The Nikon Nikkor Z 58mm f/0.95 S NOCT is the most expensive lens Nikon sells. Is it a marketing gimmick or the real deal?
Nikon did not send this to me - in fact, I didn't even ask. I rented this lens for a few weeks and shot a variety of subject matter - some studio work, still life, even street photography. This lens is absolutely fantastic if you like the look of extreme shallow depth of field. My favorite use for this lens is street photography at night with subjects between 10-20 feet from the camera. Its absolutely stunning. This lens is very different than both the Zeiss Otus series of lenses and the famous Leica Noctilux 50mm f/0.95. Its designed to look incredible wide open, it has a close focusing distance of about 18 inches, its big, its heavy, there is no autofocus and its obscenely priced.

I did see someone else talking about the Noct as a Cine lens - the look it creates makes it almost perfect and the long focus throw and manual focus seems to support that. As a Cine lens, 8k is pretty cheap. As for availability, it seems to be a bit depending on where you are. My local nikon pusher still has a couple of them in stock.

  • @greenmedic88

    @greenmedic88

    4 жыл бұрын

It has many characteristics that are favorable for cine lenses (relatively "cheap" as a cine lens with high IQ). The key drawback is it wasn't designed as a part of a comprehensive cine lens system in which the full range of focal lengths have the same gear ratio for the aperture ring (marked in T stops) and the focus rings across all lenses, in addition to having the same distance between said rings for use with external focusing systems. It's just a single lens. But, if a filmmaker wanted to shoot at 58mm and demanded the best optical quality relative to price, the obscenely expensive for stills photo $8k Noct, would become an economical solution for video. Either way, this lens produces a signature look that very easy to become partial to. Just at $8,000.

Lots of very good points Ted. Of course the images are amazing wide open. The way the subject separates from the background is such a cool look. I think my biggest complaint with all theses specialty lenses, besides the outrageous prices, is the lack of autofocus. Like you said, you miss so many shots when you have to focus manually, the Noct is just not that suitable for street photography. I use the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art with the Nikon D850 and Z6, and I couldn't do w/o the autofocus. I'm sure the pics are not as unique as the Noct, but certainly good enough. For the money, I would go with the latest Leica Noctilux f/0.95. Having been a Nikon shooter for decades, I have more than my fair share of time with both film and digital Nikons and ownership a myriad of lenses (including the 58m f/1.2 Noct-Nikkor and others, that are even more expensive than this latest offering (like the 13mm f/5.6 AIS) The chief difference I have discovered by going to Leica (S, and the Leica MP) is that the majority of Leica/Leitz lenses have been designed specifically for outstanding sharpness wide open. With Nikkor, I have routinely had to stop down 2-3 stops to reach their best sharpness. Leica definitely has worked to ensure that their glass is actually useable wide open (and yes, I have the 50mm f/1.0 Noctilux among other M and R lenses). Their latest SL lenses are very similar to the latest Nikon Z optical offerings, and equally pricy. The DOF between this Z lens at f/0.95 and say the much older Noct-Nikkor at f/1.2 or even the Noctilux 50mm f/1.0 is so close that I can't see anything that amounts to $8,000. Thanks for the review. It's clearly a very special lens, and shows that Nikon is capable of incredible design and manufacturing today. It looks like a monster to carry!

Well done Nikon! Every manufacturer needs to produce flagship products simply to show what they are able to achieve. Nikon did this with their super wide angles in the 60's and 70's and made the single figure F series the premier film SLR. I appreciate that the lens is high cost and low production numbers but that is part of the game. When those early superwides come up for sale (Often at Grays of Westminster) check the prices - perhaps the Noct may not be a bad investment?

I am very impressed with the spectacular images you took. There are a lot of good examples of different situations and light. It would certainly be a top lens to get to be creative due to the bokeh and the aperture. When I take a photo, a few things., 1. the subject is telling me a story. 2. There is a story to tell that is unfolding in front of me, so how do I record that so people understand what I’m trying to show them? 3. Would this be better in black and white ( mood, emotion and expression are best in b&w). 4. A lot of the times a shallow depth of field assists in isolating the subject or helps tell you the story. This lens will definitely do that. I like the comment it would be a lens you’d rent or if the price was between 4,000-6,000 you would consider it. From what you’ve said, and another KZread channel, it is one of the best lenses Nikon has ever produced. This channel is the Art of Photography. You are the only channel that discusses lenses and equipment as an artistic creative tool. As always... great insight

Coming back to this, I just got back from vacation and I did a lot of daytime shooting with an f/1.2 lens (mainly at f/2) using a 2 stop ND filter. So...yeah, at f/0.95 you'd definitely need 5 or 6 stops of ND filter.

I know that some time Nikon make lenses that can take a long time to get out , but some times it's just worth the wait. I have both the 500mm PF and that was one order long time but the 19mm PC-e lens only took a week or so. But what is good is that I am see for people like your self who have actually used this lens that it give you a good image. As far as price goes well it dose normally cost a lost more to get to the next level.

Thank you for posting this and sharing your experiences with the NOCT. Really intrigued to hear that you need 3 to 6 stops of ND filter to shoot in daylight wide open, even though the Z6 and Z7 go up to 1/8000 shutter speed.

