I remember the absolute RAFT of discussions that kicked up when KSSU released and we got "he absorbed A nova's power". People were torn between it being a mistranslation because Japanese doesn't distinguish plurals, or it truly being an indication that there were multiple NOVAs in existence. It was one of the first truly huge lore discussions in the series that a) wasn't about the anime and b) drew from actual game material and not just people having fun inventing ideas. Of course, we would later get KRtD and an outright confirmation that yes, indeed, there are multiple NOVAs. I like to think that KSSU was the start point of Kumazaki's goal of expanding Kirby lore. He took an otherwise one-off character and made it the first hint we'd get of what was to become one of the series' single biggest lore threads.

Hey Electrosa! Hope you enjoyed the video! The thing with RtDL is that Magolor's line doesn't distinguish that there are multiple mechanical stars in Japanese either. The way they're written, I don't think a Japanese reader would look back at these lines and think 'wow, so they hinted at Star Dream before they revealed him!' rather than just 'Star Dream didn't exist yet, so these were just about Nova'. And furthermore, while it's true that both Star Dream and Nova could be referred to with the term used in RtDL, being "機械じかけの星 (Mechanical Star)", the same can't be said about the line in SSU. Nova is the character's name, not what they are. Nova is the name of the mechanical star in SSU and Star Dream is the name of the mechanical star in PR. So saying "there are multiple Novas" doesn't make any more sense than saying "there are multiple Star Dreams". I do think Kumazaki believes deeply in and enjoys writing complex backstories and interconnected points, but personally I think that really started with Triple Deluxe. SSU and RtDL do have the beginnings of his referential style, but I don't think there's as much 'there's obviously more to the story than what was shown' as compared to Triple Deluxe and later games. As for the case of saying he planned for there to be another clockwork star as early as 2011 or even 2008, I think I can confidently say that's not the case as a fact, rather than just a guess, because they showed tons of concept art for Planet Robobot and Star Dream specifically, and all of the early designs for Star Dream were references to Zero and Zero Two instead of Galactic Nova. Star Dream was originally going to be some sort of mechanical version of Zero(Two) before they scrapped it and made him a second clockwork star at the last minute. If it were the case that Kuma was planning a second clockwork star years prior, I don't think we would've ever gotten these concept arts of Star Dream as a mechanical Zero. We also know as well that Kumazaki was originally planning on making a sequel to Triple Deluxe, before deciding not to do that and instead came upon the idea of Planet Robobot as "Kirby: Steel" to contrast Triple Deluxe's themes, so we know these concept arts of Star Dream can't have come from SSU/RtDL era.

@@SacredFaerie Hi! I had a grand time with the video. It was very thorough and had a great sense of humour. I think you've misunderstood my original comment. I wasn't referring to Star Dream at all. I was simply referring to the fact that Kumazaki made the decision in KRtD of confirming there being multiple clockwork stars. I know that in the original Japanese for KSSU, it's not distinct. That's why I was only talking about the fandom response to this line, and specifically the fandom response during the time and context of KRtD. Back then, "NOVA" was used interchangeably among the fans both as the character's name and a "species" name, because "clockwork stars", "wishing comet", "giant cat-faced thing that's got piano keys and lightbulbs all over it" were a bit of a mouthful. You can see this if you go back and look at all the NOVA OCs people made; the carte blanche granted by KRtD's addition was a wonderful time for the fandom. I didn't say that Kumazaki planned Star Dream early, or even any specific clockwork comet. All I said was that I, personally (somewhat fancifully) "like to think" that his work with KSSU was the /start/ of him wanting to expand on Kirby lore. KSSU was the game that introduced him to the series in a directorial capacity, and it's the game that has NOVA in it. Come KRtD, Kumazaki chose to do something with that character. It's nice to imagine there's a link.

So, the thing goes as: Magolor lies, which makes him trapped by hatred and obsession through of the crown. Then the crown is destroyed, which frees him, and apparently also frees him from his sins. My take is that thanks to him committing the sin of lying, he was punished by being trapped by the crown with its hatred and obsession. Then he was freed and apparently he did took that punishment as a learning thing, which made him redeem and then just make theme parks for fun and I guess that helping Kirby in Star Allies. I guess that, as he was simply freed because the crown was destroyed by Kirby, Magolor could simply not care and keep being bad after that, because the reason of why he was freed wasn't because he changed; he could have been freed from the crown and just haven't changed at all. So in that view, again, he took all of that case in and just decided to change, maybe to not end up being slaved again, but the point is that he learned through that and that punishment actually worked to make him a better person. By this interpretation I just like that whole topic even more. The man just learned and grew up. This could not be literally this way, this interpretation has the theories that him being trapped by the crown was basically a punishment, and that Magolor learned and grew up after being punished, but if it weren't like that I don't know why would he just decided to change after that. 21:01 The way those red circles appear... They just have so much drip.

