    This kind of videos are the worst demonstration of what jazz really is, and these are one of the reasons why people nowadays believe that you can't enjoy it. Jazz isn't just a demonstration of music theory and adding some random extensions in a chord progression. let me tell you, this is far from being considered a jazz rearrangement of little wing. this was just a bunch of random chord voicings put together.

    Jazzing up Little Wing: change up the rhythm accents a little bit so it swings more, like Up From The Skies. Throw in some some octaves and double stops into the single note soloing. Play the melody in octaves, all the way through. Simple, but enough harmonic texture to add some jazz flavor to the song. And use your EAR. This song has a MELODY.

  • @dcreade4793

    @dcreade4793

    Afraid so. Level 8 forgets the blues. So does the shreddy part at the end of level 7. Chromaticism is fine, but needs to be used sparingly, for a purpose. Speed is no substitute for telling the story. I like the triad approach of earlier levels, though. Good structure to build off of. @@milkwater1204

    @@dcreade4793 At 14:58 it was straight Spazz Fusion, and the Chromaticism you mentioned, were seizure inducing. 😄 As you said, I think the song gets lost, at least as a guitar piece, without some blues in there. Jimi really didn’t ever do long solos for Little Wing. I’ve heard a few bootlegs of shows, where he solos a bit longer, but nothing close to other songs. It was usually close to the album, like when he played The Wind Cries Mary. There are studio outtakes, where one can hear some of the places SRV took it, based on his ideas, for making it a showstopper guitar instrumental.

  • @CKidder80

    @CKidder80

    I agree. It brings up something I've felt a lot - that sometimes musicians crap the bed while trying to be "technical." Sometimes getting too slick for your own good KILLS the actual musicality of the thing. Yeah, it might be more technical, it might be more creative from a theory aspect. But, if the sound of it sucks you've blown it. And, level 8 of this video was just total sewage. It just plain wasn't musical anymore.

    @Bickley Jonas I mean more as Electric Guitar. Acoustic and classical guitar are forms of guitar that can already standalone. Electric Guitar is something more considered for Rock as rhythm or lead work, not as something you play by yourself mostly. Of course that's not the case anymore because of tunes like Little Wing.

    One of the most informative lessons I’ve seen specifically around level 6 & 7 and targeting the “sweet notes” in the given chords. I’ve been working on triads and am working on incorporating it into solos. Over time my hope is that it will happen more organically and I can just follow my ear. Until then I’m in the weeds thinking triads.

    Wanted to thank you so much for this video. Love that song, have always steered clear of it, because quite frankly I just don’t really have the chops. Since I watched your video, I need all the room with the cord progression for a week or so. And then I actually decided to take the little wing lesson. Doing much better with it than I thought I would be able to. Thank you again, you really help me out🙏

    I've got questions on levels 7 and 8. On level 7: Are we allowed to mix the pentatonic scale shapes in almost one position (the root changes of course) in order to play a solo and try not to sound like that we are changing them with following the patterns you showed? And on level 8: Do you mean that we can sound a little bit avant garde (free) if we still follow some of the rules?

    Great explanation and modeling of music theory which as a guitar composer I personally really love so nice instruction by starting with bass notes to establish the key. Such great tone on the melody when in a high octave and I love the tips of adding in 9th chords, diminished, and inversions which sound pretty and make a very unique sound. Very inspiring and nicely encouraging to apply such Jazz elements. Cheers!

    I have constructive criticism for you Tyler. First off, great video, and I’ve actually subscribed to guitar super system. My advice is to redo the jazz analysis of Little Wing, redoing level 8. The heart of jazz, like all music is tension and resolution, not the most complicated chords possible. It just so happens that jazz will often use more dissonant chords than other genres do to achieve that balance of tension and resolution. Your rendition to me was all tension. If you spend time composing something with tighter lines and smoother transitions, I think you could write something very beautiful. Especially for someone of your skill level. I doubt you’ll see this. But I also wanted to state it as a defense against the people hating on jazz in this comment section, using your level 8 example as support.

    Just watched three levels of little wing, but eight levels knocked me outa my chair... Lol... Still working Tim's lesson on little wing. Very in depth. I think the cord progression is the most fun to play over for allots of us. I never learnt the cords until just a couple few months ago. Just kinda faked it until it was my turn to solo. So I had a word with myself and now I still struggle with that part of it. But I did finally sit down a learn the progression. Gave myself an atta boy too... Thanks for your moments of crazy!
