Oh mannnn. You’re covering all the same ground I did. Previous owner had tightened down on the governor ears without getting the gear lined up and broke the housing. I turned a new housing on my lathe complete with the threaded connection for the tach drive. Good luck.

On mine the arms are flopping around and the spring has no tension on it at all.

I am not sure if you have one or not but the I&T shop manual for the 9N-2N-8N series goes into good detail on the steering it’s worth getting a copy I don’t know if you can get it online or not I borrowed one and photo copied it and I made 2 copies one for the garage that can get greasy and oily and then I have another copy in the house so I can study it if something has me confused! I will be watching your governor video for sure because I can’t seem to figure it out out on 3 of my 4 8N’s and new ones are crazy money. Keep that old iron running 😀🇨🇦

I do have the shop manual and that is a great idea to photo copy it. Mine already has a few greasy fingerprints.

Grease the heck out of it put it back with 0 tolerance it's steering box not motor it isn't gonna get hot change tolerance is on you just tighten it down Snug

I tried to set it by the book but ended up going tighter to get rid of the slop. It's working good now but wish I had just went with grease. I've still got a very small gear oil leak.
