"Baba Lasagna, don't get any on ya"
One of my favorite episodes so far. I love unique commamders.
One of my faborite unique commanders of all time is Chisei, Heart of the Ocean. The mechanic of ticking counters off of things so you can repeatedly abuse saga effects, have a permanently 1-cost Mystic Remora, like theres a LOT of fun to be had with the commander. Not the most powerful, but DEFINATELY unique
I was super excited when I first saw Timin and Rhoda just because I thought the art was cool but after building them they have continued to surprise me with how effective they can be as commanders. Rhoda gets really big really fast, if she never dies the game is going to end very quickly. Timin does such a good job of supporting her that the only other tap effects that you really need are the tap everything cards, of which there are like 12. One card I really like with them that I think is super underplayed is Of One Mind, which is a 3 mana draw 2 that costs 1 mana if you control a Human and a Non Human, which is easily fulfilled by the commanders. My current version of this deck mostly relies on Timin and Rhoda to handle most of the offensive pressure with the help of the tap everything spells, then dedicates like 20 card slots to making sure that Rhoda doesnt die and lose all her counters. The biggest weakness with these guys is that they're kind of expensive, especially if they both die to a boardwipe.

They've been my main deck for a year now and I still have to explain to people that they are actually good. They do a good job tying together a bunch of similar but useless cards we all have sitting in our scraps. My current favorite card is Rhystic Deluge - you'd think people would pay the tax, but they don't.

good card for Timin and Rhoda is Tempest Caller 2UU 2/3 Merfolk Wizard from ixilan. ETB Tap all creatures target opponent controls.

@@munsulight721 Yeah, that would be my warning for anyone wanting to play them...if your playgroup is a lot of Voltron, they're basically out of the game as long as Timin's on the board.
I have an Obeka deck, and what I will say: it's a pain to keep up to date. The "at the end of turn" effects are kinda rare but when they appear it's a gamble if they'll completely break the deck or are completely useless. But it's a tonne of fun
@RatedManatee

I understand this pain. It is the deck I have multiple pages in my binder for cards that go in and out of the deck.
YES finally some respect for Glissa the Traitor in casual. Its been the deck I can’t ever get tired of or take apart, many years of fun
I love baba it’s such a fascinating design space. I love Liquid Metal torque in that deck and ran it with a lot of enchantment creatures. Super fun and way more to think about than an average sac deck

Im considering building a baba deck, seems so nice. What are some win cons for the deck that you think fit her strategy?
@Darksun45230
Жыл бұрын
@@diegoperezsommariva2509 I use Joey from EDHRecast's Baba Lysaga deck and most of the time, I'm grinding out value with her. I've won multiple times with Blossoming Bogbeast, Rancor + Ashaya, and backswinging after using Arachnogenesis to fog a Shorikai Go-Wide Vehicles deck. Sometimes, you just drain opponents out of nowhere.
A card I think is missing from this list is Yurlok of Scorch Thrash. How can you get more unique than adding mana burn back into the game?
Love this episode, dives deep into some niche commanders. If you ever make a part 2 would love to see you cover Phage the Untouchable and/or Selenia the Dark Angel. I feel both are pretty unique (especially Phage) and would love to see ya delve deep into some of the jank cards that you would mostly only see in their respective decks.
Weirdest Finisher for Hinata: DOVESCAPE! With your opponents creating 1/1 flyers instead of casting spells, they're just producing more targets for your "x Targets" spells, so you end up casting those for 50+ CMC, and creating 50+ Birds! It becomes a Bird Race where you can be the only winner.
One of my favorite videos you've ever done! These are totally my type of decks. I've actually messed around with 4 of the 7 on moxfield already, and I'm tempted to try the other three. The most unique deck I have actually built, and one that definitely fits on this list, is Mairsil the Pretender. So many cards that are normally jank become superstars in that deck. Aetherling? Eater of the Dead? Mischievous Poltergeist? Pendant of Prosperity? Coveted Jewel? Hateflayer? Arcanis the Omnipotent? I literally have dozens of cards in that deck that I never consider anywhere else. Another super fun card in Glissa is biotransference.
Iname As One is absolutely one of the wildest commanders you could build around. 12 mana golgari without a built in cost reducers like Ghalta or Thrasta
@hamblance5938

