The 240SX Gets A Massive Big Brake Upgrade!

In today's video, the 240SX gets a 4-wheel big brake upgrade! Conversions like this are fairly common, but most of the time you'll only see it done to the front. I was adamant from the get-go that, if I did a conversion, it would need to be done to the front AND the rear so that everything matches. I ended up getting custom front and rear kits using WIlwood components. The front brakes consist of 13" slotted two-piece rotors and 6-piston calipers. The rear brakes consist of 12.2" slotted two-piece rotors and single-piston calipers that allow me to retain the parking brake. I also swapped in a brake booster and master cylinder from a Nissan 300ZX to balance everything out. All in all, this turned out INCREDIBLE! The brakes bite hard and are surprisingly easy to modulate. They fill up my wheels nicely and look stellar. Enjoy!

    One thing I notice is hat the rear brake pads are very small. It doesn't seem like they would be doing that much to help with stopping. I know cars have a 70-30 front to back) braking characteristics but this seems more like 90 in front and 10 in back.

  • @saabkyle04

    @saabkyle04

    6 жыл бұрын

    illstplaya They’re bigger than the original setup at least. I could have done a 4 piston setup, but I would have lost the parking brake. You possibly could have done a dual caliper setup, but I’m not sure how that would work with the stock parking brake. I don’t know what the exact bias is, but the new brakes sure do work great. They don’t lock up as much as one might expect and the pedal feel is really nice. I’m actually surprised it turned out as well as it did. Call me impressed 🤙🏻

    Yeah... those brakes are massive! A brake upgrade like this is largely unnecessary for most people, as upgraded pads and fluid will suffice for most enthusiasts. This kind of upgrade is more beneficial for someone who takes on endurance races and/or very high-speed courses. Though one benefit that may most may not "need" but want would be the improved brake feel upgraded calipers like these provide. I always wondered why Wilwood brakes are so popular with the DIY community, and the price (compared to competitors) as well as ease of installation seem to be why they have a following. Thanks for uploading!

    Thank you for watching! Aesthetics were also important for me. Yeah, they drive great, but they also fill up the wheels nicely. The stock brakes looked terrible with the new wheels haha.

    Thanks! It's a great car to learn on too. You can literally do anything you want, there's so much aftermarket support. Plus, it's relatively simple (no ABS, no airbags, no stability control, etc.)

    Been watching your videos. Hope to restomod my 240, as well. Nice brake set-up. One question: why choose the Wilwood kit over the NA 300 ZX brake swap?

  • @saabkyle04

    @saabkyle04

    6 жыл бұрын

    The 300ZX swap is the best value for dollar by far. Some companies even make big brake kits using 300ZX calipers. I went with these because of the size and that they would almost completely fill up my wheels. I was worried that Z32s would still look too small with the 17" wheels. The Wilwoods are not necessary by any means, but I'm happy I did it. Thanks for watching!
