The issue with bingeing anything is that your brain can only store so much in your short term memory much more productive to watch one informative KZread video. Then write a summary for the video, then watch it again while going over what you summarized. And after that take a 20 minute or so break to let your brain settle

As someone who graduated college 7 months ago, this is super valuable to hear! I loved the constant learning in school and now, in a new job, I feel like I’m still learning things on a daily basis, but a lot less than before. I think I’m going to make this 5 hour rule a new year’s resolution.

As a stem cell scientist, the great thing about my job is that you are pretty much paid to constantly learn and acquire new skills. I have also read several studies which show that age-related cognitive decline can be counteracted by cognitive training (to some degree at least). These benefits have mostly been observed in people with mild forms of cognitive impairments but also in healthy adults (I'm actually planning a video about that myself in the nearer future, at least it's on my list). So never stop learning!

My tips, as perhaps one of the more older viewers of this video, who has spent their life learning, is ...learn to enjoy the process, want to learn for learnings sake. 1) Start by learning anything you enjoy or that peaks your interest, don’t worry about whether it gets you a better job, sounds impressive, or if you even finish the topic (you can always come back to it). Doing something you enjoy will help make a habit. 2)Find subjects related to your area of interest and expand into them. For example, if you are a KZreadr, you might want to learn about lighting, film production or coding. Or perhaps you might want to study mechanical engineering or car maintenance if your interest is NASCAR. 3) In order to make sure you are learning in the best way possible and not getting gaps in your knowledge, try to follow some sort of structure. Either one you have planned out yourself or perhaps a syllabus taken from a college course, found online. This doesn’t mean you have to pay college fees etc (although going to college isn’t the worst idea in the world) but, the point is to just make sure your not going in circles or missing things out. 4)As you are doing this for yourself, don’t worry about grades, or what other people thing and don’t worry that it takes you 6 months to understand something. 5) Enjoy the process, don’t take it too seriously. It’s meant to be fun after all. 6) Finally. Just start, don’t over think. Start now. Just 5 minutes, start.

I've been following this channel for a while now, and the videos just don't stop surprising me. They are just SUPERB , and some how they keep getting better. This is proof that you put your advices to use. Thank you for the high quality and much needed content on KZread.

As a software developer, learning new things and technologies is a big part of the job. No software project is the same. I think for me it is more important to first get into the habit of exercising at least 5hrs/times a week. Without a solid base(sleep, nutrition, exercise) it is difficult and can even be pointless to try and add other things to the mix.

@@mauve9266 It really depends on what you do, for webdev for example it's usually much less important while for game graphics and machine learning stuff you will need more. However generally I think it's less needed than people make it seem like. It's good to know math but usually, you can look it up if you need it. But I am in my first job so my experience is very limited. If you're interested in the career I'd try to get a company visit to a company that seems interesting with other people from school or similar and then write up questions beforehand to ask when you're there.

Awesome video! Couple of questions/comments: Are you open to sharing your housing finance spreadsheet for looking for houses? My girlfriend and I are presently looking, and we have been struggling to organize that data in a variable and organized fashion. Skill/Topics Id love to see videos on: -Tax prep/simplifying & maximizing the process -learning inside your domain vs outside I work in a cancer research lab, regarding this topic on learning, I am curious if its more beneficial for me to read literature pertaining to my domain (Cancer Therapeutics) or in other interests (art, birding, microbiology, food, etc.). -is impromtu communication a skill? Obviously public speaking is, with practicing a speech, having a template/outline, and often times getting over stage fright. But what about improving word choice, tone, emphasis with less-than public speaking. Like in everyday conversations with people your comfortable with. (I hope I am not the only one who struggles with this).

One skill I find more and more important is ... to be concentrated ... to consume knowledge right ... to decide which information is knowledge and which not ... to process knowledge instead of consuming it in masses and not come to an conclusion or put these knowledge to use ... to use maybe 80% of already known knowledge instead of searching for the other 20 % ... One the other hand: you throw an (switch pro) controller way: do you really think that video games cant teach us nothing? that games like good of war, the last of us 2, horizon zero dawn or assassins creed black flag are a waste of time? I find "stardew valley" (or in general every game where you build up something under certain rules) very very teaching. They teach us the law of the harvest, they teach us about consistency and endurance .... or?! Can we really, really learn something from video games?

i think it’s important that we maximize our efficiency as a human race so a lot of jobs that can be automated should, we should start paying people a lot of money for jobs that advance/benefits us humans as a whole. Then we can actually pay people a little more for creative jobs too, I always wanted to work in music but no one values it, in terms of providing it a high salary. But if we automate enough jobs people can either actually pursue dreams or only work jobs where humans are REQUIRED. This way we’re always doing something important and valuing the human minds ability to be creative.

This was brilliant Thomas! (pun intended lol). Seriously, you guys did a great job and I've left with a good deal to reflect on which is a great feeling. I loved the intention for each shot and overall it was super entertaining. Life long learning is something I've learnt from my dad, who though he's been GP doctor for over 35 years, he is still always learning something new each day. In fact, my dad would always ask me; "What's one thing that you learnt today?" after I might have had a bad day at school and would default to say "absolutely nothing", but then again he would say... "well there must be something...", and eventually I'd realise that I did learn something amazing that day. It was useful hearing about career skills, domain dependence and essential skills. One thing I am challenging myself with is to comment on every video I watch. That way it forces me to reflect a bit more deeply on what I have watched, and also prevents me from wanting to watch countless videos that may not be very useful. I've been a big fan of your videos and podcast for years, but this may be the first time I've commented. Epic video.
