The $6 Planter - Low Cost High Profit - Make Money Woodworking

Yes, you can build this beautiful planter box for less than the cost of a single 2x4. So we all have a problem right now with our woodworking business or side hustle... the price of lumber is out of control. Well, I designed this planter to help solve our problem. I call it my 3 picket planter. It can literally be made from 3 fence pickets! The current price of a treated fence picket in my area is $1.99. And even better if you have access to used pickets!
So you can build this planter for around $6! And these planters aren't small. As far as what you can sell them for you'll have to research your area. I know what the big box stores are getting and it's crazy high.

Bought your plans which I was a bit apprehensive because I hate spending where I don’t need too, but! It was well worth it. Sold 10 in 2 days at $45 each. But I’m going to have to charge a little more. They take up a little more time that is like. Thank you for posting your videos!

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking our Home Depot did until I cleaned them out. Home Depot in my area mark them with purple paint. 75 percent off. I got 400 dollars worth of fence pickets for a 100 dollars. I looked for an employee first and told them what I was doing. I took ALL the bad ones. Even if they were too messed up for me to use. Sorted them out onto a cart Let them look and mark They were happy to get rid of them. They did not have to sort them. Saved them work. Sanded them down and installed them horizontally on a wall to make it look like Ship Lap. If I had that to do over again, I would paint the wall the color of the stain before installation. Also would have bought a Harbor Freight planer to save the sanding.

I was laid off my high-paying office job three months ago due to the recession (I'm 26, single homeowner with some debt to pay) and have been woodworking as a hobby for almost three years, while I got a part time job that barely pays half my bills and searching for a second job, I really need to find a way to make money with what I have. I have an expensive shop and stacks of pallet wood I collected for free (20+ pallets). I bought these plans, never supported someone else or used Etsy before but I feel inspired to just get to work, stop complaining, get something done and do it properly to make money, learn and maybe finally get my fire going again! Getting laid off was like being rammed by a car but I needed to be humbled. Thank you for these videos, subbed and will update if all goes well!

  • @ronj1602

    @ronj1602

    2 жыл бұрын

don't do the compound miters on the top trim. After you get the side framework assembled, and before you attach the side boards to the inside, run the top and bottom thru your table saw with the blade tilted to 7 degrees, that way you can build the top trim piece with only 45 degree miters. Just make sure you cut the bevels the right way so that the long part of the bevel is to the outside of the box on the top and inside on the bottom. Cutting the bottoms also make it sit nice and flat on the surface.

OMG I have used fence pickets in every single project I have done! I just find a building design that i think looks nice and literally make everything up from there. Framing to finish. I have spent a lot of time learning what typical construction standards are so that i have a good point to begin. In the last 2 years I have built 2 chicken coops, 2 dove aviaries, dog kennels, and a small pool house. I think my dad would be proud of his little girl. I only discovered my passion for carpentry around 5 years ago. Its very hard to practice a skill you want to improve when you can not afford the damn materials. So finding materials that are more affordable have been essential. I would love to figure out a way to become skilled enough to actually make money. Im very excited I found your channel. Thanks!

You can do a 4 spoke trellis with two cross pieces using only 1 cedar fence picket. Total cost is less than 5 bucks per cedar trellis. I've got a batch of them along with a couple of pine monsters sitting at a local nursery/garden center. We'll see if it takes off locally. I priced myself a bit low just to get a feel for my local market...it's not a big city, people don't spend stupid money on simple things quite as readily... If my trellises take off now that the weather is warming then I'll have to try these planter boxes.

After building one of these from the plans from your website, I have a couple of suggestions. On board three flip the placement of parts c and e with part I. This way a person can set the table saw and cut all remaining pickets to 2 inches wide with the last piece being 1 1/2 inch wide. Let I and H at 1 1/2 inch wide instead of 1 1/4 inch wide. The 1/4 inch does not make much difference and will add a little more support as the base. This also allows you to not have to reset the table saw to run these pieces through a second time

Great build video! One thing I will add for those planning to make these, is the 1 1/4” deck screws for the side panels will be too long for the thickness of the material in my findings. After sanding, a 1” screw is best. You say it correctly in the video, but those going off the cut list and materials in the description could buy the wrong screws as 1 1/4" are listed

Yah…. Screws poked out all OVER the legs of my initial build. I went directly off of the PDF - 1.5” screws are too long. 😡 I was pretty annoyed. I think setting the Kreg to 3/8” (vs. 1/2”) is better as well, so the (1”!!) screw head has more wood to grab & pull the joint together. I also glued the joints. First one came out marginally ok.

