Pausing at 4:16 it would be glorious if you could do a serie of videos on turtoring actually, like basics, refreshing knowledge for yourself beforehand, learning and trying to implement modern teaching theories for turtoring, how to discover and deal with knowledge gaps, preparing for homework, home studies and presentations, proofs, and whatever is needed in the schoolyear, getting ready for finals, maybe even some math for work refreshment sessions or something. Just a few ideas that i would consider interesting from your perspective and experience. Lecturing is an interesting point you bring up, here in slovenia it is customary for phd candidates to get employed by the unis to cover assistant share of teaching and grading and the rest of work. Thanks for the video, i liked it :D

I appreciate your advice so much! I'm more than halfway through my PhD and I'm not happy about my performance thus far but I decided to take a step back and a deep breath and just do baby steps. Money became an issue recently and I've been distracting myself with trying to get income. I'm glad you made this video!

User testing was so weird. I did it for a year or so and it seemed to always want me to be a CEO or other executive. It was also strange that I had to BE planning a wedding let’s say as opposed to drawing on my experience from planning my wedding. It’s all about the hidden advertising. I ended up taking up tutoring and it has been a solid stream of part-time income

In India, the we have an exam called- NET/JRF . If we qualify for jrf, the government provides fellowship to students every month who enroll in Ph.D. and i also have qualified for that too😀😀

Congratulations on qualifying! I come from India as well. He's trying to say passive income besides regular stipend or funding. I personally demonstrate labs at the university of Birmingham. Personally, what I feel is this sort experience really Good and also it's more like a brush up knowledge or can be useful in learning new techniques which were not taught during our study period.

I wonder if I should accept this PhD offer since my only stipend will be through working for 2 positions as a TA for 2 semesters aside from my full time PhD and one semester as a RA with my professor. I feel working for 3 jobs is too much. What is your advice?

I was offered a 23k scholarship for a 55k doctorate. Buy I deferred the offer until getting a full Fulbright scholarship. Do you think I did the best choice? It would have been feasible to get the lacking money in an ultra expensive and competitive city as NYC for a 1st year doctoral student? Magnificent video by the way. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia

I'm pursuing my PhD in Taiwan. and work part-time as a science teacher at an international elementary school. I am totally self-reliant, with no other assistance. I'm still confused about my decision to work as an ele school teacher. I occasionally wished I hadn't quit my part-time RA work at the famous national research institute, AS, TW. I felt exploited since I worked for hours but was paid very little. When I saw my other classmates doing well by teaching English at cram school. I was so dissatisfied with myself for breaking my head for the RA while getting three times less than them. So I resigned and took a job that was completely unrelated to my passion in order to survive. Despite the fact that I am now earning 22 hours per month as a teacher, which is equivalent to 80 hours per month, I feel I am degrading my professional values. So I'm wondering if I'm on the correct track.

Just a curious question guys! Is this also applicable to schools in the USA? Can a PHD student do other work while on the school full funding program???

Another golden video. You covered exam marking in the latter part of the PhD period, are there also opportunties for those of us in the humanities and behavioral sciences to mark undergraduate essays in one's discipline area?

  • @DrAndyStapleton

Yes, you should be able to find lecturers who want to offload their undergraduate marking. Approach academics in your department to see if they are interested in outsourcing.Even if it is a no right now they will have you in the back of their minds for the future.

I was able to earn my PhD (Law) - doing this part-time, albeit completing it in 3.5 years; while working full time. I was even able to complete a Masters in Bioethics while completing my PhD.

This is an invaluable Vlog Dr Andy, I’m in the last 6 months of my write up stage of my PhD and the biggest struggle has been juggling full time work and writing up my thesis, but the hustling actually helps you live and in my case pay fees etc in the UK. I lecture part time at the Sorbonne University in Abu Dhabi now and it also makes you feel like an academic to be doing side hustles in a uni. Thanks for your uploads.

I will be starting my PhD. soon. This is invaluable advice for me. Do you have an idea how do I monetise this skill of mine?

Really useful and practical advice, as always, Andy! My twopenneth for people not on scolarships! I wouldn't say this is a recommendation, but just to let people know, it is possible! I funded my life and my studies myself by doing a full time job that was nothing to do with my studies. I paid my fees out of my wages and did my 2 B.A.s and 4 M.A.s all in totally different subjects, at evening classes. One was even in science - no lab, so all field work! Except to attend lectures, I had no interaction with the Universities at all. I discovered it wasn't really possible to do a PhD whilst working full time (I had a 6 hours a day commute to and from work to factor in, too). So I have waited until I am retired. The luxury of having plenty of time to study is such a joy. I am still distance learning but now we have the internet to use to find information it makes so much difference to having to rush into bookshops in my lunch hour and buy books I thought night be useful. I think my comment is, don't let finance get in the way of learning. The mindset is to be a student with a job, not a worker doing classes! Now, I'm not a retired pensioner, I'm a full time student! Good luck everyone and thanks so much Andy. Your videos really really help.