Unfortunately you don’t ever get the ETB casting from the command zone since it requires casting from your hand 😭
@diegoperezsommariva2509
Жыл бұрын
@@hamblance5938 you can get around that with cards like command beacon and such. But yeah, not much support for that.
I will say that Glissa has one deck similar to her with the original Toshiro Umezawa (I think that's correct). He gives instants in your graveyard flashback whenever an opponent's creature dies instead of letting you cast artifacts. That being said, he is monoblack but still a very unique deck
My Obeka deck is my pride and joy. Its one of those decks you can make as nasty or group-centered as you want and its always fun to play with. I've had to stop playing it here and there to focus on other avenues of deckbuilding. But i always come back before long❤
I just made a Yedora deck and it's so broken but also so fun and opponents are always like wtf does this deck do until they get blown out by a blasting station or run over by scutes. Such a unique card and I like that you can be super combo based or go for landfall or animate the lands and run over people with your forests.
Yedora is combo piece in my kadena deck. Crazy with primordial mist. Such a cool card! More vids like this plz! I love your unique deck idea vids. It’s what got me super into your channel :)
The most unique commander I've built is probably Grenzo, Dungeon Warden. All of a sudden cards that put cards on the bottom of your library, like Junktroller and Reito Sentinel, become powerhouses when they would be unplayable in every other deck and format in Magics history :)
Building Hinata, already playing Obeka. You hit the nail on the head with so many of its unique cards. For extra turns don't forget warrior's oath, personally don't like Gambit cause it's impossible to recur since exiles itself. Also there are a couple more counterspells/creatures with stifle options, it's so much fun to play them, I have them for defensive, own triggers, purposes but end up using them a lot against opponents abilities and it's so rare otherwise.
This is an awesome video idea, and now I really want to build Glissa
you guys gotta do this topic again, great episode
34:00 So funny that you edit right after this, LOL!
Very interesting discussons around Hinata. And such a crazy interaction with Volcanic offering. All in all seems like a really cool commander.

The effect is unique, but 2 mana sublime epiphany, 2 mana curse of the swine to turn all the opponents creatures into 2/2 tokens etc is just stupidly good. The stax effect is also really annoying. Not a fun commander to play against IMO, but very powerful.
@hermodnitter3902

