The 5 Best-Kept Secrets for Ivy League Admissions

It's very difficult to get into an Ivy League University, or any Top 20-ranked university, because they have acceptance rates of only about 5%. That means that out of every 20 students who apply, only 1 will actually get in. Those are not very good odds, even for high-achieving students. Thank you for the brilliant overview. Love your tips on what to write. One question - does learning to code and getting an internship related to programming count as "having an impact?"

No. Having an impact means adding value or making a tangible improvement to some community you belong to. If you learn to code, and then offer free website services to nonprofits in your area, that could constitute having an impact.

Thank you for the overview. Talking about personal statements, is it ok to write about how bad relationships of my parents impacted my growth? I am aiming for pre med and become psychologist or psychiatrist.

Yes, you can write about that. As long as your story isn't a "downer," and you used the experience to fall in love with the subject of psychology, etc. Most of the essay should be about you, and your academic growth, and not about someone else.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a "slow start." It's what you accomplish sophomore, junior and senior year that will matter the most in college admissions.
