The 2022 Lexus NX 350 Points Toward The Future

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2022 Lexus NX might not look significantly different than the first generation, but there are huge changes under the skin. There are four available powertrains, loads of new safety tech and the first application of the new Lexus Interface. That's right, the unloved trackpad is gone! And for the first time, the NX is available as a plug-in hybrid, the 450h+ that happens to be the most powerful model. All of these changes point to the direction Lexus is going. Tom Voelk travels to Phoenix, AZ to check out the most popular model, the NX 350 Luxury.

I used to think like you but then I realized…why would I need a spare tire when I live and drive in urban areas?! There are tons of repair shops and mechanics nearby around in case things go wrong with the tires or any parts for that matter. It’s not like you can go on an adventure bigger than a long road trip in this kind of suv anyway!

I agree no spare tire is a deal breaker, unless it's mostly a city car. I once had a severe damage flat about 200 km outside town, and it wasn't a fun experience to be towed (on a flatbed) all the way back to town for a run flat replacement. Never again!

Like so many models these days, you have to pay more up front to save any money on fuel costs. Typically, it means you have to drive most cars for years before you can accrue any real savings. High-end EVs are even worse. Hybrids are great for efficiency but they still are burdened with effectively two powertrains to power one car. We've come a long way but there is still a long way to go. This is a nice vehicle that will serve it's customers well even if it doesn't offer much for enthusiasts. Guess that's why they build the GR86. Anywho, another great review and the Red Light/Green Light summary is always perfect. So concise and informative!

It is an issue imo that the built in Nav. A) needs a subscription to function. B) needs data to function. It doesn't have a complete NA map on file and needs cell service. This means it functions no better than a cellphone (carplay/android auto). My old Honda had a DVD map system that would still work once cell service was no more. No preloading issues, turn it on and you have maps even if they are out of date.

Now, for a cross-country road-trip without any cell connection, you'd have to do some pre-planning...

Why are you comparing the NX with the GLA, X1 and Q3? The new NX is 183.5 inches long while those Germans are 175 to 177 inches long. The GLC is 183-186 inches, the X3 is 186 and the Q5 is 184. These are much better comparisons for the NX as they are much closer to its exterior dimensions.

The nx350 reallyshould have used the v6 out of the Camry. That would have done wonders for the nx and probably increased their sales even further. The turbo NX power wise is decent 275hp 317lbft torque but its still slower than a cx5 turbo with 2 less gears, Rdx, or Santa Fe turbo or even the old rav4 v6 with 3 less gears and 70lbft torque less... Tbh it doesn’t feel that much nicer than my Camry v6 XSE for instance and my Camry I think beats the nx in engine smoothness, power, quietness, and performance

In our testing, we beat the Lexus-estimated acceleration to 60 mph by a full half-second, hitting 60 in 5.5 seconds versus the quoted 6.0-second time. That's quicker than the other 2022 NX models we've tested, but a 2021 XC60 Recharge reaches 60 in a MotorTrend-tested 5.0 seconds. We haven't yet tested a Q5 plug-in, but Audi estimates its model to be just as quick as the Volvo. In case you wonder, the lighter-weight RAV4 Prime matches the NX450h+'s 5.5-second time to 60. This means the NX plug-in hybrid is both the quickest NX money can buy and the slowest SUV in its tiny segment. Remember, though, that the Lexus provides a better balance of EV driving range and acceleration than the Audi and Volvo. On the road, the NX450h+ feels quick despite its as-tested 4,444-pound heft. Multiple MotorTrend editors felt the NX450h+ had better suspension tuning than the NX350 and NX350h we also drove. The NX450h+ rides with more stability than its siblings, and it feels like it is the best balanced and best damped among the 350 and 450-badged NX models. Just don't expect the agility of a Genesis GV70 or Alfa Romeo Stelvio. On our figure-eight course-a MotorTrend test that evaluates acceleration, braking, handling, and the transitions in between-the NX450h+'s performance doesn't reflect the way it feels in the real world. The plug-in finished the test in 28.4 seconds at 0.57 g (average), well behind the quicker Volvo's 26.3 seconds at 0.69 g but also behind the RAV4 Prime (27.0 seconds at 0.65 g) and the NX350h. That NX hybrid variant is nearly 400 pounds lighter than the NX450h+ and finishes the figure-eight course quicker, at 28.0 seconds at 0.59 g. Motor Trend

The door “assist” seems like it would be a annoying if you’re in a big city parked on a main street where there is always traffic going by. I could understand it for back doors for kids but unnecessary for the driver.

Not sure if it can be defeated in the menu. If you hold the button for three seconds, the function is overridden. If nothing else it makes people more cautious and helps to protect cyclists. I know people that have doors opened on them, not good. And I know someone whose door was ripped off by another car when they opened it in traffic, just after finishing their driver's test. Seriously.

bad choice on the run flats. I'd rather loose a little space in the lower part of the back and have a spare... plus with summer tires quieter cabin. I could live with the stitching being absent on the dash though I don't understand their reasoning behind that decision, especially considering competition's interior looks much better. with so many luxury compact suv's on the market now Lexus can't afford to give up an inch. Lexus got the reputation but look at what Koreans are doing. they are straight up going after the Germans and getting lot of things right. Having said all that though, really like the new NX. I'm very much interested in the NX 350 F sport model. exterior looks awesome, especially the front.

Lexus shouldn’t have any problem selling these, they will probably sell tons. However overall Toyota as a company is getting old and lagging behind. If I wanted performance, I go with German. If I wanted tech or even resale value, I will go with Tesla. If I wanted design, I will go with Korean. Only thing left for Lexus is reliability, but other companies are catching up. And younger buyers with disposable income are not buying Lexus. Average buyer age for Lexus has been 53 for years.

So some good questions need to be asked if buying. NX 450h+ or RX 450h with V6 for less $? . The plugin is much more expensive than the RX. It's over $6000 + more by my calculations, and by the time you add ML and packages... Which one of the 2 is more refined, quieter, luxurious? All of the infotainment that people make a big deal about to me is just smoke and mirrors. No matter how advanced or fancy they may seem today, in a few years, they become old news. They are nice to have, but they are not what I'm looking for as my priorities. I want quality, reliability, refinement, great sound system. Once I am driving, I am not going gaga over some fancy schmancy iphone gimmicks. The driving experience and feel, you will always have. I currently own a 2019 GS350f Sport with a triple beam and ML system. It's both fun to drive and refined, and the ML system is incredible. And I have the peace of mind that it won't be a pile of junk in 5 years.

Sure, and at the end of five years has a thirty percent residual, fifty six percent on the Lexus. On upper trims in Canada this is over ten thousand dollars. So with a price saving on purchase of $1700.00, still makes the GV70 much more money (not including the the extra for lower fuel economy) on ownership. Genesis styling I agree is top of market right now and think their power train options are better for fun driving.

Look for this to challenge the RX for best selling status at Lexus until the new RX arrives.
