My son was eating at a restaurant in Sante Fe, NM on Monday. Talking with a couple at the next table, they discovered they were both Vikings fans even though one lived in Texas currently. "You'll know why," the woman says, "when I tell you my maiden name. Tarkenton. My grandfather is Fran's brother. Fun coincidence!

At the NY Giants web site the most notable trades in Giants history are listed. At the top of the list are trades for two HOF quarterbacks, one is Fran Tarkenton. In five seasons with the Giants Tarkenton was named to three Pro Bowls and selected to two All-Pro teams. The Giants organization regards the 1967 trade for Tarkenton one of their best trades in team history.

I don't know, I might rate it as a bad trade. Yes we picked up two outstanding offensive lineman which is great. But we lost out on Fran's very best years at a time when the Viking defense was the best the league has ever seen from 69-71. No defense will ever come close to what the Viking's D did those 3 seasons. The defense gave up just 7.5 points per game in 69, only 8.2 points per game in 1970 and only 8.9 ppg in 71 with Page winning the MVP. I think we lost 3 championships those 3 seasons. Those 3 defenses set many records that will never be broken. My favorite is the consecutive streak of games not giving up more than 2 touchdowns. The second longest streak in history is 18 games. The Vikings put together a streak of 42 consecutive games.

@Zoyx Finks passed on the best players on those teams. For one example, he took a cokehead RB from OSU instead of a LB from Penn State (Jack Ham). He drafted a punt returner (Charlie West) instead of a QB from Alabama (Ken Stabler). He drafted a RB from Mich State instead of Purdue QB Bob Griese [Syracuse RB Floyd Little was also available] and then Gene Washington instead of Gene Upshaw. Every team should have drafted Larry Little, but Bobby Bell and Jan Stenerud should have been Vikings. Luck was probably a factor in taking Jeff Wright; the rest of that Minnesota draft was horrible.

I don't know about the Jefferson trade. Yeah we got all the fancy stats and ESPY like catches to help Kirk pad his stats, but the worlds greatest WR only helped us get to the playoffs once in 4 years on his rookie scale contract, and now we have to pay a WR $35m/y. The Bills made the playoffs all 4 years with Diggs, and won a playoff game every year too (4-4). Not that keeping Diggs would've helped us get to the playoffs more often those 4 years, but we did make the playoffs 3 out of the 5 years he was here.

Tarkenton started "clicking" very early in his career. By 1964 the expansion team, who had by far the worst defense in the league their first 3 years, finished 2nd in the division. The Giants, who were 1-12-1 before Fran joined the team, finished 2nd 4 straight years with Fran at the helm. Fran did have an off year for him in 1972 but still took the offense from 2nd worst in the league averaging 4.0 yards per play to averaging 4.8. The defense went from being #1 three straight years to average because of injuries. Also Fred Cox, who was usually reliable missed 5 late kicks which took the Vikings to 7-7 instead of 11-3-1. One more tidbit about Sir Francis. If you use the "REAL GOAT" scoring system which compares all the great quarterbacks since 1947 to the average quarterback of their era and then to all the other greats you will find that Tarkenton was farther above average during his career than any other quarterback of the last 76 years. He wins by a comfortable margin over Peyton Manning who is comfortably ahead of Drew Brees and Johnny Unitas who finish 3rd and 4th.