@@TheMattmatic yup perhaps not the most fun to play against. I got so many other ideas so will skip Hinata myself. But the discussion was still interesting to follow if you had never thought about this commander before.
@TheMattmatic
Жыл бұрын
@@hermodnitter3902 Definitely. And like many other commanders, there are many ways to build Hinata. I'm just a bit biased since one of the players in our playgroup has terrorized us with his Hinata, and even when he's tried to power it down, it's still been incredibly strong!
I've had a Glissa deck since she was first printed. She has been my favorite commander since then for these exact reasons you mentioned and more. My deck has slowly over the years evolved into drawing or tutoring up Mycosynth Lattice + Darksteel Forge + Nevinyrral's Disk combo to win. Otherwise equipping Glissa with some swords or living weapons for commander damage usually does the trick. Oh no! Block my Glissa? That's fine, I get an artifact back and she usually won't die because she has first strike and deathtouch. Win Win. She'll always be my favorite and what I'm most proud of making unique.
YOU GHUYS ARE GREAT!!!! I love the humor and chemistry in your vids!
I love my Obeka deck but she quickly became a kill-on-sight target. Commander-centric gameplans make for easy targets. My favorite thing about the deck is actually the alt win condition with Hive Mind and the Extra Turn cards. Hive Mind dupes the effect onto all other players, and the stack means that everyone else takes their extra turn (which they lose at the end of) before me. It's definitely not a go-to win-con, but it was a fun "Wait...did you just win?" moment the first time it (accidentally) happened.
One of ur best videos, such a great idea to discuss.
This is the most brilliant video! I am new to magic. Are there moxfield deck lists for any of these commanders?
Videos like this one make me excited to do some deckbuilding! I was expecting to see Horobi, Death's Wail in the video though - talk about a commander that makes the most obscure and useless cards must-includes!
33:00 I actually use Illithid Harvester in my Thassa Historic Brawl deck on Arena. I run Tale's End and technically Thassa's Intervention as the only counterspells (fuck Wash Away, not fun), and bounce effects is the only removal, which is temporary. The Illitihid takes care of the opponent's commander in an interesting way, which they usually have to kill it themselves to play it again. Works especially well with Thassa because your commander can blink and tap down opponent's creatures.
I really love building unique decks. My first deck that had a really unique commander was Marsil, the Pretender, which is absolutely an unusual design, but it's also, ultimately, just a big combo deck, and I got board of how repetitive Marsil played. I've built a lot of others over the years, for instance, I'm now building General Marhault Elsdragon, and it's been fun to find every card that has rampage and pair it up with as many lure effects as possible. Gruul going big for combat isn't new, but wanting to be blocked as much as possible is definitely a new angle to play with.
This is such a great video idea!
Mishra, Eminent One's Warform copies allows for some unique comboes and interactions not possible (or very difficult) otherwise. Worth an honorable mention.
OHHH! I never realized that Baba Lysaga doesn't check that the 3 permanents are different card types, It checks that three or more card types are among the things you sacrificed! This is a game changer!
Videos like this are peak Nerds
Myra the magnificent is actually the most unique commander ever made. You literally open a theme park in the middle of the table.
Perry the Pulverizer (Bant Rhino from Capenna) might not be the strongest, but he's unique for sure!
I agree with that list all the way through :D Some that could have been mentionned Greasefang is kinda unique as a vehicle reanimator deck Magar of the Magic Strings is unique. It is a Rakdos Big Spells commander with the "graveyard twist" My man the Mimeoplasm play so many weird cards Beamtown Bullies or Jon Irenicus play so many "bad gifts" card. They are both unique in their own way
Jhoira of the Ghitu has a really interesting play style. You suspend huge spells and then remove the time counters early and suddenly theres eldrazi titans on turn 5.
I love Soulfire Eruption in my Galazeth. Mana is not an issue in this deck with all the red cards that for example draw and create treasure or things that create artifacts on instant/sorcery casting. And as soon as this deck hits around 20 mana per turn, I just start digging for a finisher. Soulfire Eruption is a nice option there as it can go rather deep and on its way maybe remove some pesky small stuff. And then there are the board wipes that deal damage based on an exiled instant or sorcerey from the graveyard (even when I just discard Eruption to a red draw spell), buying me even more time to find the card I need as we usually play very light on tutors and multiple turns.
I used tcgplayer yesterday :) I also made Rhoda and Timin as a $10 budget deck a while ago.
Glissa was the first EDH deck I built from scratch and it is my favorite deck. It's a KCI eggs deck, and I use like moon silver key, it's great. Also the new necron that is a 4 mana fleshbag maurader is absolutely broken in the deck, because it's an artifact.
Your description of the baba lasagna deck is how I run shatter gang brothers. I should run her in that
A Nitpicking Nerds muchbang would break the internet 😂 I think an Amber ASMR with kitty treats would do the same.
I feel like Marchesa, the Black Rose deserved a shoutout. Her recursion ability is super unique and is very versatile in how it can be built around. Aggro, etb/death triggers, theft, modular artifacts, tribal, or a mixture of a few of those are all options. Every set that comes out gives viable options for Marchesa and even after 8 years of having her built I'm constantly tinkering, trying new cards, and love playing the deck.
Thanks!
Awesome video. I'm in the process of building Obeka. I may now need to build Baby Lasagna. And if there's a part 2, you gotta look into Noyan Dar. Azorius deck that turns lands into creatures with haste and +1/+1 counters on them when you cast instants and sorceries. Like, wut. Makes Terra Eternal playable.
I actually have both an Obeka deck and a Glissa deck. Gave me some ideas for Glissa!
Is ther anywhere to see Cherrie's baba lysaga list? I dont see it on your moxfield but I love the idea of being the ultimate golgari advantage drain engine. Thanks! Only really seen Joey's EDHRec's list which is a great list as well but would love to see what Cherrie's has as well!
Umm actually, nailed it with Glissa! She is my most recent deck and I built it as a deathtouch ping deck for the source of spot removal with the artifact recursion as my draw/ramp. Honestly there is so much death and destruction that Drivnod is not even necessary and mindstone/commander's sphere end up being too expensive to use for card draw when you've got the baubles. Soul-Guide Lantern > Nihil Spellbomb. Loved this topic :)
Hinata also works really well with Ghyrson Starn to get almost free X damage spells to targets, which he then triples in damage to the targets.
I have a yedora deck, i love it, super fun, no one sees it coming, you guys forgot to mention tribal force mage as the finisher, you can turn all your creatures into land creatures and then infinitely pump them with tribal force mage and kill the table, very fun.
My most unique (and high win-rate) deck is a Nalia d'Arnise top deck Orzhov deck. There are many of the party creature types that help you to draw, scry, and surveil. Couple this with cheap top-deck manipulating artifacts (Sensei's Divining Top, Bolas' Citadel, Codex Shredder and it's variants) and you've got a very aggressive deck that allows you to dig deep to always find members in your party and also solutions. Of note, cards like Vampiric Tutor, Enlightened Tutor, Imperial Seal get really strong when you can play them off the top. Syr Konrad and Doom Whisperer are overperformers along with the three Bob effects: Dark Confidant, Twilight Prophet, and Keen Duelist. Much of the deck's removal comes from creatures which is nice as you can really go digging if you need an answer. Would highly recommend. Currently, "Top Deck" or anything like it isn't listed as a strategy for Nalia on EDHrec
Baba Lysaga is an all time favoriteeeee. Glad she got a highlight!
Akshyually Baba Lasagna reminds me a lot of Braids Arisen Nightmare. And that’s a good thing. I can now make a pseudo Braids deck with a little splash of green.
18:30 I run Angrath Marauders in my Raggadragga Deck, it fulfills the 7 MV requirment, which Gratuitous Violence and Fiery Emancipation don't
On Obeka: you talk about Red Sun's Twilight giving them to you forever if you use Obeka to end your end step. But, you need to do exactly as you described. You need to move to your end step, make sure to announce it, and then activate Obeka to put her on the stack after Red Sun's Twilight (or similar card) activates its "beginning of next end step" trigger. If you do it before you begin your end step, then the trigger doesn't occur and it remains and will go off during the next player's end step. Just some advice for those thinking they might want to build an Obeka deck now, so they can avoid making some simple mistakes that could ruin their game.
is there a link to these decks anywhere? I didn't see it on their moxfield
If you saw Joey play Baba Lysaga and oh. My. God is that deck sweet! You can be certain the whole table will be going "Oooh wow" when you start pulling blinkmoth and rancor shenanigans...
Hello. Where can I find the decklists in this video? Thank you in advance!
I have Hinata X deck that is focused around casting Dovescape to cast HUGE spells that get countered and produce obscene amounts of birds to beat people with.
this was a REALLY FUN video idea ^^ ! you gave life to unsuspected cards with commanders that are so narrow and weird that it's hard to come up with an actual deck made for them! Thanks
I love videos like this because it really gets to utilize the insane magic knowledge you both have and share unique cards newer players like me (Guilds of ravnica was when I started) so we can get new fresh ideas. Keep up the good work!
Winota can be filled with humans that make nonhuman tokens so it always triggers and hardly ever misses. Remember, Captain of the Watch's Soldier friends aren't human and obviously Geist-honored Monk brings the team spirit.
I love to see what your deal is with the Deck tech with Tor waki the younger. spellslinger budget
the issue with a lot of unique commanders (not all of them) is that as soon as they're disabled or removed what's left is a weak deck that doesn't function correctly without the one card that makes the weird unplayable cards in the deck playable. these decks work better when there are other cards that at least kinda do what the commander does (for redundancy) or when the deck isn't loaded with otherwise unplayably bad cards.
i would love to have a Decklist of Hinata XD that deck looks sooooo great i have to try it myself
i´ve a question about yedora. With cards like "Life and Limb" all my forests are creature. So when my enemie plays a boardwipe and destroys all creatures ... i lose my complete board. How can i prevent this ?
Rhoda + Timin never left my mind, they are fairly good cards in Inquisitor Greyfax.

