    The irony is that this Prius is faster than the average car in Europe...I'm from The Netherlands, west-europe and the majority of people have a car that is either SLOWER than a regular Prius or at best just as fast. People tend to always buy the most base-model a car has to offer. People drive lots of Volkswagen cars. The most popular from the past 3-4 years is the Volkswagen Polo (75-90HP), followed by the Golf (90-110HP). Another popular car is the Opel Corsa (90HP). The average BMW 1/2-series comes with 100-110HP. But the BMW's are a lot more expensive than a Prius. Now think about it, the Prius taking the lead from a red traffic light, ha! Welcome to Europe ;)

    I think that is output for just the engine. It uses the 2ZR-FXE which is good for 98 hp and 142 Nm torque (105 lb-ft). The two motors in the drive system (MG1 and MG2) are capable of 23kW and 40Nm and 53kW and 163 Nm. But of course, these can be blended to any amount with the planetary drive system. The prime can generate about 68 kW (91hp) when running just the motors. Still pretty torque-lite of course! but perhaps not as straightforward as the spec sheet might suggest.

    As was already mentioned, there is a fair amount of torque provided my MG2 (which isn't shown in the spec sheets for some reason). I drove a Prius for 7 years and in rain/snow, the wheels would easily break free if the traction control was disabled. And torque from MG2 is available at 0 RPM.

    We bought a 2017 Prius Prime Advanced and love it. I agree completely with the confusing selection of drive modes. We usually just keep it in EV Mode all the time. I don't care for the chrome on the front dash because of glare. The screen is hard to see with glare. Toyota should have a way of keeping track of ICE miles so that oil change interval would make more sense. We find it to be way more quiet and physically more comfortable than our other Prius which is a 2010. One thing I really wish for would be a 100 mile EV only range. 25 is not enough. If it had 100 miles then Toyota would own the EV market.

    Totally agree on extending the EV range. Not everyone has a short commute to work. With a longer EV range everyone that has a long commute in a cold climate would buy one where regular EVs just don't have the range.

    The problem with the Hyundai plug-in hybrids is: They depend on the gas engine for all heating. So here in Canada, for 5 or so months per year, you're operating a normal hybrid - the pure electric range (that you'd buy a plugin _for)_ is unuseable, unless you're willing to drive frozen. So the total cost of year 'round ownership (and hydrocarbons burned) ends up being considerably lower on the Prime. Plus, Prius's are known to be one of the most reliable, long-lasting cars you can buy, no matter the price.

  • @osimmac

    7:48 its for down hill, if the battery is full it just enables engine breaking, thats all. without it enabled, if you go downhill, and the battery fills, you will start to coast and speedup because hybrids are designed to not engine brake.

I used to have a Subaru Legacy GT, so the power loss was the biggest thing to get used to, but my gas bill made up for it. If you press the "TRIP" button on the left side of the steering wheel (opposite of the heated steering wheel button, in a mirrored spot of the "MODE" button), it will cycle through a few things including the gas mileage and electric mileage. Brand new Prius Prime owner here after having watched your previous video two dozen times! I prefer this guy to the Ioniq: I figured a Toyota would take a beating for the next 10 years whilst being economical and environmental. It feels roomier up front than the Ioniq and has slightly less cabin noise on the highway. It also never needs to run the engine in the winter (driving as an EV), whereas the Ioniq idles the engine for heat despite having a full charge.

This is where the Prime has the advantage, as it can run the heater with battery power alone, which means all year long you can run all electric for commuting, vs half the year with the Ionic.

The piano black is a drag but I’m a clean freak so it’ll be cleaned daily LOL. The color is awesome but I would have to go with one the lighter color interiors, black gets old sometimes and very dark especially when you tint the windows.

    I have had my Prius for 16 years with over 275,000 miles. Best car for driving in L.A. traffic 50 miles a day. Want to up the efficiency but not go full EV so I waited for the Prius Prime and was disappointed with numerous things so I was leaning heavily to the 2nd gen Ioniq PHEV until I saw and read about the Toyota RAV4 Prime. The RAV4 Prime will be my next car. It checks all the boxes. Supposed to come out this Summer in the USA. Look forward to you guys test driving it. Thanks.