The German localization of Kirby has some interesting translation errors and quirks. For example, very early on, King Dedede and Whispy Woods used to have different German names, as opposed to keeping their Japanese names. Whispy Woods used to be called “Stump Stumpf”, which can be translated to “Stum Stump” (like a tree stump). King Dedede used to be called “König Nickerchen”, which translates to “King Nap”. Some general interesting localization changes: Mr. Frosty has a PhD in Germany, being named “Dr. Eisbert”, with “Eis” being the German word for “ice”. In Amazing Mirror only, his name is “Dr. Eisbart” (“bart” instead of “bert”), which translates to “Dr. Icebeard”. Meta Knight got a hyphen and is called Meta-Knight. Bandana Waddle Dee is called “Waddle-Dee-Assistent”, likely because his first appearance with that name is in Triple Deluxe, where he throws healing items at you from the background. Kirby Super Star Ultra’s changes have opened a can of worms: The True Arena is called “Die Neue Arena” (“The New Arena”). All the “[Name]’s Revenge” bosses are called “[Name] Ultra”. I guess that makes sense, because it’s Super Star Ultra, after all. Galacta Knight is called “Ultra-Knight”, which sadly is not the most bizarre name change of this game. Masked Dedede is called “Dedede Inkognito”, which makes no sense, as he was not hiding his identity. This name has also stuck for his future appearances, none of which he is actually being incognito in. Dark Meta Knight, Shadow Kirby, and Shadow Dedede’s names are interesting, as the naming pattern is not consistent in Japanese, English, or German: Shadow Kirby (same name in Japanese) is “Shadow-Kirby” in German (praise the hyphen!). Shadow Dedede (“Black Dedede” in Japanese) is “Shadow-Dedede” in German, so you can tell the German localization translates from English rather than from the Japanese original. Dark Meta Knight (same name in Japanese) is called “Dark Meta-Knight” in German. There’s a hyphen after “Meta” but not after “Dark”, so that’s a thing. Now, let’s get to a straight-up translation error: Dark Meta Knight’s Revenge is called “Meta Knights Dunkle Rache” in German. This translates to “Meta-Knight’s Dark Revenge”, implying that you’re fighting Meta Knight rather than Dark Meta Knight. Out of all “Soul” bosses, only two actually have their names properly translated in German, those being: Magolor Soul, being called “Magolor-Seele”, and Soul Forgo, being called “Seelen-Ver’Ges” (“Ver’Ges” is a made-up word derived from “vergessen”, the German word for “to forget”, so it’s an accurate localization of “Forgo”). As for the other Soul Bosses: Drawcia Soul is called “Malias Essenz” (“Drawcia’s Essence”; “Malia” is Drawcia’s name in German and actually great localization because it keeps the drawing pun while also being a real-life name) Marx Soul is called “Max Ultra” (Marx is called “Max” in Germany *shrug*, and “Ultra” is consistent with the “Revenge” enemies being called “Ultra” in German. Soul of Sectonia is called “Sectonias Blüte” (“Sectonia’s Blossom”). Star Dream Soul OS is called “Sternengeist OS” (“Star Ghost/Spirit OS”. Void Soul is called “Void-Essenz” (“Void Essence”). Miscellaneous changes: Susanna Patrya Haltmann’s name was changed to Susanna Patryna (note the N) Haltmann. Fatty Puffer is called “Dicklipp” (literally “thick/fat lip”). Not a notable change, but I added it because haha dick joke. Sir Kibble keeps its name in the German localization, but Kibble Blade has a German name, “Ritter Rammkamm” (“Knight Ramcomb”), which rhymes, so it’s cool. As mentioned above, Drawcia is called “Malia” (from “malen”, “to draw”). Claycia’s German name is “Tonia” (from “Ton”, “clay”, and it sounds like the real name Antonia). Paintra is called “Farbhex”, which just translates to “Color Witch”, completely missing the naming theme. Vividria is called “Strahlhex”, which translates to “Beam/Ray Witch”, which is consistent with Paintra’s bad localization. Blade Knight is called “Sharpe Knight”, while Sword Knight is called “Edge Knight”. Those two name changes have actually happened in the other PAL localizations as well. Even though Meta Knight, his variations like Galacta Knight and Morpho Knight all have a hyphen in their German names, the same is not true for Blade (Sharpe) Knight and Sword (Edge Knight).

"Dr. Eisbart" is actually based on the "Mr. Flosty" in english. One letter diffrence, funny name. That is the one german localization in the series that is genuinely great and would be perfect if it didn't have its origins in something that was a mistranslation to begin with.

Void is a doozy because of how confusing he is in the first place, even in Japanese. Compound that with a further muddied translation and the clearest explanations of him being in Japanese-only things like interviews and it's no wonder how many people misunderstand what he is. I guess it's fitting that he's the essence of chaos...