That ultra extreme purple fringing example just tells me the lens has effectively no purple fringing. If you look at images from the Nikkor 50mm 1.2 AIS or 1.4G, you will clearly see purple fringing on high contrast subjects in ordinary photography. If you have to use an ND filter, shoot straight into the sun at max aperture, and zoom into 100% to see it, I think it's fair to say Nikon corrected for it :) To be fair, if you don't need the f/0.95, the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.8. S has almost as good correction for purple fringing, minus the special look, swirly bokeh, and vignetting, at less than a tenth of the price. You don't get the cool suitcase though ;)

The Nikon 50 1.2 will be here soon. I do agree the cost of the noct is ludicrous but perhaps that’s mainly due to manufacturing and supply and demand because they’re struggling to supply even at the current price. I think this lens will have a particular audience and it’s certainly not for everyone, as you say a 50mm 1.2 would be more than enough for a majority. I’m really amazed with what you managed to take for street photography because I wouldn’t have thought this possible, well done and thank you for your thoughts 👍😀

Gorgeous rendering, showcases the advantages of the short flange back distance and wide lens mount touted by Nikon marketing, but priced strictly for rental houses and collectors with deep pockets. Love the images capable with the lens; just won't ever own one. Not a case of angry envy, which is the source of virtually all criticism of this lens. It's just an extreme luxury item that would rarely be taken out of the case for specific shots.

On micro lenses sensors, large aperture lenses are causing problems because the coma rays (rays passing to the pupil side) are coming with a high angle. An angle that exceed the pixel angle of acceptance or at least the efficiency drop for these rays. To cover this manufacturer usually increase the gain silently (without changing anything in the exit, neither the iso) to make you thing you really got the extra light. I really wonder if this is still the case with these last BSI sensors. I need one to test ! Great vid. Great photos.

7:43 "Times Square was way too bright to be shooting in; I did use a 3-stop ND filter." And at 8:20 you even suggest using a 6-stop ND filter. Why exactly? I think you could use f/0.95 with 1/200s to 1/8000s at base ISO without really changing the look (i.e. "freezing the movement") of those evening/overcast shots. Or is the ND filter for photos with flash or videos that you do not share in the video when you talk about the ND filters?

@Arthur Nazarian exactly what I was thinking, the times square photos look like they were taken at dusk, yes the artificial lights were bright but still a little confused why you would need ND filters for the un-motion blurred dusk/night shots we saw in the video? (like you said there's 1/8000th to use if you need it!)...........all that said the photo's in this video from that lens look incredible!!!!!!!

Agree on the price. Wish I had the money to get one of those. I believe they are coming out with the 50 1.2 S this year so more akin to the canon approach. The noct seems to be more of a "we can do the best" approach.

I have the 135/2 Defocus AF-D lens and you will find that the shooting experience at F2 is a similar . Of course it's a different animal, it's for D SLR's or film cameras and it's a longer focal length, but while they still make it it's a hell of a lot cheaper and it's AF too . I like it for Portraits which it was designed for but it's also kind of nice for shooting on the street.

I've seen so many commentators bashing the long focus throw on the Noct. That's not a drawback, it's a benefit! Yes, you can't go from close focus to infinity with the flick of a wrist, but the whole point of the Noct is *precise* focus, not *fast* focus. One of my favorite Nikon F-mount lenses is the pre-AI 55mm f/1.2, and I prefer it over the newer AI model for exactly this reason. The newer style bodies that came out with AI have a much shorter focus throw making precise focusing noticeably trickier.

These shallow DOF shots in daylight street photography reminds me of shooting with a medium format camera. With a manual focus lense it is really not easy to get something in focus on moving subjects.

Question - my understanding is that legacy manual lenses can be accurately focused for a given/known distance (for applications like pulling focus for video) but Z lenses can’t be predictably focused because they are “electronically” focused (not manual) so you rely on Autofocus... you cannot predictable focus a Z lens... manually. Correct? Trying to figure if I need to buy the Z 50mm vs the legacy 50mm 1.8 strictly for video shooting on the Rhino Arc II/Focus setting two focal key frames... is it worth spending $300 more for the Z if I’m never going to use it for anything but... the above?

I think this lens was designed to show potential of Z mount. They also knew that this lens is not going to be sold alot but they wanted to show how future proof Z cameras are and also that id it wasn't for the limitations F mount limitations, they can outperform not just Canon but Zeiss as well.

Ted, I agree with you that the price appears to be very high; however, I am amused when people talk about the retail price of this lens, there is NEVER any reference to what the actual cost is by Nikon to produce the lens. At least I have NEVER come across any information relating to Nikon's cost to produce the lens and if we don't know the production cost can anyone really say that the lens is overpriced? Clearly, this is a highly specialized lens for a lot of the reasons you identified and I agree $8,000.00 is a lot of money to pay for one lens, but I don't know I can criticize the retail price. I really liked your review and the image samples you obtained.

Perhaps not my best lens but possibly my favorite art lens; if you want a client to go wow upon viewing their photographs it will elicit that reaction if used properly. That said would love to see a side by side review of both, an obvious comparison no one on KZread has taken on. Just a thought. Ciao.

Hi, I really enjoy your reviews -- so professional, thorough, knowledgable. You really know your stuff. This video was no exception. Would you consider devoting a video to Canon's legendary 50mm f1.0? Canon ceased production around 1989-1990, but the lense can still be attained (second-hand, of course) for anywhere from $5000 to $7,000. I am almost willing to bet that though it has been around for more than 20 years, it might very well produce images on a par with this Noct 0.95; I would really love to hear what you have to say about Canon's 50mm f1.0, which some call the "Boquet Beast."
