The 5 stages of neuroplastic healing

Grab the free e-book that I mentioned in the video here:

At two separate times in my private practice I have had two different people (they didn’t know on another) express some pretty big frustration in their attempts to meditate. Both said the same thing to me, and this is a direct quote:
“...(trying to meditate) was like being locked in a dark room with an angry man screaming at me.”
I will never forget those words, nor the visual that came with them.
This vignette leads directly into this topic of neuroplastic healing sequencing and why it is so darn important to understand. It is especially important for us if we want to get off the spinning wheel of only coping and managing the symptoms and struggles that plague us over and over again, instead of actually moving past those symptoms.
Put another way, if you want to heal for real, then understanding (and eventually practicing) what is in this week’s video is mandatory for lifelong wellness and liberation.

Are you sure it was this stuff? There is no scientific evidence that this Polyvagal Therapy works. While the vagus nerve does play a role in transmitting and integrating emotion-related signals between the brain and the rest of the body, there is no evidence to suggest that it has any control over such behavior.

This is exactly what I needed to find right now. I’m going through a lot of changes right now with my mental health. I have been making positive changes, but it’s been overwhelming and my way of coping with overwhelm is, on top of learning how to sit with my emotions, is research. I’ve been through a lot of trauma, some childhood, some domestic, some alcohol dependency related, but I’m healing now and it’s nice to know what going on in my noggin and still give myself kudos for how far I’ve come.

I had to mix my meditation with journaling. Meditation doesn't make you anxious, it just shows how severely anxious you already are. it's like a weird mirror. If you don't have counseling or don't reflect on your life and feelings - seeing that mirror is frightening. Also popular meditation is always the sitting still and trying to silence a mind. Well if you experience trauma - how can you tell your brain to quiet? Your brain is screaming, lol. So do the meditation that works for you. I have ADD - meditation is lying in bed or doing gardening. When my brain feels safe, then it quiets. Remember, you and your body are healing together.

Good stuff! I recently started an exercise program with the help of a trainer and look at it as physical therapy. I come from that dysfunctional family background and know how to close off feelings. So when the trainer asks things like how did your body feel after the last session, it takes a moment for me to come up with a coherent answer. These training sessions are baby steps for me to become more active with my body and in the world. It's giving me permission to focus incrementally and not rush to the nearest gym to pump iron. Be well all. Thank you Irene.

I need to feel safe to be able to give myself this so I prefer to start with inner work. Thank you so much for your channel. It is been very helpful and informative. I've been recovering from my childhood traumas for over a decade now and during this time I've seen many psychotherapists. Sometimes those interactions have been more retraumatizing than actually healing. I feel like my own inner work and research from KZread, studies and books have helped me a whole lot more. For example, I was seeing a specialized traumatherapist who always engouraged me to focus on that part of the body where I felt the pain or numbness. That usually made me feel so much more disconnected and unsafe. She also encouraged me to just keep on deep breathing although I said to her that I just can't do that now no matter how hard I try. Then sometimes when big feelings like anger was coming on the surface and I started to feel helpless in the session she came into my chaos and started to fix it. When I said that I want to take a moment to regulate and can you please back of a little and give me space she couldn't do that and instead she started to ask me questions like "Well, how do you want me to help you then". At that point I just went to completele freeze. I've had similar experiences with many therapists. It also happens in several other occasions like in sport hobbies and even with singing classes. When you start to feel like your body is or is getting into freeze or other survival mode and you start to get panic and become passive people usually just seem to automatically push more. Give more advices, ask questions, even punishment.. Just about everything that just makes you feel more insecure. I cannot understand that. But I guess it just shows that most of us actually don't understand and listen to our bodies and when we see others in pain or helpless we cannot feel compassion and be there for them because we can't keep our own system separate from others and take the pressure off to create safety. That is a common pattern and cycle I see a lot. What you explain in your videos makes perfect sense to me and that is what I have learned through my own experiences and studies. But still it would be so helpful to find more interactions that actually helps you feel more safe because although I'm starting to understand myself, make progress with healing and connecting with my body I find it very hard to feel safe with other people and confronting them just keeps on triggering my body and leave me dissosiated for days or even weeks. It takes so much time for me to get my nervous system calm again. Sometimes it has made me isolate for long periods of time. On the other hand isolation helps with the safety but at the same time it can also enlarge the void between the connection and trust with other people. That is a conflict I find very hard to solve and I feel like it limits my life so much. I can't do things I'd like to because it takes so much time for me to recover from these interactions with people. And very rare people seem to understand. Sometimes it's so frustrating to try to explain yourself to people who just don't see or hear you and who keep on forcing and judging and systematically belittling your experiences.

