The five stages of grief, also known as the Kübler-Ross model, were introduced by psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book "On Death and Dying." These stages are not necessarily experienced in a linear or fixed order, and individuals may not go through all of them. The stages are:
Denial: The initial stage where individuals may have difficulty accepting the reality of the loss. They may feel shock or numbness.
Anger: As the denial stage begins to fade, the pain of the loss becomes more evident, leading to feelings of frustration and anger. This can be directed towards oneself, others, or even the situation.
Bargaining: In an attempt to regain control or avoid the pain of the loss, individuals may make bargains or promises. This can involve making deals with a higher power or trying to negotiate a different outcome.
Depression: The profound sadness and realization of the extent of the loss may lead to a period of deep sadness or depression. This stage involves coming to terms with the reality of the situation.
Acceptance: The final stage involves coming to terms with the loss and finding a way to move forward. It does not mean forgetting the person or the event but rather finding a way to live with the loss and integrate it into one's life.
It's important to note that not everyone goes through all these stages, and the grieving process is unique to each individual. Additionally, the stages may not occur in a prescribed order, and individuals may revisit certain stages multiple times. Grief is a complex and personal experience.
