• How To Punch HARD like...
1. So to start with the first punch and the most important punch in boxing, the JAB the straight left hand. If you are southpaw, you’re a straight right hand. This is used to find a range in a fight and set up the big right hand or whatever punch you’re going to throw after that. There are a few ways of throwing the jab, and we’ll take you through them. The first jab is the speed jab where we’re not stepping with it, or it’s going to be a speed jab. This jab here is excellent for finding the range but as well as frustrating your opponent. If you’ve been in with a fighter who has got a great jab and they keep pinging you; it might not be hard but frustrates your opponent. So the next variation of it is stepping with the jab, it is also how you get power on the punch. If you step with the jab, you can see the energy there. It’s vital that I do this and I land on my toe. So I’m not stepping, land on my heel, I fall on my toe. Again, that’s the power jab.
2. The next punch is the power shot, the #2, the straight right hand. If you are a Southpaw, you’re a left hand, and I’m going to show you how to throw this shot. When you’re performing this punch, you’ve got to turn your hips and transfer your weight your front foot. This is why and how you get power in the blow. It involves moving your weight and turning your hips. When I say transfer your weight, I’m not shifting my weight like this; I’m keeping my head back while turning my hips.
3. The third punch is called THE HOOK. It’s probably one of the most awkward punches to throw. How am I going to throw that? It’s good to throw it off the straight hand. Because that puts you in the perfect position to throw that hook with the weight transfer. If I throw a straight right hand, transferring the weight in my front foot, my back heel is off the ground there, and all I’m going to do is drop the back heel. Afterwards, I’ll be the front heel off the ground and transfer the weight back. The weight transfer gets the power in the punch.
The other most important punches in boxing include;
4. THE REAR HOOK
5. THE LEFT HOOK
6. THE RIGHT HOOK
7. THE JAB BODY
8. THE CROSSBODY
9. THE REAR UPPERCUT

    Great instruction and inspiration. I use to throw that “uppercut” to the body (I called it a “shovel hook”), after a straight punch and it would land almost every time (inexperienced fighters never expect it). I had my “floating ribs” cracked by a body hook, and I don’t think they ever heal 100%. Most beginners are “head hunter’s” but the “body shots are like money in the bank” (Larry Holmes).

    Another superb instructional video, Tony. Your videos are the best I've seen in the Martial Arts world. Great to hear a northern English accent too. I'm an Aussie! Love your excellent technique in the punches too. When I was taught the Right Cross, I was instructed to slide my rear right foot a little forwards to gain extra distance. Was the Overhand Right in there? I've always adopted this foot slide practice for the two back foot punches. Interesting how you use a Right Hook off the back foot too. I'll start practising it.

    From a teaching perspective, it is great how you demonstrate the left hook from both sides of the bag, Tony. It creates clarity. As someone else has mentioned, you have a modicum of technical demonstration in mid air, closely followed by how the technique or combination applies on the bag.

    Another amazing video Tony... I understand boxing and some basic combos. I know the lead hand can be used for a hook then body hook. Or a snap jab and a hook to either head or body. My question.. would you recommend or is it ever smart to link two or three strikes with the rear hand. Not so much combos, For instance Floyd the way he can throw cross to the body then the head. I'm guessing the lead hand should be used more than the rear "The sniper"

    Another great tutorial Tony. I was British & World Kickboxing Champion and I think you are a great coach, as well as a great boxer.
