    I've got this bike in a 29er. Its tremendous fun. Its the first bike I've had in decades, and my first mountain bike. It could be my lack of experience, but it feels very fast to me. After riding it for a little over 100 miles, I think I'd be cautious about upgrades. I could see improving the stock tires, but dropping more money on a fork and drivetrain seems like it would be better placed in savings for a more substantial overall bike in a few years. Don't get me wrong, its really good starter.

    Thanks for sharing and congrats on the bike. Glad you are enjoying it! Yeah, most of our customers do leave it stock and you will be fine leaving it stock. We do have some customers that do like to upgrade right away and so that is why we are going to do some upgrades so they can know their options. If the rain will finally stop falling in Houston, I can go film the upgrade! Take care

    I just bought this exact bike on sale for €499. I already have an Advent X on my old bike, will be swapping that over. I bought the Marin for the more modern geo, longer fork travel, mainly for the frame really. On my old 27.5 bike I have the 100mm Epixon so will be getting the same probably but will adjust to 130mm. • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment and glad you are looking to get into MTB! Both great bikes for a beginner. The Rockhopper has 9 speeds vs the 8 speed on the bobcat 3. Brakes are the same, both frames have routing for a dropper post (if you ever wanted to add one). The geometry is a bit different. The Rockhopper is more steep (68 degrees vs 67 on the bobcat). This will mean the bobcat will feel a bit more stable going down hill. Forks are basically the same but the bobcat has an extra 20mm of travel (may not matter to you but a difference). You can’t go wrong with either honestly and may come down to color. I would also though consider the Bobcat 4 model. It costs $100 more but comes with a 1x9 Microshift Advent clutch derailleur which is better and makes shifting a lot easier. We do a lot of 1x drivetrain conversions and it is a popular upgrade. You could always do it later to the Bobcat 3 (or the rockhopper) but you’ll end up paying more. Just something to consider. Good luck!

From what I've come across, this seems to be the best bang for the buck for someone looking to get into the sport. Here's to keeping my fingers crossed I can find a gently used one or they come down in price 🤙

    Hi seen a few questions about comparing bikes, what do you think about the rocky mountain fusion 10 vs the bobcat? RM is maybe more aggressive with the 66* head tube? Not sure if that makes a difference in real life.

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    Looks like the RM Fusion 10 is a solid bike and would compare more with the Bobcat 4 (2022 version). Drivetrain is basically the same, yes the head tube is a bit more slack on the Rocky but it also only has 100mm of travel in the fork (Bobcat has 120). Just a difference, not necessarily good or bad. I will say the Fusion comes with 4100 shimano brakes it looks like which are much better than the Tektros that come on the Bobcat in my opinion. I’d say either bike will be a lot of fun and may just come down to color and availability. Good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the comment. Yeah that is a popular comparison among our customers. Bobcat is more Trail/XC with 67.5 headtube angle, straight head tube, lighter. San Quentin is more aggressive with beefier frame, tapered head tube (so stiffer), and more aggressive angle (65). If you are in to more downhill and jumping, go San Quentin. Normal trail riding/xc riding, go bobcat.

  • @BikingRoots

    Good question. If you’re comparing to the Bobcat 3, then the Comp would be a better buy however the Bobcat 4 is almost identical to the comp as far as specs although the comp has better hydraulic brakes in my opinion. I think I prefer the geometry on the bobcat over the comp (a bit slacker and less up right). Either one though would make a great beginner trail bike. May come down to price or color. Good luck!

I m 42 years with a history of disc herniation and wanna use a bike to commute a few days a week and to drive through farms n through rural mud roads n stuff. Right now there is a waiting period of few months for Trek bikes. What would you suggest I opt for being a beginner? Thank you.

  • @BikingRoots

    Thanks for the comment and sorry for the delay. Bobcat 3 is very similar to the Trek Marlin 6 while the Marlin 5 is more like a Bolinas Ridge. I’d go for a Bobcat 3 or Marlin 6 and since you have to wait a few months for Treks, if you can find a Marin, sooner I’d go that route. I think you’d be happy with the Bobcat 3 for what it looks like you are needing it for

