Then you need to go to Milan and see it in person. Last year I went to the La Spezia naval museum and was able to see a propeller from Vittorio Veneto. I was able to touch recovered parts salvaged from the submarine Scire which gave me an awesome feeling!@@AnthonyPerzia

Thank you for the excellent video. Did the anti aircraft armament on Italian vessels change during the war? In the British navy there was a trend to add Oerlikons and sometimes remove some surface to surface weapons to add more anti aircraft weapons. Did the same trend happen in the Italian navy?

Yes it happened, essentially by increasing the number of 37 and 20mm guns, on destroyers and battleships for sure, I don't recall exactly if the same happened for the cruisers but I believe not

@@Italian_Military_Archives Thank you for getting back to me on this. The only additions I am aware of on the cruisers were the replacement of the 13.2mm double mounts with single 20mm mounts. I believe this happened on Bolzano and Cadorna at least. I also recall that on some light cruisers the torpedo tubes and aircraft were removed during the war and I wonder whether this was to make space to improve anti aircraft defences, but I don't have any details about what was put in the space created.

Last year I got LE NAVI DA GUERRA ITALIANE 1940-1945 By Ermino Bagnasco ~ Enrico Cernuschi (Italian Warships of WWII) No problem with it being in Italian. I just use translate and read it with the phone. Excellent book .

do you think the Regia Marina should have improved the older 100mm AA gun, in order to fasten the elevation mechanism, so it could be a real threat to modern faster WW2 aircrafts (FCS aside)? In my opinion developing the 90mm was more expensive, the round was lighter, and the combat effectiveness proved to be sub par if not plain worse. I would love to hear your opinion

I cannot say if the old 100/47 could have been modernized. I do not exclude that "lowering the calibre" was due to technological limits or other factor affecting the industry. I think the gun was overall a decent weapon, the ammunition perhpas could have been improved

Hi, Any recommendations for the books (can be in Italian) that cover Italian naval weapons? I already own Naval weapons of WW2 that you used as a source here, but it's such a mixed-bag, particularly lacking when you'd like to dive into the specific shells or fuses used.

The book from Bagnasco and De Toro on the Littorio has been traslated into english. Actually Seaforth publishing has translated very good titles about the Regia Marina. There was an old italian book on the naval weapons of the regia marina, but it's hard to find (Le armi delle navi italiane, E. BAGNASCO)

@@Italian_Military_Archives You mean the 2011 "The Littorio Class: Italy's Last and Largest Battleships 1937-1948"? I own an e-book, but the "Le navi da battaglia classe 'Littorio' 1937-1948" was published in 2020 - is it really the same book? Or the Italian edition is updated? "Le armi delle navi italiane" seems to be exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for, cheers. If anything else comes to your mind - feel free to throw it my way. I own a bunch of books from Seaforth (e.g. Italian Battleships, Italian Heavy Cruisers), but they're much more focused on British (obviously) and German navies than anything else. It's honestly disappointing just how much detail there is on German or Japanese navies, down to some of the smallest details, while for the Italian (or French for that matter) navy it's so lackluster once you go into details like specifics of the munition, boilers, armor, etc. etc.. Tiny pieces of information spread around countless books. It's ridiculous, to the point where I have more detailed descriptions of the Minizini than the Italian OTO 100mm/47 in my library.

I can point you at the latest Osprey publication on the italian battlefleet 1940-1943 by Enrico Cernuschi. This is a good starting point. Then there's Vincent O'Hara with "the struggle for the Middle sea"
