I've spent years being frustrated by fake-sounding virtual instruments, so I've developed these techniques to get as realistic a sound as possible. The MIDI piano technique in this video will breathe life into your VST piano songs.
I'm looking for artists to work with! If you liked the production in this video and want to work together on a project, here's where to start. You can hear some samples of my work and fill out an information form to see if we'd be a good fit to work together: lucasfourniermusic.com

    I almost always layer pianos like that as well, but the “room mic” and recording just the keyboard is next level. Such a cool idea.

    Great tips! This is one of those things that clearly makes a big difference in your final sound. I like adding a touch of RC-20 vinyl noise for some ambience low in the mix on the piano group bus too sometimes.

    I've done the multiple pianos before. (In Studio One, you can still put them all in one track called a Multi)...BUT...the part about using your phone as a room mic....genius! LOVE that. I will be trying that! I also love RAUM. Been a fan of NI for a long time! Alicia's Keys piano and Noire are my two starting points for pretty much everything. Piano Colors is also pretty nice.

    the room mic technique is basically how a chamber reverb works but without the reverberation room

    I find it a bit odd to use three different sampled pianos to emulate a real one. There are good VSTs out there (from Arturia for example), where the different mics and positions are part of the VST settings.

    I think I talked about it a bit in the video, but you'll never have the same amount of control with those settings, especially in terms of panning and individual processing of each mic. Not to mention you could do this technique with free or super cheap vsts, whereas the arturia stuff is $250

    bright piano should be panned to the right cause the higher notes are on the right side of the piano

  • @lucasfourniermusic

    @lucasfourniermusic

    true, I usually do it that way! But the plugin Postfelt (the central piano in this project) actually already has a bit of stereoization built in, and the brighter sounds are to the right like you said. So it was a bit too imbalanced in this particular project. But generally speaking, totally agree!

    What I was wondering, if you layer three pianos, would you do panning on them? if so, what exactly? would love for you to get back to me! thanks!

  • @lucasfourniermusic

    yes absolutely! I pretty much always pan one left, one center, and one right, but there's no hard and fast rules to it. Although someone made a good comment which is that the higher notes of the piano are on the right side. So a cool way to possibly emulate that would be to have your brightest sounding piano on the right side.
