For those who were curious what became of Sergei he lived a pretty good life it seems. He did not stay in the military as he was a heavy chainsmoker from a very early age (who can blame him) but he got a law degree and lived in the Urals and passed away from a heart attack in 1990 at the age of 54. I understand the joke but I just want to say this for the sake of history and to give these children attention as well. During the U.S Civil War there was between 250,000 and 420,000 males (both sides combined) thag were under the age of 18 who got involved in the conflict. Including It's estimated that around 100,000 Union soldiers were 15 years or younger. The youngest soldier in the entire conflict would be "Edward Black" who was only 8 years old. He would also be considered the youngest casualty (wounded). The youngest soldier killed during the conflict would be "Charles Edwin" who would be hit by an enemy shell during the battle of Antietam. He died from his wounds 3 days later at the age 13. Keep in mind that a musician was also considered a soldier. There was 80,000 - 100,000 Musicians in the war. But it is not guaranteed that these numbers were mostly those under 18, among these musicians were also grown men. Majority of these minors weren't forced but rather volunteers due to the mind set of "Adventure, Fun, and Glory" The youngest noncommissioned officer would be "Johnny Clem" who became a sergeant at the age of 13 after he shot a Confederate Colonel. Also keep in mind that many minors would lie about their age meaning a minor who claims to be 18 but was really let's say...16 could've taken that secret to his grave when killed.

@@djsourcream2668 Ok so let me explain the history of the Shock Trooper in short term. Shock troopers were mainly equipped with light armor and a PPSH-41. Essentially the stormtrooper of 1941-1945 Russia.

In A New Hope, Leia specifically says to Luke " aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?". She uses the term stormtrooper specifically. So when you said shocktrooper, I thought you meant a star wars shocktrooper, not a russian one.

It’s beautiful how deeply rooted our survival brings us together. It breaks my heart knowing so many children shared the same childhood as this little soldier.

This was adorable to see how the soldiers took the boy in and loved him like their own son. Maybe some of them did have sons waiting for them back home or their sons were sent to war too on other regiments.

I was concerned about a 6 year old in the army but he's mostly a letter boy and moral booster with some keen eyes. That makes me feel better.

The youngest soldier of the Polish Army was Stefan Wesołowski (9) and he came from a noble family. He knew his ancestors' duty and took an active part in many fights. He was not a mascot, but a regular soldier. I'm not proud of it, because we should protect the children, but there were times when every "neighbor" wanted to slaughter us, so praise for the heroism of the youngest. I remember him because he died in the year I was born in 1987.

I can imagine him just absolutely flexing on his class with his uniform, gun and medals.

A kid who fought for his country he didn’t know any better all he knew was to defend his mother land that’s mad respect right there.

I asked my opa one time ''what was it like to be a young man was it hard for you'' and he replied with the most painful answer I had ever heard he said ''when I was 17 they conscripted me into the army when I was in my late 20's I was released from my p.o.w camp he said I never got to be a young man'' those words still stick with me to this day his brothers his family all taken from him by the war his only saving grace was he was to be sent to Stalingrad but his train was so late he was re assigned to czech and before people start hurling insults he was a machinist and he had no damn choice in the matter.

That is young to be lieutenant and that is an impressive track record for someone so young

Imagine actually being in this kids shoes. Imagine if when you grew up, you didn't have memories of going to school, but memories of war, bombs, gunfire, death and bloodshed, if that was how you grew up. Imagine fighting side by side with men that were terrified to do the same thing that you were, when other kids are afraid of the dark. Seriously, this is an unbelievable feat, I never knew about this story, I'm glad that I now do. What an absolute badass.....

Absolute legend, after watching the oldest and youngest solider you really see how important every life was against the fight against evil

I've been told, some of the least appreciated (by civilians) lads are the forward observers, forward air controllers, Aka FO, often some of the closest to the enemy, making sure our lads in contact have support, regularly in a spot where if they get pinned they're on their own.. Big respect, you should sleep sound knowing you've done your duty.

If that story is impressive enough then have a look at Alexander Alexandrovich "San Sanych" Kolesnikov. He became a son of the regiment at 12, but he actually hang a lot with the recon troop becoming a recon-sabateur himself. Ended up highly decorated (even by adult standards) and severely wounded a few times. His story is depicted in the film "Это было в разведке" (or "that happened in the reconnaissance"). There was a quite strong scene in the film when he came to the mess hall with all his awards at his chest making the elder soldiers who had ridiculed him earlier feel really awkward.

"Hans, the 6 year old is looking at us!" 'So? he is a child!" *HE HAS A PISTOL AND HE KNOWS HOW TO USE IT*

I'd love to see this "oldest and youngest warriors" series but for every country that participated in WWI and WWII

Well he was 6 in 1941 which means he was born in the 1930s s o he is not a boomer. A boomer was born between 1945 and 1965.

Not only is he not a boomer (the literal term stemming from the term “baby boom”), but Russians don’t have a word for boomers, or what came before them, since the birth rate didn’t skyrocket the way it did in the US.

Kid soldiers are more ruthless, there’s plenty of them it’s not a uncommon thing In certain parts of the world, and back then they had honor and actually took responsibility instead of playing victim, kids or teens would run away from home in the civil war or to fight in ww1 and ww2 or lie about age, they didn’t care they just needed man power

They fought for their survival against the war machine of the third reich, they had no choice but to fight against the nazis as if they won, they would have exterminated us, and the possibility of their victory was actually not that small, at least in 1941/42. It makes sense that every one had to be involved and at that time no one was joking, Stalin’s order to fully mobilise makes sense and is justified

Here is a clarification, children couldn't be conscripted in the red army. These were often orphans who joined on their own will. They often were given the role of distributing munition and few ever touched a gun. The uniforms were often resized by custom tailors to fit the child or teen. Their age would often be exagerated in documents.

Yes, that is true. And the Soviet Union and Russia does not try to hide it. There was even a scene when a child had a pistol and shot a German machine gunner at point blank range.

The irony of him being too frail to continue military service after the war. What a tragic life, but also what a hero.

@@LeCommieBoi That’s a possibility! My money, however, is in the fact that the Soviets needed every man they could get during WW2. After the war, they could afford to be more selective again and needed men back into civilian life to rebuild the economy. But I’m not a historian, so that’s my best guess.

War changes every aspect of a person and this 6 year old shows that war makes you mature quickly but still had the aspects of a child by keeping the soldiers morals up

I have a little brother the same age as Sergei and I couldn’t imagine him doing the stuff this child accomplished.

A lot of Soviet units had such children in their roster, so called battalion's sons/daughters. Most of them was orphaned and had no one to take care of them. Sergei was one of the youngest, that's why his story is relatively known. As strange as it may sound, children provided soldiers with emotional anchors amidst the carnage they were experiencing every day.

*Interesting fact from the movie, the young soldier hid under some trees when he saw a Gemran patrol coming his way and to make matters worse, a snake hung low near the little boy yet he stayed still and quiet, knowing that being bitten would have been preferable to being found by the Germans and captured or shot.*