A bonus for me is that I have a bunch of pickets from our pool deck. Yes I save lumber. In fact I have a storage unit with a rack of it .. 😂

So......... I literally just came across your channel this morning, this is only my 2nd video that I've watched and om already in love with this channel!! I know its a divine appointment bc ive been asking the Lord to show me what to do with wood pieces that I have, bc I do have a goal that i need to reach. Your teaching method is simple and even my mind can grasp it 😂. You've gained a new supporter here! Many blessings to you!! Rae

Holy screws batman! Thanks Matt, this is an awesome project, I bought the plans to do this. Question.... why pocket screws for the wall boards? Screws are expensive. It seems you used 6 bucks in wood but 10 bucks in screws on this. Would brad nails not work. thanks! Love the Channel. Keep up the great work!

Was my exact thought when he started putting the wall boards in. I can understand for the frame, however using a little titebond III and some brad nails on the wall boards would save you all those screws AND a ton to time and if this is a production thing both of those two things are extremely important in profitability.

I don't know his personal reason but for wood projects that will have water I use screws for expansion and shrinking of the pieces. I've done constructing and remodels for 15 years with lots of old houses, things that are nailed loosen up much faster and easier than using screws. My experience and opinion

IMHO, that much dirt will be heavy as shit, especially after watering. It needs the support if you’re going to actually use it as a planter.

Neither Brad nails or glue (even titebond 3) hold up to the weather very well. Especially if you'll be moving these around w weight in them (into shed for winter?) or anything like that. If I was making them for my house I may still use nails just for simplicity and speed, but that's bc I could easily repair them if smthn happened. But if you're giving them a gifts preventing falling apart in a couple seasons is prolly worth the extra 5 bucks. Also, the screws are much better w permitting wood movement in changing humidity of outdoors AND the wall board being screwed to all 4 perimeter boards also strengthens the panel. In fact, if you wanted to save screws you'd probably be better off only using 1 pocket screw on each side of top and bottom rail, then 5 regular 1in deck screws (2 top 2 bottom 1 side) in the wall boards to secure everything tgthr... at least that's what I did. ... if you really want to go cheapest possible, you can even use drywall screws in the wall boards (since there won't be much shear force against them). And even though pocket hole tutorial on KZread warns against regular screws in pocket holes, IF you gear down your drill and are VERY careful not to over drive and split wood, you can get away w deck screws there too. Therefore, CHEAPEST YET MODERATELY EFFECTIVE SCREW OPTION = 28 x 1 inch drywall screws (20 for wall boards and 8 for top trim) and 32 x 1 1/4 deck screws (4 x4 for each panel assembly, plus 16 for attachment of B to A [4 down each side]) *if purchasing in 500 screw containers, that likely works out to 2 or 3 dollars total. Not bad. ... to bad in my area the wood is almost $30 : /

@@theoriginalmonstermaker yeah I think you're spot on with it. I'm going to try one without screws, I'm a big gardener when I'm not having an apathetic phase in life, and wanna see for myself what will happen with titebknd 3 and letting some wet dirt freeze in it. Should make a video because in any case it'll end up being informative. Even if the result is a given, it never hurts to see it with your own eyes

@@korey4944 I have a few of these around the house that I’ve made with glue and brads and they have been holding up excellent! As long as you use something like titebond 3 that’s water proof, they will last many years, even without screws. No harm in screws, they’re just not necessary. And if your building some to sell, just glue and brads are the way to go for time and materials sake.

Looks nice, I don't have a miter saw so it'd be a pain to try to build these but I've been looking at them since building another project recently that took a bit to work out and having one of those would have surely helped. I bet a similar small long window type planter box would be achievable for a low price and probably sell pretty well too. Thanks for another great project idea for everyone.
