    I've been a fan of your channel for a very very long time. Thank you for always making such amazing content. You have helped me appreciate the fantasy genre and it almost feels like you've been on my reading journey with me because of how much our taste in books lines up. I do have ulterior motives with this comment, though... I know you get recommended HunterxHunter all the time and you haven't gotten into it in the past, but I wanted to make another pitch to you. It suffers from some of the downsides of pantsing. Togashi clearly introduced some major story elements later (like the entire magic system) that should have been included in the start. That being said, if you can make it through the first major story arc, it is some of the best fiction ever created, with some of the most incredible characters to ever exist. This is coming from a guy who thinks Joe Abercombie is the GOAT because of how much I love characters. Some of the characters that emerge later in HunterxHunter will absolutely blow your mind. Not to mention, once the magic system gets introduced, I am certain you will be completely blown away at how well done, in depth, and just cool it is. It has a very slow and uninspired start, I get that. I typically do not read things that people say "You just have to get through the bad part!" In this case, it is absolutely worth it. I really think you'll end up being grateful you tried it out. Anyway, thanks again for all the lovely content you make!

  • @L_For_Literature

    @L_For_Literature

    The rest of your comment is fine, but a magic (system) doesn’t have to be introduced in the beginning. Builds more intrigue. To me at least. Magic shouldn’t be at the front of the story, even in manga, as characters, plot, etc. are much more important

  • @Whistrash

    Heya! :) Daniel! If you like the idea and find some time, I would love to see you do a video on 'writing style', if its a discussion or a tier list or just a rant :'D I am sooo interested in what you like to read in a fantasy book and overall perceive as a good fit for a modern book writing about fantasy, is it the 'whaddup dude' or 'sire, thy ass mirrors the sun, splendid' kinda stuff. ('too poetic', 'too modern', 'super old-school', 'sentences are unreadable', thou' thy', etc). Maybe you'd even give us some examples of what you like and not :) Have a wonderful end of the year! Really love your persona and content :)

    I'm fairly new to the 40k novels (I started playing the game a year ago), so I can't speak to most of them. But I can whole-heartedly reccomend The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath, specifically the audiobook narrated by Richard Reed. Two immortal robot skeletons start a feud over an ancient relic, leading to a millenia-long rivalry. No description I give would do it justice, but I implore you to look into it.

    Wow, you are reading Monster ha. I can say that its the only mystery thriller anime that takes place in 80s eastern Europe. Recently watched Pluto, you can give that one a shot, has the same mangaka. Between the two, I'd say I liked Pluto better. Probably the best first episode of anything I've ever watched. What an amazing hook.

    Hot take: How To Train Your Dragon 2 and 3 are both significant steps down from the first movie, and barely pass as average movies. Especially since the finale of the third movie undermines the themes of the first movie entirely.

    You might enjoy the old Warhammer Fantasy novels more so than 40k, purely because the universe is a bit more self-contained. In particular, I recommend the Gotrek and Felix book, partly because it incorporates the wider setting without inundating you with it and gives you a pretty entertaining duo to experience it through, alongside both its own cast and characters from the wider setting.

    I started reading Daniel Abraham The Dagger and the Coin series. Finish book 1 the Dragon Path now a ways through The Kings Blood. Very intriguing. The first I’ve read of him. Very political with pretty grey characters, and some POVs I have no clue where they are going. Reminds me a bit of A Feast For Crows. Have any of you read it? Also on book 3 of the Riyria Revelations, didn’t think I would enjoy it at first , kinda silly but now I’m waiting for some more character development of both Ryria characters. You get bits very very slowly. I keep hearing how great they are but very slow developing - Thanks for all your reviews. I’m trying to decide if I want to read 4th wing with my wife. She doesn’t do fantasy but wants to read that.

    Cyberpunk Edgerunners was so damn good, and I rate it similarly: some noticeable flaws, but overall consistently good and well put-together! Nothing has ever utterly bewildered me with its popularity like This is how you lose the time war. It was the only popular book I've read that I had to force myself to finish. It felt like it was building to something interesting, but the payoff was utterly toothless, and retroactively made the whole slow grind more painful.

    I feel like you might enjoy The Seep by Chana Porter. This unusual story about a an alien invasion where the aliens "infect" humans making everyone feel connected and allowing them to physically change themselves in ridiculous ways. The main story follows a trans woman whose partner has decided to use the Seep to become a baby again and restart life. The story is surreal, psychedelic even a little Horror-esque at points and a very interesting look at grief and moving on. There's a lot of other stuff as well, but it all breezes by at 200 pages.

    If you're still interested in Warhammer books I HIGHLY recommend the Night Lords trilogy by Aaron Demski-Bowden, it focuses on members of the traitorous 8th Legion of space marines as they careen around the galaxy bringing absolute chaos wherever they go. Somehow manages to be both grimdark but surprisingly funny, genuinely enjoyed it a lot, and the audiobooks are excellent

    i do not know if this book is even considered fantasy, but due to your thorough reading in the genre, i would recommend you The Grey House by Mariam Petrosyan an Armenian author. It is her only book that she wrote for 20 years and her last one as she confirmed. There is nothing to be described about the plot. But everything is peculiar and different regarding prose, character voice etc. I would love for this book to be aknowledged more than it is because i think it is one of a kind.

    A question for @DanielGreeneReviews (knowing full well this may not get a response) are these end-of-year tier lists in the context of OVERALL everything you've read/consumed? Or only out of the everything you've read for that year? Meaning: Is Black Sun an S-tier book in general/along with some of the best books you've ever read? Or just for the year 2023? If the latter, where would you rank it in your personal, all-time tier list?

    In that case, we can say that each Discworld book has its own complete story that can be read independently. But I think I understand what you mean. Going postal is more dynamic from the start than City Watch books or other series, and it can draw in a reader right away.
