    @@RealDoctorMuffinsyes it should have been icing. blame the linesman for swallowing the whistle until it was too late. the rules allow for adjustments to whether a goal should count based on a referee's whistle because everyone understands playing to the whistle; Hathaway should have been granted that same leniency because the linesman screwed the pooch on that play.

    Even discounting the icing, it was a pretty clear boarding. Yes, the officials could have and should have avoided the play entirely, but it was still a bad hit. At the end of the day, I still think torts is correct, just with one small discrepancy.

    Video request: Managing rookies. The managing of Leo Carlsson has been different compared to what you usually see with less games played and more focus on development through practice as I understand it. While Bedard and Fantilli play every game without fully grown bodies. I would like to see you break down the thought processes behind different strategies to develop prospects short and long term. I find the topic interesting as there seem to be more discussion on who to pick instead of how to make the picks you get succeed.

    I've been a hockey fan since the 90s. In my experience, the more complaining there is about officiating, the more new hockey fans there are. The fact that we're seeing a lot of complaining about officials means there are a lot of new NHL fans. And to any of you who may be reading, welcome! Just be aware, hockey is the hardest sport to play, and it's the hardest sport to officiate. Don't like that? Then watch basketball.

    Great coverage of so many wild events this week. Really smooth transitions. And great little recap on stats and standings at the end. Prefer this to other channel who try to capitalize on media-driven short attention span and post 1-2min, effortless videos just putting in a 30s hot take before asking ppl for "discussion". Your breakdowns are still the cream of the crop, but in a busy sport like this sometimes recaps are necessary. And this weekly series is a great way to do it. It seems to be a bit of everything. Being a referee myself, I do understand parts of it, what with not being able to see everything at once and things like that. But with the way some rulebooks are written ( Im assuming this to be the case for the NHL) everyone reads them differently, so the refs could very well be getting told to call similar situations different ways from higher ups based on how they decipher the rules

    I’m a lightning fan who went to watch the game in Dallas yesterday. What an absolute let down. I took some friends who have never been to a hockey game before, told them how great vasilevsky is *usually* and by the end of the game, couldn’t help but laugh as the stars piled goal after goal seemingly effortlessly into our net. It’s obviously not all his fault but he’s absolutely not back at 100% and the coaching staff should have seen that and made a change much earlier. I can’t help but think it’s a smaller hit to the ego to be benched than to have 6 scored on you in 2 periods, and then be benched anyway.

    I seem to remember hearing somewhere a long time ago someone in an interview said that players would intentionally turn their backs when going into the corner/boards with the intent to draw that penalty, regardless of the chance for injury. And while I may be an old dinosaur about this, but I am not much of a fan of these lanky speedsters everywhere that put themselves in positions to get hurt on account of their going too fast.

  • @joer8854

    @joer8854

    8 ай бұрын

    I disagree with the theory that hockey should be slow with no talent. I will say that right off. I hear that on a constant basis. However players turning their back when they see a hit coming is a big problem. Has been for a long time. Also playing until the whistle. Always play until the whistle, always. Stop trying to ref the game and play at the same time. You are the player, play the damn game and stop being the ref. If you are trying to be both, then you can do one of them better, so quit the team and be a ref or play hockey, not both.

    That preds/penguins game. Karlsson was holding/pulling the stick of R.ORiley trying to pull him offsides which causes him to collide into crosby. I think it was interference/holding on Karlsson before the interference on Crosby happened....so it was a good no call IMO.

  • @DarkLobster69

    @DarkLobster69

    7 ай бұрын

    Honestly, he’s trying to stay on-sides, and he has a reason to be where he is, which is a big determination for interference. It’s on both players to not collide, not just one, especially when a player is trying to make a play by being onsides. I agree it was a good no call.

    NHL officials are clearly selected based upon reverse IQ scores and poor visual acuity. I was straight blown away they gave Hathaway a major when everybody...including Luke's brother knew who to blame for the hit. ...the refs, predictably...failed to acknowledge any wrong doing. They can't see guys throwing sticks to intercept incoming passes, they don't know how icing works, they're clueless when plays are off sides, they don't know what justifies a penalty shot according to their own rules. Very low quality group of individuals.

    A few years ago , coming out of the League Governors meeting , the most talked about issue with the game was the officiating. The general consensus was inconsistency. That was a few years ago...Inconsistency still reigns supreme. Now the officials are making mistakes that are altering the outcome of games, Players are being injured . The League has to come up with some sort of grading and evaluation system to weed out the officials that aren't doing it right.

    When i was young and learning hockey we were taught how to properly take a hit. We were told what to do if we turn our backs or are coming in hot to avoid any major damage and use our padding to take the brunt of the hit and save ourselves. Torts is 100% correct. I feel like the newer generation hasnt learned how to properly take a hit or handle themselves appropriately when coming in hot on the boards. The amount of times ive seen players drop their heads into the boards/players, not using their shoulders, or not using their arms/hands to protect their head/face when getting slammed into the boards at all OR because they wanna hold their stick is insane to me. I was taught the puck is not worth your life, so use what ya got to help yourself. That was drilled into my head in AAA. You may lose but at least your alive to play again.

The Lightnings offense, been watching them a lot, is there but they lose focus or something on some games. Its almost like they're so talented they're forgetting the discipline. The problem wasn't at the goal, tho lotta love for Vas, the Lightning need some retooling and adjust their strategy to shift for different playstyles better. When you see the Ducks, love the Ducks but bad news bears team too often, spank the team that spanks TB...you know theres a more chesslike strategem missing in their tool kit. My 2 bits 😎

Something like 55 points in 75 games, dipping to like 15:00 TOI in NYR, and being a setup man for the Blackhawks as opposed to their primary goalscorer... For a guy that's 34 & undersized, that sounds like an impressive season to me, not to mention 6 Pts in the 7 Game series with the Rangers in April.

    Dallas going from that painful game against the flames to an 8-1 win over the Bolts was not something I had on my bingo card.

    Gotta say, I kind of agree with Torts as weird as that is. I grew up playing travel hockey in a small town and there were harder hits in those games than 80% of NHL regular season games now.

    Not a Cap fan or anything, but as a HOCKEY fan, I want to see him break the holy grail of NHL records (i.e. most goals in a career). I'm worried Ovi might crumble just before the finish line, robbing all of us of that special moment. The team around him isn't helping the situation. What's more important: 1 - Him staying until the end with the Caps but no record? OR 2 - Him moving elsewhere but breaking THE record? Obviously 1+ record, but eh. what about it Caps and hockey fans in general? IMHO I can't see him wear another jersey; so the GM should do everything to feed goals to Ovi.

    Torts is right, this is a problem as the NHL drafts younger and younger players who haven’t learnt the ‘art’ of hitting.