Hi Annastiina, Seth here from Team Lyon. There is SO much wisdom in what you've written above and I couldn't agree with you more about how hard it is to find people, even those who are supposedly professionals in the trauma healing world, who actually understand trauma, how to work with it, and who aren't themselves traumatized and in fear. All I can say is that we here at Team Lyon got your back! Please keep watching the videos on this channel and if it fells like it would be helpful, know that Irene has created two online programs for people to do the work in their own home, and the biggest reason she created these was because of what you describe: there just are not enough good practitioners who really get it in order to meet the demand. Thank you so much! I’ll totally get your e-book. One of the problems I have is depersonalization-derealization disorder (I’ve had it for over ten years) and in stationary treatment they advised me to be mindful and meditate and it does help, just the mindfulness mindset did already help me a lot to move to the right direction but it helps only to a degree and then it doesn’t anymore. I used to make body scans every day for about 9 months and at the beginning it was helpful and I was a little calmer and then it got really bad, I almost couldn’t get endure staying still for five minutes because my whole body felt like a thousand ants were running all over it. I saw that as me having to learn to cope with my anxiety and after a while it did get better. But then after another while it got worse again and I didn’t have the energy to do this fight again so I stopped. But I am still meditating every once in a while although it’s difficult because it has teached me to focus my system and get out of the flight mechanisms I am living in all the time, even if it’s just a bit. I still get really anxious because I can’t deal with myself yet. My experience when I try to stop and look inside is more like I am looking and then falling into an abyss and there is nobody to help me. Like existing is pain and I shouldn’t exist. Mindfulness and meditation helped me start to teach my body and mind that it’s okay to exist and calm down at times. It doesn’t work completely and I guess my nervous system and psyche is just not there yet, but it does help nonetheless.

Hi nyctilla, Jen here from Team Lyon. From a nervous system perspective, depersonalization-derealization disorder is something we can experience when the nervous system uses freeze as it's go to response for dealing with stress. When this is the case, meditation can sometimes help manage symptoms but it's not a long term solution. The good news is that this (and a lot more!) can change when you learn to grow nervous system regulation and capacity. I'll link to a few of Irene's resources that might be of interest. Team Lyon Dear Jen, thanks for your response. This explanation resonates with me a lot. I have actually even described my state of being as “living in the freeze response” (means “Totstellreflex” in German which translates to “reflex to play dead”) before I had done much research on trauma and just knew about those three types of responses. I’ll check those resources out!

Also in my experience the issue with meditation is that moving is discouraged and it could potentially trigger a freeze response and following the breath if it's shallow and rapid can create more agitation and discomfort. What's more beneficial is resourcing and moving away from uncomfortable sensations so the nervous system feels more contained, has more capacity and feels safe and not go into overwhelm.

Relate to the mindfulness/meditation bits. I often used to find meditation mind numbing - just absolutely nothing there in my mind, in a strange quiet disconnected kind of way. But when I got into psychotherapy, started to realise how much I dissociated and I started to connect to my feelings, then meditation started to feel like a useful tool - I started to feel (sometimes scary) feelings come up during it and also moments of calm from it. I don’t think that would have happened without my therapist first helping me sit through feeling my feelings in therapy. I had a controlling, abusive, religious upbringing too like the people Irene describes.