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello! Thanks for your comment and question. Good question and good comparison. Personally I’d go for the Bobcat (or Wildcat 3 which is the women’s version if she wants a little lower top tube) mainly because the frame has a cleaner look with more cables internally routed and a more slack frame design. 67.5 vs 69 degree head tube angle. If you live somewhere where you have more steep sections, the bobcat/wildcat will feel more confident going down hill than the polygon just due to the nature of the frame design since the polygon is more XC and bobcat/wildcat a bit more trail oriented if that makes sense. Drivetrain and components are basically the same so no advantage/disadvantage there. Sometimes it also just comes down to color and availability! Hope that helps and good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the question. We did another video a year or so ago comparing the 3 at the shop (if that helps). In summary though, unless you are in love with one of the bobcat 3 colors, I'd go to the 4. Everything is identical basically minus the drivetrain. So for $100 you get a 1x9 drivetrain with a clutch derailleur... so single chain ring up front, big cassette in the back. This will lighten up your bike a bit, make shifting easier, and be quieter and stronger if you intend on using it a good amount off road. Good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. You’d be fine on the Polygon but for me (maybe because I’ve ridden them and sell them) but I prefer the Bobcat. The frame is nicer and has internal cable routing and the head tube angle is more slack so more comfortable and stable when going down hills if that’s important to you. Another deciding factory also may be that with the Bobcat you can probably find a dealer and go try one out while Polygon is just sold online to my knowledge so more challenging to size and also to potentially get service after the fact if you have some warranty issue down the road. Just some things to think about. Good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    3 жыл бұрын

    If you can afford the up front cost with the Recon, then I would do that over the Judy since the Recon is stiffer with bigger stanchions and can handle more abuse which the San Quentin is kind of designed for. Don’t forget you’ll need to also upgrade the headset as the stock San Quentin 1 comes with a straight steerer fork with a 1.5” reducer to 1 1/8 lower bearing and race. Good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    Thanks for your questions and a good question at that. We just did one of these a few weeks ago and I’m pretty sure we got it flush (or at least close). It was on a med 27.5 bobcat 3. What size is your bike? We used the PNW Ranier Gen 3 which has a very short insertion depth and then a travel adjustment option so you can get it at the right height. It allows 30mm of adjustment (in 5mm increments) so I’d order the 150mm version, then adjust it down to 130mm. Good luck!

    @@BikingRoots Thanks for the reply, I ride a large frame 29er. I've come from a 27.5 and I'm shocked at how poised and agile the Bobcat is. I was expecting 29ers to feel more unwieldy, but I'm managing to throw it around as well as my old bike. I'm planning to put a dropper on it and upgrade to a 1-12 groupset, although they are proving difficult and expensive to source in the UK. Could you recommend a model for me to hunt for snappier and more responsive shifting ?

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@garystorey As far as a 12 speed groupset, your best bet is probably going with SRAM NX Eagle which would allow you to use your existing rear wheel. If you’re open to less gears, there are 8, 9, and 10 speed options from Microshift that are an inexpensive option and work well. Sometimes you can also find some older Shimano 10 speed systems (with clutches) that could give you some better performance.

    Good question. Depends honestly how big you are. 780 bars are shipped with all of them despite their size knowing that people will cut for their personal size and riding area and style. I personally like 760 or 780 bar, some people like a shorter cut. My wife likes 720 bars. I usually recommend trying it for a couple weeks if it feels to wide or you are clipping trees in narrow singletrack, cut 10mm off each side and see how it feels after that. You can always cut more, but can’t put more on!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for your comments and question and glad you are wanting to upgrade form the hybrid. Hybrids are fine for certain people but it sounds like you need something more off road focused. Regarding going in that much mud, the bottom brackets are sealed but can still get dirt in there. Sometimes the noises you hear may not be in the bottom bracket, but other parts of the drivetrain like the crankset. Either way, a wildcat or a marlin are tougher bikes overall but even high end bikes don’t like to be buried in mud so I’d say that won’t change much upgrading. What will change though is having a bike with more traction, suspension, better brakes (hydraulic) and better geometry. Difference between the Marlin and the Wildcat: In my opinion the frame on the Wildcat feels and is built better than the Marlins I’ve seen. The gloss fit and finish just feels higher quality than the matte finish on the Marlins. The Wildcats also have a dropper post routing IF you ever wanted to add one (if not don’t worry about that). The components on both however are the same. Main differences come with the frame geometry as the Marlin is more upright for cross country use and the wildcat is more of a trail bike so may feel a bit more confident going down hills. Either brand I think will give you an upgrade so may come down to color and/or availability. Good luck!