Yea! Since English is kind of the universal language, translation between two languages are often done with English as an intermediary step, so in the case of things like video games, most other translations are done off the English version, and unfortunately I think every error in this video is reflected in the majority of localizations. In Void Termina's case though, his Japanese name is actually Ende Nil. Nil became Void and Ende became Termina, so Ende becoming Final instead isn't exactly wrong either!

8:08 My personal theory for that is that whoever translated this name did not realize that "Auto Customs" would actually be a correct term also used in english. It is not technically an incorrect change because a Custom Autos means the same thing, but it is still very silly due to the highlighted inconsistency. 8:39 Tbf to the translators on this one, Space Wonderia sounds a lot more engrish-y out of context, so I can understand the change. Maybe it would have been nice to implement a system to load custom stuff into the game depending on the language setting, so they could have changed the poster to say Spaceship. That also would have solved the Auto Custom-thing by making it plural on its writing.(And I feel like they could have reasonably implemented that feature, since the better localization effort wasn't a lie. The translators were infact given proper context for their work, as proven with how they renamed the canned food-figurine as being fish, which could have only been possible if they saw the 3D model of it.) 10:24 Oh yeah, the fun part where the true name of this little fella is Fecto Efillin. Which makes perfect sence with the spelling of Efilin, but less so with the changed one of Elfilin. 10:37 Unless I missed some major mistranslations, it is also one of the better translated ones into german.(German uses english as base, catches none of the more obvious pre-existing mistranslations and manages to additionally introduce complete nonsense like warping a description to somehow say the opposite of what it is meant to one time in Robobot or translating "Dark Meta Knight's Revenge" into "Meta Knight's Dark Revenge" in TD. Because knowing basic grammar-relations is appearently not a requirement to become a translator.) 13:46 This is also the description that was horribly mistranslated into german that I mentioned, where it instead somehow gets into third person, the subject becomes Star Dream instead of Kirby and the low chance of success-part is also reworded to fit the whole change. As I said, completely the opposite of what it was supposed to say, I have 0 words for that except "This sux and I'm mad". 14:23 This is the most infamous one? I don't really look into the Kirby community much except for a few fellas on Twitter, so I am genuinely surprised. It seems very possible that the translator simply screwed up the wording somehow and they instead meant to write "from the Jamba Heart that Hyness obtained from Dedede"(Which is still a bit weird because the heart simply fled instead of being collected, but it is vaguely fine narrative-wise). I actually expected Parallel Meta Knight's description here because they turned a rather ordinary piece of exposition(That even literal google translate manages to get across semi-decently) into a random bad end-scenario where Meta Knight(Or I guess a counterpart from a parallel world) couldn't be saved and was absorbed by the Heart, turning into a being of dankness...which is absolutely insane, lmao. 20:13 My guess would be: Because Forgotten Land was made after Star Allies. The way I personally understand it, the better localization-practices for Kirby are a new addition, which seems to line up with current releases. People were downright shocked when Fighters 2 had a proper translation quality and Forgotten Land was already in active development when that came out, as evidenced by internal files, so it was probably the first game influenced by the improvements made for that game. It should also be noted that the updates of Star Allies seem particularly rushed, since the basegame at least had the localization quality of the 3DS games instead of...whatever all that nonsense is. 22:15 Argubly the entirety of western Robobot is a weird anime-dub. Ignoring some of the botching of references, emotional undertones and even what amounts to flavortext, they also changed the plot of the Star Dream Soul-fight to the point where it completely altered the flow of the entire game's story by weirdly injecting additional tragedy. Essencially, what is supposed to happen in that fight is that after Galacta Knight got angry in the Meta Knightmare-What If, Star Dream by pure chance activates a hidden program and fights while dealing with the Memories from Haltmann it absorbed in the backstory-timeframe. What the localization changed it into(In what I can only assume to be 3 or 4 mistranslations stacking ontop of each other) was that while some of these details are left intact, the fight is implied to take place after Storymode because it is about Haltmann's absorbed soul rather than the lost memories(Which yes, changes the meaning of the erasure fundamentally). This also means that Meta Knightmare Returns isn't a What If anymore, but rather a sequel to Storymode involving a second invasion and the whole shenanagans. I had a whole fanficy theorychain at some point explaining how this makes ANY sense at all and I am glad that I now know that the mess wasn't just the fault of me being stupid, it was the result of the localization team completely changing the story of the game. And that is why localization consistency is so important, even just changing or adding one or two sentences can change absolutely everything due to how these things logically connect.