I had a Greek World History teacher in high school who was passionate about Greek history and culture and who spent an inordinate amount of time on the Greek ideal of Sound Body, Sound Mind. That was 40 years ago. Crazy how much of our scientific "discovery" seems always to have correlations to ancient wisdom from a variety of disciplines. Also, how much arrogance has separated us from those disciplines, as if the ideas hold no value unless they are ours. How much energy are we wasting essentially reinventing the wheel? Alan Watts, Joseph Campbell, and Lao Tzu, the Bible, and myriad other purveyors of great ideas in philosophy may not explain the mechanical processes involved, but long ago identified operative keys and desired results. I don't need to know how an internal combustion engine works in order to drive a car. But, I appreciate VERY much that you've taken the time and effort to identify the complexity of the systems involved and describe how to manage them in coordination to facilitate healing because study of the ancients may give you the tools, they stop short of giving you the manual to use them most effectively. And going at it in a haphazard fashion could take decades with no promise of achieving the desired outcome. I'm glad to have all of that knowledge (liberal arts degrees ARE beneficial -- but that's an argument I engage in elsewhere), but very much needed a qualified guide to help me apply what I know. Thank you for being my guide! I can't tell you how excited I am to finally understand what has been happening to me and to have at least a solid direction in which to begin. I feel like I found you just in the nick of time as my therapist just this week started me on a daily routine of meditation to sort of calm my trauma responses in advance of their triggers (though I don't know what they are) which makes zero sense to me. I felt like she was giving me a prescribed response, generic to PTSD, without fully understanding the complexity component of my trauma.

I gotta rebuild the wheels from scratch and I really don't know how and too angry about that to focus. I really needed to cry for 2 hours about my loss of wheels. Ashwagandha is a hormone regulating herb (adaptogen) it reduces the stress hormone cortisol to healthy levels. Adaptogens also have many other benefits and I recommend to include it in your vitamin stack. Make sure you take 400mg of quality magnesium per day, a good form of magnesium supplement is Magnesium Bisglycinate, it is well absorbed by the body, another form of magnesium to take (which is like ice-cream for the brain) is called Magtein, this is a patented version of magnesium designed to cross the blood brain barrier. To answer your question - "how do I start tackling the second step if I never learned to calm down in the first place" Research, take control of your wellbeing, no one else will do it. Because of early trauma we didnt learn things at the critical time, but we are still alive and can learn now. How sick of suffering are you? Ask yourself these questions, Is just coping good enough? There is so much more we can do for ourselves, it is not hard work because it is your own liberation from suffering you are involved in, it can turn into a creative joy. Our trauma is not our identity, you are Eternal Consciousness, observing the play of existence. I recommend meditation also.

Hi Hypnosis for Entrepreneurs, Jen here from Team Lyon. Great to hear that you're interested in Trauma/Nervous System work! If you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend Irene's free Healing Trauma training. It's not a training in the sense that you're asking for one, and it gives a great overview of key concepts related to healing trauma through working with the nervous system. Irene's online programs aren't designed to be trainings for practitioners, and they are a great way to get this work into your own system which is a huge part of doing this work with clients. Her 21 Day Nervous System Tune Up can be a great place to start, and what you learn there would be supportive to most any other training you'd do. The Somatic Experiencing Training is a 3-year training, and the first year is foundational so some people do just the first year and then decide if they want to continue. What you learn in the first year is broadly applicable if you want to learn general concepts and practices related to working with trauma (it won't make you "trauma trained" and is always important to stay in your scope of practice). Hey! Nicole here from Team Lyon. So great that you're working with someone who does cranial sacral work and SOT work. It's hard for me to know what he's doing when "resetting the nervous system". My sense is that it's supporting the system to "settle"? They key with this work lies in shifting out of survival and into regulation. The trauma/survival piece is often missing in modalities. It doesn't mean that the work can't be helpful. It just means that it might not support accessing these deep layers. I would suggest asking him what he means by "resetting the nervous system" :)
