Introduced way too many new characters, many of whom just didn't fit well, never developed those characters and shifted plots so many times that it ended up being a mess!

@@MithunOnTheNet So true!! You said it well!
The only time I have heard my boyfriend's sister's voice is in a video of her doing the cup song. She was right, she's going to missed when she's gone. She passed away in 2018.
Ngl I was tempted to join my schools glee club before they disbanded after like 3 months 😂 (everyone realized they were too scared to sing, even just in that group together so it never really took off ever lmao)
It is so much fun to see someone analyzing music trends like this!!
Trust me when I tell you that Pentatonix was my everything... I was in middle school when they really popped off. This was the first band / artist I really stanned. I was watching everything about them and was anticipating every new release. Not the mention that in hindsight Avi Kaplan was my sexual awakening.
that old itunes UI, holy skeuomorphism
Good morning Naomi, I always look forward to your videos.
6:40 I was PLAYING The Warbler's Teenage Dream cover like my life depended on it.

I love Glee so much! Some songs I can never hear without thinking about the Glee version.
As someone who’s been in an acapella group for three years, I was absolutely inspired by pitch perfect. It is quite literally my favorite movie so it felt like I was living the dream joining an acapella group that I found at our equivalent of an activities fair. My group has also competed at ICCAs (we didn’t get any farther than the first round because the other local groups are just so insanely good) but it was an awesome experience!
Happy Tuesday! Glad to see another video!
love ur content! all the way from the netherlands
Wowwww I didn’t know Pentatonix was on Sing Off????!

Right? I had no idea!
literally doing a glee rewatch, perfect timing
I stopped watching glee after season 5 because after Cory died the writing definitely got even worse
Babe wake up, new Naomi Cannibal video!
I went to a performing art school for high school during the glee era when it first came out and I was so annoying that people outside our school thought we acted like this. Like yes we sometimes broke out into random songs but not full blown performance for no reason like glee lol
Omg yes I miss this!!! Raw vocals!! No autotune
I actually got a lil teary eyed at the Glee portion! It’s crazy how that show was truly apart of my life ❤😢 I would rush home to watch episodes, I’d be SEATED and ready every time! Such an amazing time man ‼️
Glee was a really good show made something like glee club dramatic and entertaining. I always think about rewatching that show but it was such a journey watching that show 🥹
I started choir in 2012 in 8th grade, and when pitch perfect came out, my choir director constantly played it in class. I also did 4 years of choir in high school, and was in my school’s acapella group for a few months. although glee and pitch perfect were popular, i hardly saw anyone jumping to join choir at my school. the ones who were into glee and pitch perfect were already in choir. sometimes during our breaks, we would do mini riff offs 😭
20:50 yeah, past Season 3 it was tough for me to stay with it.
The Troubletones were the best part about Glee. That Rumors Has It/Someone Like You mashup was a cultural reset.
Citizen Queen is a fantastic a capella group that is helping to keep the era alive in more recent years! I recommend watching their videos.
What a great day to get this video considering that Tiny Habits just dropped a new song! If you like a capella, go support them!!!
great video. i am glad this era is over tbh
Amazing title for a video. They were really throwing anything at us in high school.
definitely my personality for like 5 years lmao
21:20 THERE'S A THIRD???
Holy shit, sing off! I remember that show
I always really liked the glee cover/mashup of "Americano/Dance Again"... which I only discovered because my school's show choir did it 😂 I also enjoy the glee cover of NY State of Mind better than the original
16:40, I STILL haven't seen Pitch Perfect 2
I instantly thought of karmin

I have 2 vids on this! Ones called Hollywood Records/ Disney’s Pop Problem (something like that), and the other is called The Disappearance of Teen Idols (or something similar)
Wait theres a THIRD Pitch Perfect movie! How is this the first time ive ever heard of it 😅.
A cappella for some artists sounds better than the recorded version. I can’t help but to think of Brandy’s a cappella song from her album Human lol

I miss this era. I love the Pitch Perfect franchise and I'm still a Pentatonix stan (though the vibes have been kinda weird lately).

what you do mean “kind of weird”
@bexyPTX
Ай бұрын
@@RozWBrazel idk maybe weird wasn't the right word, it's just that they haven't put out much non-Christmas music in a while, and the vast majority of what they have done has been kinda underwhelming. I do still stan because I know they have the capacity for greatness, and the occasional song will slap, but I haven't really felt it in a while.
@RozWBrazel

@@bexyPTX oh, so you mean they've been sorta coasting? I'm glad that's all. You had me nervous.
Definitely was a big thing for a bit!
Think i also stopped watching Glee after Cory died, like I'd watch my timeline on Tumblr and be so confused with the OG characters directions. Never got into Pitch Perfect, I do remember seeing the movie posters in person and thinking I wonder if this will be successful? Didn't know it even got a third movie to be honest lol.

Yeah I don’t think I watched after season 3ish
I don’t know why but I prefer the 3rd pitch perfect movie over the 2nd one
I was in an acapella group in high school and loved Glee. I remember wondering why they got slushies in their faces. I didn't see how singing made you a loser. Glee should've ended after they graduated. I didn't like the Pitch Perfect sequels (especially the 3rd). I think I just preferred Anna Kendrick as the main lead
I look at acapella covers the same way I look at serious covers of fun songs: just another way for pretentious people to make pop music acceptable for them to listen to. Like, no thanks. I’ll listen to the original version of “My Neck, My Back” or “Toxic” or “Call your Girlfriend”.
Shouts to Myke Charles and Urban Method!! DENVER BAYBEE!!!
It’s so cheesy
Can you talk about blackish series 🤟🏾

I would love to hear her talk about Grownish. They were everywhere at one point. I recently found out they were doing their final season. I was shook! I thought the show was off in 2020.
