The 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Is A Powerful & [Slightly] Efficient Big Luxury Truck
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
After nearly 2 decades of being the same old truck, the #ToyotaTundra finally gets a big redesign that brings it up to par with its rivals. For the first time, #Toyota is offering #TundraHybrid, dubbed the #iForceMax #Hybrid. It combines an electric motor with the twin-turbo V6 engine to produce nearly 600 lb-ft of torque! Fuel economy is around 19/22 MPG and this electrified engine comes standard on top trims like the #TundraCapstone.

We finally got a chance to spend a full week with the new Tundra with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain and it impressed us for sure. There are definitely certain times where the Ford Powerboost rival offers advantages, but we also feel like Toyota should consider offering a plug-in hybrid. It would make it a very option in the segment. Do you guys agree?

The weight doesn’t make a PHEV practical. You’d get a 5 mile ev range. Plus, Toyota was determined to use old battery tech, so much so that they deleted the rear under seat storage to use the cheap outdated batteries. They’d have to redesign the truck substantially to use different batteries.

Yes, Toyota should have gone after a full plug in EV. Maybe in another 15 years? I'm beginning to realize, Toyota either doesn't have the ability to keep up with progress, or doesn't care to. Either go with a full EV, or Toyota should have just stuck the 10 speed trans in the 5.7. I sorta think Toyota is now relying and taking advantage of the hardcore Tundra fan.

Nice truck. Good review. I don't understand the obsession with the 0-60 times. The human mind cannot perceive a 1/2 second difference in 0-60. Most people do not floor it from a stop every time they accelerate. They will not brake torque. A good 25% of the review is testing 0-60 times.

Remote start is activated by pressing lock twice and on the third click hold it until lights flash, that’s engine remote start confirmation.
I need to see way more than a couple mpg fuel savings to justify the cost and future battery expense in a hybrid.
How is the driving assist technology? Any self-driving tech comparing to GM super cruise? Center lane keep assist or other?
I had a budget of 75k for a new truck . Drove 1 of these with off road package. Pretty nice, but to me wasn't worth the $63k. I snagged a 2019 sr5 4wd double cab well equipped for $39k. Has 14k miles, certified pre-owned with 84 month warranty or 114k miles. I'm just hooked on the old school v8 engine. Looking forward to doing a catback exhaust. This truck sounds great. Almost at good as my 2021 gt mustang 👌. Tons of power, and very smooth.

You do realize that it’s the same from 07 on up until just recently. The 5.7 V8 is great but it is a gas guzzler for sure. The smaller v8 wasn’t so bad on the gas. Me personally I’d get this model. Going to wait 2-3 years and get it used. You made the smart move getting the older one as it is already depreciated.

Hauling Firewood, Home depot runs, and towing atv's. The fuel savings didn't add up compared to spending an extra $20k to $30k. I really love how well equipped an SR is compared to base model from any other half ton truck. It would only be more enticing with an iForceMax and hopefully with the market changing and/or normalizing again Toyota won't be super slow to react like most other automakers.
If they put this powertrain into the RAV4 Prime plus the more powerful electric motors, that would be amazing.
Agree with the excessive price tag on the Capstone. My choice will likely be the TRD Pro saving about 6-8k without losing too many features. In my opinion the TRD Pro is a better looking truck.

Toyota wrote the book on trucks. If they brought their Hilux here decades ago, Ford & GM would have disappeared from the vehicle market altogether. The gripes about this truck may be many but like all Toyotas, they'll always get the job done.

It depends on what you are doing, but with how massive these trucks are nowadays, 0-60 time helps determine if it will pull off the line quick enough for passing on a highway or coming off the highway on ramp etc. Of course this isn’t no raving truck but you also don’t want this massive lumbering vehicle either.

@@jghall00 You do realize this is a pickup truck? Torque (Low end) and to a degree horsepower is what counts most. Performance 0-60 does not translate well, given the weight/design. The new hybrid powertrain is the strongest selling feature. Not offering a V8 option is the weakest selling feature. A LOT of people will remove the Tundra from their list for that. What is with the massive drivetrain 'hump' in the rear floor? That effectively takes away the middle passenger position, unless someone in the middle doesn't mind having their knees up into their chin. Not to mention: F150 and Ram both have dimensionally flat floors..... much better and more versatile for hauling large items without having the 'see-saw' rocking issue over the hump. Thought this was going to be more efficient. No thanks.
Several recalls already, let's hope this trucks turns out as reliable as buyers expect.
Hybrids, catalytic converters and emissions laws wouldn't be necessary if they just made engines that burned gas efficiently. Injectors are squirting liquid fuel into piston chambers where only the vapor from that fuel ignites. Then you have most of the uncombusted fuel leaving the exhaust in the form of "emissions". A vapor injection system would yield more power, hardly any emissions and several hundred mpg. Shell oil research scientists already made such a injection system in the 1960's. Several large cars were made to go several hundred mpg. One surviving Ford Ranchero which got over 200mpg can now be found on Tiktok and is in a private collection.