As far as a beginner bike, yes the Bobcat is a great bike and have had a lot of customers do more jumps and extreme things then I would do on it without any frame issues. Upgrades it is good up to a point. I would say drivetrain, fork, brakes, not too difficult. • @BikingRoots

    sorry for the super late reply. So bolinas has a shorter freehub body that the cassette mounts to which limits the options of cassettes you can install. Sunrace makes an 11 speed cassette that will work with it but still tracking down a model number for it. Shimano cassettes work but only 7 speed, not 8-12. You can buy a different rear wheel if you are set on modifying the drivetrain (one that comes with a bit longer freehub body). Hope that makes sense. Sorry it gets confusing sometimes!

    Sorry for the delay, we’ve been super busy moving to a new shop and the holidays. I’m not familiar with the Silverback stride but looking at some specs online assuming I was looking at the right one, shows it to be a pretty nice build. It would compare more with the new Marin Bobcat Trail 4 which also has a 1x drivetrain. Brakes are the same, geometry is very similar. The only thing I didn’t see was if it has routing for an internal dropper post (which the Marins have). That may not matter to you and you could always just do an external one but since the rest of the bike is internal, it could look a bit off. Just something to find out or think about. Good luck!

    Kent trouvaille vs the bobcat 3?

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    Жыл бұрын

    sorry for the delayed response. Good question. I haven’t looked too into the Kent, assuming it has double wall wheels, then it isn’t a bad option IF you fit on it properly. I believe it comes in only 1 size? Usually common with these types of bikes which if you fit in that most common size, you’re good, but for others it stinks when you buy and ride a bike that doesn’t fit you. I like that it has a 1x9 drivetrain which the bobcat 3 obviously does not. The brakes are better on the bobcat though since you get hydraulics, the mechanicals on the Kent are probably pretty bad (if they’re like a lot of cheap ones I see). Marin gives you a lifetime frame warranty which is another plus and from some retailers (which I hate to mention since it undermines my business), are on sale for like $550 right now!

    I got the Bobcat 4 for $649 right before the pandemic bike shortage. My wife got the Bobcat 5. My recommendation to anyone looking into them is to get either the Bobcat 3 or the Bobcat 5 - stay away from the Bobcat 4. The 3 and 4 will eventually take the same amount of money to upgrade, so with the 3 you'll be starting with a smaller initial investment. If you can afford it (and find it) the Bobcat 5 out of the box is a great bike.

    Thanks for your comment, that’s sweet you got them before the pandemic. We’ve been waiting for 5s to arrive for a year! Maybe the 2022s will finally show up. Speaking of 2022, Marin is supposed to make some changes to the 4 which will make it a better buy for a lot of people. Yes I agree though, unless it’s a color preference, get the 3 or the 5. My only issue with the 5 is upgrading the fork due to the thru axle front hub. It’s tough to find a straight steerer 100mm thru axle air fork.

  • @UnPolacoLoco

    @UnPolacoLoco

    @@BikingRoots that sounds good for the 4! It’s just in this awkward middle ground right now. True with the fork on the 5. So the idea is for my wife to ride it out for as long as possible (for the riding she does, we’re not clamoring to upgrade) and then look for a XFusion Enix and a front QR wheel.

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    3 жыл бұрын

    Much better than 2021 Marlin 5. 2022 is almost the same component wise. A couple differences IF they are important to you are that the Bobcat 3 has a 120mm of travel vs 100 on the Marlin, Bobcat 3 has wider handlebars 780 vs 720. So small differences. The biggest difference is in the geometry of the two frames. The Bobcat 3 has shorter chain stays and a slacker headtube angle by 2 degrees so more of a trail bike and more confident going down hills. The Marlin 5 is steeper so you will be more upright and over the front wheel which some may want while others do not want. Can’t go wrong with either depending on what’s important to you and/or in stock. Good luck!

  • @BikingRoots

    @BikingRoots

    3 жыл бұрын

    That’s a good bike to compare. Polygon makes some very competitive bikes and you can’t go wrong with either Marin or Polygon in my opinion. At $799, you are $100 more for the Polygon. The frame and most of the components look identical with fork (same), brakes (same). One of the only differences I see is a 10 speed rear drivetrain vs the 8 speed on the Bobcat 3 (Bobcat 4 is 9 speed). The 10 speed has more range but you still have a front derailleur so not a big advantage there. Out of the box if you just want 10 speeds, don’t mind the extra $100 for that, then get it. If you are planning on upgrading to a 1x soon after, then I’d rather put the $100 towards a 1x8 or 1x9 drivetrain setup (with a clutch derailleur). With the polygon you’ll still need to upgrade the crankset, if you can find a 10 speed derailleur with a clutch, you could reuse the chain and the rear cassette. Hope it helps. Good luck!
