@@hummel003 No, let me correct myself. I meant every game that did well in America and/or would show up on anyone's top 50-100 list, as well as quite a few obscure ones I never heard of. I basically went crazy on them and I've boiled it down to about 50 that I can't do without and I sold the rest. The funny thing is, I found that I'm a little more predictable than I thought, because I kinda stuck with the obvious ones you might imagine that I would. So I didn't have to do all that work LOL. It was fun though!

I know it's been discussed to death, but playing Super Mario 64 for the first time as a wee little 6-year-old was life-changing. I lost countless hours just walking around the castle, exploring every corner because _it was the first time I was ever able to do anything like that!_ Making discoveries on my own (which, in retrospect, were obvious) made me feel like the world was alive, especially after growing up almost exclusively with a Sega Genesis. There are tracks of its soundtrack permanently burned into my memory for the better - like Jolly Roger Bay, Shifting Sand Land, and just the Castle's main theme - due to listening to them for hours and hours at a time. There are much better 3D platformers out there, even on the N64, but I'll never forget that first big jump from 2D to 3D. As a kid, it felt magical.

Ocarina is a terrific game indeed. But being honest and open-minded, I don't believe it's the best N64 game. It easily could be if two other games hadn't been made. Its richer and more comprehensive successor, Majora's Mask, and the most fun and magically brilliant, profound game of them all, Banjo-Tooie.

@@Jack_80 The video explicitly said the list isn't ranked. That doesn't mean it's random--there is a little bit of grouping by game type and series. I can only guess as to why, but because these guys have evolving ranked lists on their website by popularity, perhaps they thought this list would be a little more stable if not fully ranked. Also, it does get a bit predictable to see Ocarina at #1 and stuff like Mario 64, Super Smash Bros., and Banjo Kazooie consistently not far behind.

It is! And I'm equally disappointed, but not that surprised. Although, seeing some rather unexpected entries, like "Sin and Punishment" (which is very good, but most of us, probably haven't played it, before it released on the Wii VC) or a wrestling game, instead of this practically still unique and unmatched classic, irritates me. But, I think we have to face that the series is seriously dead and forgotten by the public. Same goes for "1080°" and "Excitebike", I guess.

Well, everyone knows Banjo-Tooie is actually the best N64 game, it was loads more immersive, creative, challenging and magical, but it was the popular series Donkey Kong 64 that got to testify to this great truth. These games were on a vastly more magical, epic route that no later games would match. The industry has failed so hard to even gain the wisdom and vision to comprehend such anomalies. Even with many more flaws than Tooie or games like Majora's Mask, DK64 testified to the fact that Nintendo was in its golden years with this concept, and would never return to this age for at least three decades. They have started to again with Mario Odyssey, a game that copied parts of the fantastical but made it more mainstream and flashy and less imaginative, for those who might wish to understand again.

What about Mario Golf? I’ve put in countless hours playing that game both solo and with friends. It has the classic playful charm you’d expect from a Mario game yet the physics and mechanics are extremely solid which makes for a challenge that you can respect. There’s a bunch to unlock and plenty of challenges if you’re playing solo and there are several different multiplayer modes. It’s a game I still go back to on occasion all these years later. Also Mario tennis is another classic especially for the multiplayer.

In all honesty compared to the rest of the list: It's rather lackluster. Not to mention borderline unplayable if you didn't have a copy of Pokemon on the Game Boy at the time, as the Rental Pokémon were arguably useless. And before you say "Mini-Games" Mario Party has that beat by a mile.

  • @minzblatt

@@TheDuckClock Not just the mini games which were awesome and nothing like Mario party... but also the insane amount of knowledge it offered on battle strategies at a time where nothing like it existed. There were challenges with randomized teams of pokemon where you really could show your talents, but also that package there was pretty much what everyone was getting and it included that transfer pack. Not only offered it a useful databank for your pokemon, but you were then able to compete in the Stadium against a strong league plus could play your gameboy game on big screen in fast mode. So yeah, Stadium over Mario party everyday for a kid growing up with few friends to begin with.

One of my favorite N64 game/series that I enjoy playing all the time- Vigilante 8 and its sequel Vigilante 8:2nd Offense from Activision and Luxoflux. Its a vehicular assault game genre series with a lot of great characters- a really good plot that deals with time travel to some extent and has some characters go good after the first game and also has one key character go from good to evil after the first chapter is over. The character sound effect voice tracks are really interesting and the music tracks- some can be annoying- but others sound really cool!

This was almost basically the games on my shelf back then. The N64 didn't have the widest library, but the best games on it were some of the best in the series or some of the best games of all time. Back in the day I wasn't buying 100s of games anyway, so I didn't really care about that criticism. Rare in particular were at their absolute peak. The variety of genres and level of quality of games they put out is insane for one studio. Between them and Nintendo, it was almost all I needed, but it did have some extra gems outside that. Wrestling games in particular have just gone downhill since in my opinion.

Man, this is an absolutely stellar list, and it really illustrates just how spoiled we were as gamers back then. True, the N64 lost a lot of mainstays; Final Fantasy moved to the PSX, and there were barely any fighting games or RPGs, but Nintendo really took "quality over quantity" to heart with the N64. Rare was firing hit after hit, and Nintendo's own offerings were nothing to sneeze at, either. I personally think we could have ommited Banjo Tooie and MAYBE Perfect Dark and Majora's Mask if only to highlight other games instead of sequels/successors, but they're all top notch. I think at some point or another I had all the games on this list. Here's to hoping we get that N64 online app.