Nothing compares to the level of intimidation you have for sacrificing lands with baba and acting like everything is okay while going into turn 6 with three lands
Fun fact, because Aurelia’s fury says divide the damage, if you need to you can concentrate the damage on whichever target you need to kill, or in niche scenarios just knock a player out of the game
@Gillradical
Жыл бұрын
You would have to assign at least 1 damage to each target so you couldn't dome any 1 spot unless you paid the extra
Has Ideas Unbound been reworded? Because the cards says exactly what you explained before doesn't work with Obeka: at the end of turn, discard three. Doesn't with Obeka come the end of turn just earlier, but you would still have to discard three?
@JD-gk7eh
Жыл бұрын
If you tap Obeka before the beginnging of the end step, yes, you'd have to discard three. And you'd still lose to Final Fortune, etc. So what you do with her is go to the end step, put those triggers on the stack, and THEN tap her. The triggers all end up exiled/not happening because the turn ends before the resolve.
What's a muck bong? Is it Cheech in a mud hole? Willie Nelson using his trucks grill to heat up the spring?
Tivit voting theme is pretty unique since the only other common voting card is Expropriate
As a Baral, chief of compliance player, disallow is a pivotal flavor spell
I’ve been wanting to build a Treefolk deck (a favorite tribe in Lorwyn b) may see support with Ents in LotR. But dang that Treefolk is nasty, may end up building him next to my Tribal deck. Yuriko has been out forever and we all know her but her play style is very unique. Yeah you have to use top deck manipulation which a lot of decks run, but she’s the only deck that makes you care more about getting expensive mana cards to the top over useful cards. No other deck has me burning a vampiric tutor or a Lim-Dul’s Vault for a Shadow of Mortality like Yuriko does
I just built Baby Lasagna and it has Yedora in it, sacrifice something, get it back as a land, sacrifice it again it feels so stupid I love it.
Ideas Unbound says at end of turn. And you are ending turn. So therefor you would discard still
So does obeka let you skip the clean up step? So after tons of card draw you don't have to discard? Does that work?
@Blehandteh