    Alright flame suit on: I actually liked my Gen 4 Prius, my biggest regret was not getting a Prius Prime because that tiny 1-2mi EV range of the regular hybrid sucks lol. The Prius is the perfect appliance for an efficient reliable commuter, and Toyota's target with these are not car enthusiasts. With that being said, the TNGA platform is actually pretty well sorted! My Prius took corners flatter than some of the econo-cars I've driven in same price area/size. Like I didn't expect somewhat competent handling in a Prius of all cars!. Also, despite it handling pretty decent it IS slow as shit lol. I ended up paying it off and giving it to my brother who needed a newer car and just wants a reliable A-B car. I actually ended up buying a Mk7.5 GTI thanks to the Straight Pipes! I didn't know they had refreshed the GTI until I saw their video. Yuri, sadly, the current standard Prius also got a slight refresh! It doesn't have that long "Z" looking taillight anymore.

    Unpopular opinion, I use Apple Maps because I like that it tells me the best lane to be in in order to get to my destination efficiently and it also factors the speed limit into eta and it shows stop signs and stop lights on the map and says at the next light rather than in 100 feet. More convenient for me personally in carplay

    I bought a 2020 Prius Prime Limited and I love it. For the haters this is my third Prius--- I had a Lexus SC400 as my midlifecrisismobile but as an adult I don't need a sports car for a daily driver; ymmv. Anyway, just a couple notes: I really hate the lack of Android Auto as well, but that's my sole gripe. I considered the Hyundai Ioniq but found it too drab to get excited about, and the Honda Clarity has longer EV range but inferior gas mode mileage. For my needs I basically won't use gas in my Prime unless I leave town which would have been true of any plug-in hybrid I could have bought. Oh, and that constant reverse beep is the worst! The dealer can change it to a single beep--- if they give you any runaround (my awful dealership did) it's in the owner's manual under dealer-adjustable options.

    There's two ways to get the DTE for the electric portion - in the instrument panel by pressing the TRIP button to cycle through (odo, Trip A/B, Since Start, DTE, OFF) or on the HUD. Well I guess there's a 3rd way but it's more convoluted to change - it basically swaps the % left in the top left hand corner of the right hand multi-info display with the DTE.

    In the older Priuses there was a way to disable it pretty easily. I think in the 4th gen you either have to take it to the dealer or as the other person mentioned use carista or some other scan tool. I have no idea why they put these in the cars. But they've been doing it since 1997 and they still do it. I imagine the reason is that the car is silent a lot of the time especially at slow speeds. And it is theoretically possible that you could pull into a parking space put it in reverse forget that you did so open the door and start to get out and the car could run over you. But honestly what they need to do is just have it beep two or three times in a row and then shut the hell up.

  • @Henry_Jr_Watsson

    @Henry_Jr_Watsson

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@kens97sto171 I drive an Hybrid myself and it too makes the beeping-noise when in reverse. I understand why. The car is silent. So silent that it's easy to think that the car is off as it simply makes zero noise. There are too many scenarios in which it could go wrong if you'd had no annoying beeping sound. It prevented me a few times from giving gass while in reverse!

  • @kens97sto171

    @kens97sto171

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@Henry_Jr_Watsson Yeah I turned the beeping off as soon as I could, on the second gen Priuses it's a pretty easy thing to do. There are videos on KZread showing you how to do it, it's of course reversible also. I never had a single situation where I didn't realize it was still in reverse. And I think the better solution would be for it to beep two or three times quickly in a row and then stop. I believe on the newer Priuses when you disable it that is exactly what they defer to is a single beep or several beeps in a row. You should keep in mind that I drive for a living 50k per year , and I drove an 18-wheeler for a hell of a long time. So I am perhaps a little more observant than your average casual driver. 15 years no tickets no accidents, probably 3 million miles.. If I can keep track of all the stuff I needed to remember to drive an 18-wheeler, remembering to put my Prius in park is not really an issue lol.. They're definitely awesome cars, a bit boring to drive. But super reliable, practical and comfortable. Pretty much the perfect car if you drive 50,000 mi a year. Hope you have a wonderful day and drive safe.
