After discontinuing the #OutbackXT about 10 years ago, #Subaru is reviving the #XT name for 2020 and under the hood, you'll find the most powerful #turbocharged engine in the #Outback ever. Borrowed from the Ascent, this 2.4L boxer 4-cylinder offers up 260 HP and 277 lb-ft of torque in a car that is about 400 pounds lighter over the Ascent. Towing capacity improves to 3,500 pounds and fuel economy also gets a much needed boost over the old H-6 and 2008 Outback XT Limited to 23/30 MPG. Along with the new Subaru Global Platform, the 2020 Outback is the safest, stiffest, and most tech forward Outback the company has ever made. It should continue to be the best-selling model in the Subaru portfolio when it goes on sale in August 2019.

    What about the auto stop/ start, was it obtrusive and is it fully defeated in the menu system, or does it reset each time, without a physical button that would be a pain if you didnt want it on.

    I used to hate CVTs, but after having the last gen (2018) Outback as a rental for 3 weeks, I was pleasantly surprised by the Subaru's responsiveness and also fairly decent simulated shifts during moderate to high throttle. Compared to the Nissan rentals I usually end up with, the eagerness of the Subaru CVT was good enough to make me stop universally hating these transmissions. Even with the modest base engine, it was completely tolerable - So good that I'm confident any non car enthusiast would have no idea it isn't a regular automatic.

    I agree, Subaru (and Honda I’d say as well) do an excellent job with their cvt’s. Nissan cvt’s sadly remain laggy gear hunters and they don’t even seem to care all that much.

  • @97I30T

    @97I30T

    Kevin Andrew Subaru, Honda, and Toyota actually make decent CVTs that behave nice enough to make people think they’re normal automatics. Every Nissan I’ve driven with a CVT has been pure trash. They’re rubber bandy, noisy, refuse to accelerate smoothly, and unrefined. I’ve come to the conclusion that Nissan is just bad at CVTs. They really ought to give up and go back to normal automatics because they can’t seem to get CVTs right.

  • @kevinandrew_

    @kevinandrew_

    @@97I30T Agree completely. It's extra ironic because Nissan was the first to widely adopt them, so you'd think they would have worked out all the kinks and "unnatural" responses by now. Instead, they've been left behind. Mitsu's is probably the only other bad one I've driven, but it's harder to give Nissan a pass because of how big of an automaker they are.

    I'd agree with your comment as well. I've driven some early model Honda's with CVTs and wasn't a fan, but after driving a Forester recently I was pleasantly surprised. I'm currently in a Golf R atm (and the DSG is definitely a love/hate affair) and am certainly considering this as my next car.

    over me Got a 2019 Crosstrek Sport and can’t wait for the lease to end. Got a long list of stuff that i don’t like about it that will make me look somewhere else next time. Can’t believe I got myself in leasing this dull and noisy, bad ventilation (passengers freeze their feets in the back seat) in winter small crossover. Piss poor ventilation design for winter 0c all the down to -20C as tout your back passengers will freeze their feet. If you put vent for the feet/windshield then your windows become foggy due to lack of air circulation. so you will end up with the air fan in high speed yet to much avail. On colder days -15C and below , heating is insufficient for even cold temperatures. After a highway ride of close to 25 minutes with an exterior temp of -22C/-33C with wind chill, heat was almost absent inside the cabin. I knew that i was getting 140 HPs less than my previous vehicle with the Crosstrek but this engine is so noisy!!! You wake up the neighborhood when starting it at 5am , it’s even worst that it revs high for a long time (blue thermometer only turns off when CVT is warm which is never). After 10 minutes on the highway engine stills revs pretty high (way above 2.3K/RPMs) then it lowers into the 1.7K/RPM. CVT is sluggish and the car feels like it’s constipated or depleted of power when CVT is still cold. OEM tires kills the mood on the car on the highway, as soon as i installed my winter tires interior noise when down more than a couple of decibels. To resume: will never buy another subie in the future.

    I had a Forester XT 2004. Ride quality, handling and acceleration were excellent. Car was made in Japan. Maintained the car as per the service manual. Was never in any accident. Had the following issues over the years: - Alternator replaced 3 times - A/C Condenser replaced - Sun roof stopped working, had the dealership just lock it shut as the repair would cost CAD 1,000 - Driver side mirror stopped moving in horizontal directions - Driver side power window mechanism needed to be replaced - Intermittent water leakage from lift gate near the top, never resolved - Driver side seat heating stopped working on high setting - Trim on driver side A pillar fell and couldn't be reattached as the plastic pins were broken - Passenger side window seemed to develop a small gap causing unbearable wind noise - In 2018, turbo showed signs of imminent failure and check engine light indicated gas leakage traced to somewhere in the fuel filler pipe Repair estimate for the last two items was CAD 4,000. So I just donated the car to charity. They sold it for scrap for CAD 300 in 2018. Total mileage was 250K Kms.

    An excellent video, and thanks! My only real gripe is that comparisons keep being made between an Outback, or Subaru in general, and "a Jeep." That's not a comparison, and I get that he's referring to going offroad (even light-duty), but far better to compare to OTHER crossovers that this is marketed against: RAV 4, CR-V, etc. Otherwise, I'd just as easily say "it's not a Jeep: look at how much cheaper it is" or "Look how much better gas mileage it gets," or, "Look how it doesn't roll over and kill everyone inside in a collision..."

    Sofyen - very nice review, as usual. Looking very hard at ordering a '20 Limited XT. If you remember from your testing last July: what do you think of, 1) The Subaru infotainment system overall, and, 2) The Outback's Start/Stop system (I hear it's pretty rough).

    I would like to see/hear your comparisons of the new Outback vs the Buick TourX. I am wagon nut and would prefer to replace my boring crossover with a wagon. Need AWD for snow(upstate NY) but no offroading for me. The Buick just looks huge and more like a Volvo(hello Opel). How does the Subaru compare driving wise? Comfort? I'm cross shopping the two wagons.

IMO for its time it was probably the best road trip car for a reasonable price. But some idiot thought the oil filter should be behind the passenger side wheel, You had to take the wheel off to remove the filter.

    Thank you for your video time stamps. I’m very satisfied with the 260 hp XT trim power bump, but the Subaru as tested price tag is still a big sucker punch to the wallet and heart. Like I’ve said before, many optioned out Subaru’s seemingly have an epidemic of grossly inflated price tags with full options but they do offset the price with their strong resale value and solid standard features. It’s great to see the Subaru Turbocharged 4 cylinder being brought back to let 6 cylinders out there know who’s boss.