no, cleanup step is the final action taken once a turn is done and another turn can begin. It isnt a phase that can be skipped
Took me like an hour to work out if Obeka works with Thawing Glaciers. I think she does, but I'm honestly still not certain about that. It's a really cool combo though, probably my favourite she has (assuming I understood it lol).
My Zaxara the Exemplary runs like the Hinata deck, its infinite mana, into x spells and x cost hydras, very similar deck thinks just different colors.
I really like my Atla Palani deck. Comes with sac outlets, eldrazi, and cards like Monster manual, dreamshaper shaman, and maskwood nexus. Funnest deck Ive played because I can play it very passive in multiplayer so I dont have a target on my back. Then someone attacks me and I top deck an Ulamog. Immediately changes the match
Shout out for mah boi Jiwari, Earth Aflame. May not be the most unique, but it is one of the least played! Any thoughts on doing a favorite "hipster" or least played commander's highlight?
The mirrex land is also cool with baba. Making mites with 2 types to sac.
Ummm AkTuallllY, with the Baba Lysaga, you forgot to add Conduit of Worlds to sac lands.
Could we get a decklist for the Baba Lysaga? :o
Uhm Aktuhually, With the mention of food, an April Fools episode could be titled "Mukbanging Nerds" and it's just you two eating food.
I had a Yedora deck and took it apart cus it combos so easily
Fun video.
Yedora is cool, but when I was testing it, it always got stuck. A 5 mana 5/5 that doesn't do anything by itself is rough. You feel like you don't really effect the game, until you either just win with a combo, or someone removes your pieces, and you sit there doing nothing.
Can we get ver basic deck tek on these commanders??
I have a Hinata deck which is really fun but my playgroup is super scared of her despite how niche her powers are and how hard it can be to use if you have no draw to get through your deck to pull something to end it like Comet Storm or Crackle with Power. Instead of trying to use tons of draw and tutors to make it super focused on just those cards, I turned much of the empty space in the deck into token generation. Shark Typhoon, Metallurgic Summonings, and Deekah, Fractal Theorist are really good at making not just tokens but making them huge because of Hinata's mass targeting power. Annointed Procession and Mondrak, Glory Dominus can both be used for more tokens. Storm-Kiln Artist makes plenty of treasure and with Thousand Year Storm you can get tons of tokens and/or do ALOT of damage quickly. Not the highest power deck I have because the design is slow but definitely fun on a good day. Was always curious about Obeka and this video does a good job at selling her playstyle. Have a deck I don't use much in the same colors because it is both unfun and sucks, will probably make the switch.
I love Yedora, I wish Scute Swarm had legendary also lol
