The 90s: The Golden Era of Motocross Gear

Спорт

Red Bull Straight Rhythm continues its mission to be a figurative time machine, transporting us back to the glorious 1990s. And ‘90s motocross wouldn’t be nearly as glorious without the wild gear that set the era apart with it’s bold styling, loud, neon graphics and cutthroat competition. Revisit this hallowed time through the collective recollections of the founders/designers of three of the top MX gear brands, Fox Racing, No Fear and AXO, as they reminisce about the vibe, the riders and the gear that fueled the ‘90s.
Longing to return to the era of two-strokes and neon pink gearsets? Red Bull Straight Rhythm has got you covered on October 5. ► • Video

    and those m2r helmets with the triple shark fin was epic too with #199 travis mid 05's, those are definately things which stays forever. I think redbull is too strict with their drivers helmet styles in any motorsport nowadays because drivers own design doesn't get attention to remember them afterwards

    I thought the shark fins were cool as fuck!!! Someone needs to bring those back for sure. I want some privateer to hit the scene in straight retro craziness for gear and bike graphics!!! Then just kill it and go pro but keep the crazy outfits like the 90s. It would definitely give him an image that would stand out, make him a unique character.

I never did care for the 4 strokes . i got my 86 trx250r in 2001 and i still race it to this day . i don't race mx anymore i race xc now and every race i go to a group of people always comes up and tells me how "COOL" i am to be racing the 2 stroke still and getting on the podium at that . lets bring back the 90s 2 strokes , wild colors , heavy metal and mullets

    It's because of the 2-Stroke, anyone could race with not too many engine modifications and a LOT of people were racing. Everyone I grew up with was riding and racing. Now days, I don't see any motorcycles anymore; tracks have all closed up, dealers are all gone, and no one could race a Friday night because it's been irreparably destroyed by the big 4 lobbying the EPA. Thanks to Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki for their ignorant push to get the 2-Stroke bikes heavily regulated be the EPA... They engineered and ensured their own downfall during the final days to switch over to case dumping 4-Strokes. Yamaha may still build the bikes, but with no competition from the others... No one's building tracks to race. Great video!

  • @Peanutdenver

    @Peanutdenver

    The cost is really killer now and that eliminates a lot of riders at and after the local level. I raced right when the switch was happening and you had to get on board if you wanted continued success. Two strokes have been making a big come back and the All Star 125 races were popular during the outdoor season, let's hope the momentum continues for a little while. The future most likely will be electric mx/sx bikes and that'll be an even bigger adjustment. Honda has already shown off their CR electric bike to the press. Tracks new and old are another issue too and you have hit the nail on the head with your comment.

  • @Peanutdenver

    @Peanutdenver

    4 жыл бұрын

    @Tom Goldenheart There are definite upsides to e-mx bikes. Tracks, noise and ease of maintenance are some of them. But the prices have to be cheaper than 4 strokes if we want our sport to grow along with more tracks because there is no noise. I'd be nice too if a bike could last you 4 or 5 seasons with just software updates rather than a new bike every or every other season. Racers and fans will miss the sound of a ICE bike and working on engines to improve performance has long been tied into the personality of racing across the board. The sound of a 2 stroke screaming is just so good.

    @Egbert Wadman bu the bikes today have no flavour to them. They are just not as fun to ride. A good example is a 89 KX 250 could ride the track all day but still have a large enough gas tank to do some long trail rides a long with dune riding. Now it's either you buy a track bike or a trail bike.

Then it definitely went to AXO in the early 90s. Then you had Thor, No Fear, Xtreme, Shift, UFO, etc. Then back to Fox, they have outlasted everyone.

    I worked at Honda during the dust up with Fox and was a key player in pushing Honda to take control of what the riders wore. At the time rider salaries were just starting to take off. Manufacturers were still spending incredible amounts relative to rider’s gear sponsors to put the whole package on the track and yet half of the exposure was going to the gear company. A lot of people don’t realize just what an inflection point that was for the industry. It came to a head when we came within a hairs width of getting Ricky Johnson to leave Fox for Hondaline. Pete Fox mentions the possibility of a lawsuit. Honda was still mired in the 3-wheeled ATC litigation nightmare and had no appetite for another fight. Roger DeCoster was and has always been a strong advocate for the rider. That’s a tough line to walk working for an OEM where the mindset is “it’s the hardware that counts” and I respect that. I think that Roger’s strong support for the riders combined with Honda’s tentativeness to get into another public brawl ended up swinging the power to the aftermarket sponsors. I remember reading the “letter to the editor” that Fox sent to Cycle News on the subject and knowing it was a battle we would never win. Well played Pete, you guys earned it. One thing not mentioned here is just how AXO became such a power in such a short period of time, and without pro rider sponsorship (initially). Besides the awesome designs, they started outfitting all the magazine test riders with free gear thereby getting themselves thousands and thousands of dollars’ worth of advertising. That combined with saturation buying of magazine advertising space literally turned the magazines into AXO catalogs. That paved the way to pro riders and AXO’s explosive growth. It was a brilliant strategy. R.I.P Jim Hale.

    Do know what, I think the demise of mx magazines is what knackered it cos when you looked through a mx mag all the mx gear was there in front of you to look at and admire, or not, then you would decide ( axo for me ) what to buy. Now the internet is different because you have to know what your looking for before and don’t seem to stumble onto individual gear like before, bring back more mx magazines ✊

    1980s set the grade for motocross, the world championships were as far as the went and a new area had to be brought to the front lines. two had to be gotten rid of because more power had to be but head games was all that the 1990s seem to have. The Xgames were truly all the 1990s had and a few good motor cycle riders. when the 2000s took stage there was a new 450 coming of age and a "Brand" that was of brand new. The 1990s was a transition some holding on to the old and some lost looking for something anything and some found it and some just held on to the coattails. Some just were fireworks hell got to make a show to make the show. But after the Championships in the late 1980s there had to be a cool down, and it was right on time. It hit the 1990s afloat enough to cause new designs for motocross and kept stars to keep thing alive for the 2000s. Hey got to thank these guys they kept it going and if we just forgot if it wasn't for who hate you wouldn't have nothing to say.

    Just bought a 01 Cr250 & put AXO stickers on the swingarm . I have had those stickers for 20years. For some reason it just felt right putting them on the Car + they look great on the side of a polished swingarm. Liked my 01 KX250 better. I miss that bike.

    Switch the back to two strokes and we could a huge reinsurance of riders and may be able to bring people back. MAKE MOTOCROSS GREAT AGAIN! We’re on the bubble I believe. We just need the extra push.

    JLOW ADV He brought professionalism to the sport. He was at the gym training and eating salads and stuff while everyone else was partying and drinking and eating whatever and the results on race day showed so everyone else had to conform to stay competitive.

    Wish they would have talked about the battle that Doug Henry had going on between Honda and Fox. (They sort of touched on it McGrath, but Doug was really involved with it at the time). In the end, everything worked out, but at the time things got real ugly.