Great to hear your thoughts! I'm actually acquainted with two other German Kirby fans, Meta Knight's Dark Revenge will never not be funny. As for my choice on Star Allies, it's a difficult game to choose a 'top' error because so much of it was wrong. I chose this one because it's the big joke that people always go to when talking about Star Allies' localization, and it'd be easier to talk about than something more general like "Void's lore" which would basically span across various texts throughout the game.

Thank you for this video. I don't find many people talking about translation errors in Kirby games. I remember once stumbling across a post comparing the English and Japanese version of Kirby Planet Robobot and was surprised at how many differences there were. The noble Haltmann's song is a mess, in English and Spanish. The original title of the song is a reference to the Japanese title Milky Way Wishes and that got lost in translation. The lyrics of the original song are more about praising Haltmann. The name of Susie's mech was not included in the pause screen of her battle. Another thing that caught my attention is that the author of the post explained that Susie speaks more formally in the Japanese version and stops doing it when she steals Star dream's controller. In the scene where Kirby goes away in the halberd mode, Susie calls him "Kirby of the stars" and in English and Spanish she never calls him by his name, she just refers to him as "Pinky". Maybe I'm overreacting, but I feel like these differences ruin her character.

I absolutely despise Battle Royale's writing but it is true that it exists and has people characterized like strange halfway caricatures between their game and anime depictions. Even if I didn't hate it though, I think it wouldn't be hard to argue that its characters are OOC and not the norm. Bandana Dee and Dedede being the easiest cases to bring up. Hell, Star Allies' Bandana Dee description even talks about how great he is in comparison to silly Waddle Dees that use parasols, and he uses a Parasol in Battle Royale, sometimes I wonder if that description is a purposeful jab at Battle Royale's writing.

Nice video! Actually I somehow didn’t know about the Parallel Dedede translation, I could have sworn it was the omission of the Four Matters and and origin line. And I’m glad you analyzed the reasoning behind these mistakes, it was a nice and interesting touch. Anyways, there’s a mistranslation/change in Forgor Land that really bothers me: every time Elfilin talks about Elfilis, he says “My other half, Fecto Elfilis.” This is not the case of the Japanese version, where he just says “Fecto Elfilis”, and I believe this little dialogue change may be why so many people believe that Elfilis is Forgo. Still it’s not the most bothersome error by far, and the Wonderia/Wondaria thing is certainly more annoying for the fandom.

It's just my opinion, and the exclusion of the four matters was another choice I considered for Star Allies! So it very well could be the biggest translation error of Star Allies. I kind of interpreted the mistranslation of Parallel Dedede as being basically the same as the original in meaning, or at least the first part, with “brought to Hyness” meaning something like “brought to Hyness’ attention” or, like, that Hyness was able to get the Jamba Heart because of Dedede somehow? I wouldn’t have known that the second part was incorrect, though. I would also assume that the reason they changed Meta Knightmare Returns is because they thought it was too similar to Meta Knightmare Ultra or something?

Unfortunately, the pause descriptions for the Sphere Doomers and Whispy already clearly indicate that the game's new text was not translated with any care. Return to Dream Land Deluxe's pause descriptions will surely be the topic of my next video in early March.

I've read your translation documents. Some are good. I think you did a decent job with PR because as someone who actually likes Treehouse's localisations a lot of the time, they let me down there. But I don't agree with what was described in RtDL with what you interpreted as boss titles for Sphere Doomer. For the other bosses, they were quite clearly a sentence of their own as a descriptive title. But for Sphere Doomer, it was clearly not a descriptive title. But with that said, one question I have is do you know of any similar issues to Planet Robobot or Star Allies in Forgotten Land? Because I looked at your docs, the parts 3 and 4 are repeats of 2. And no issue of significance caught my attention.

Forgotten Land's translation is very good, I only have minor nitpicks about it. The three biggest things I can think of is that 1. the Jp text says that Meta Knight came to the new world after Kirby, but the English says he came before Kirby. 2. Leongar's figure description reveals Elfilin's full name is Fecto Elfilin 3. One of the figures mentions that the ones who left the planet did so because it was getting too cramped

@@SacredFaerie I appreciate that, ctrl F failed me the first time for some reason. I must admit, the only real criticism you have that I disagree with is in the one about the can item and vending machines, you claimed that the japanese explained how cans became collectibles. I did not understand where that came from. Otherwise, I commend you for at least having some level of understanding of what localisation is, not labelling every change as bad and you have enough self-awareness of when you're being nitpicky. Something a lot of "critics" of localisation fail to do.

Ok but the parallel versions of the characters are supposed to be different but still similar versions of the characters so the translation team thought: what if this dedede was evil and decided to help hyness to get more power.

The worst translation error in the series as a whole has to go to Dark Meta Knight's Revenge being translated as "Meta Knight's Dark Revenge" in the German Version of Triple Deluxe. I mean the German localisation prior to Super Star Ultra was an inconsistent mess with dumb name changes. But this is just a whole other level of absurd.
