FYI. If you don’t want any delay when taking off, simply put the car in S mode for the transmission. The transmission will still shift automatically, but it will be much more responsive than leaving it in “D.” This works the same with Audi products as well.

As to BMW longevity, I have had several BMW's run beyond 200,000 miles. I had a 2006 325xi, and it was running well at 205,000 miles until a deer ran into it. I currently have a 2015 BMWi xDrive, which is about to hit 200,000 miles. I have been the only owner of that car and it still runs like it did when it was new.

When Sofyan mentioned the additional logo on the D pillar reminding people that its a BMW not to be mistaken as a Hyundai or Kia product --- as a Kia Stinger owner, that was actually great to hear lol.

There is a way to fold in the side mirrors. On the door handle press and hold the lock button for about 5 seconds then they will fold in. Same goes for the key fob.

I think the X2 is quite sharp though I prefer the base model with black on rocker panels and chrome trim around windows. As to the BMW badge on C pillar, I like it as it harks back to the days of the old BMW CS coupes that had those badges on C pillars. There is a style precedent for this. BMW didn't just pull it out of it's ___.

Thanks for this review. In part because of this review, I recently replaced my beloved 2007 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro Sportback with a 2022 BMW X2 M35i. I agonized over what car to replace my A3 with, since Audi does not make a Quattro hatchback anymore. Super happy with my decision. This thing is f#%&Ing fast! The ride quality is exceptional, and the interior is super nice. Although I can tell it sits a little higher than my A3, when you put the suspension in sport mode, I can take it on the twisties pretty much as fast as my A3.

FYI, the instrument cluster isn’t digital. The speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge are analog gauges. They do sorta look digital because they’re behind a black panel, but they’re physical gauges. Also, the X2’s heated steering wheel switch is on the side of the steering column, not the front of the steering wheel like some BMWs. One thing I hate about the X2 backup camera is that the video delay is very noticeable. I’m personally very disappointed with our X2. It drives great and we get lots of compliments on its look. It’s also very functional and we have four people for road trips without issue. However, the relationship between the seats, door opening, and instrument panel is weird. After over a year of owning the vehicle, neither of us have been able to find the “right” seating position. And then the seatbelt isn’t height administrable and is mounted super high in the car. It constantly rubs against our necks.

Finally someone makes a mini-crossover with a half capable engine

Radio/track skip is handled by the right scroll wheel on the steering wheel. Scroll up and select for next track. Scroll down and select for previous track. Also allowed you to scroll radio stations.

For some people the BMW badge is the reason they buy the car. Two extra badges means they get 2x the value

XxklusivV Gaming, X1 and X2 are the same. Have you seen an X3/X4, X5, or 5 Series lately? None share the same interior.

I’m not a big car guy, but I really lust after this car!

The mirror folds when you lock the car and either long press the lock in button on the key fob or long touch the ridged area on the keyless access door handle.

It doesn't snow a lot in the DC area in the Fall. In fact, it's extremely rare for it to snow here in the Fall. . It does rain infrequently here. Also, don't use a rag to wipe down your car. Or do what he did. You will scratch up your car. There are better sources of information for detailing.

Lost me with front wheel drive BMW. Unfortunately few new BMWs are “The Ultimate Driving Machine” I’ll keep my 1998 318Ti It’s a hatchback and 4 cylinder with Dinan performance upgrades. And it’s a great back road barn burner an absolute blast to drive hard.

vnq , Try the BMW car club website, BMWCCA classifieds. You don’t have to join to view them, but they are on a delayed basis for non-members. Low miles that’s going to be tough to find, but 318Ti’s do come up. Also consider the 318i, 325i and 328i late 80s through the 90s. My mechanic is always trying to buy mine. He says BMW inline 4 and 6 cylinder where pretty bulletproof during that period. I can’t disagree maintenance has been basic, nothing major. I also had a 1991 M5 that was an awesome drive, but more expensive to maintain and modify. Be careful with the BMW M cars though they are often driven hard and maintenance is very critical with them. BMW wants this vehicle to be referred to as a “Sport Activity Coupe”. A SAC. Yeah.

you got some surprising prejudices: about women taste. Or maybe my wife has a strange taste and you are right. My wife said no to the X3, as too large and practical. For boring men, she said. She said yes to this car (and we bought it), as it is smaller (easier parking), but higher than hot hatches (she is 70 years old, but still a petrol head). She loved your comments about the noise, as she has been spoiled over ten years while we drove a V8 (atmospheric) M3. Still today she loved the precision steering, the gorgeous noise, including when jamming the doors). She also loves good sound of the engine, and accepts a firm ride if this brings great ride. So we got this car; we mainly drive it on bad roads, but we love it. Normally we both select the sport mode. So, maybe you should re-discuss these issues with women, including grandmas who love sport and speed. I agreed too, as I do have some problems with my back to enter and exit a car (several injuries from motorcycle and alpine ski racing accidents). So we had to sell our gorgeous M3 and get a SUV, that doesn't make me looking like a boring man :)

Excellent job as always. Two thumbs up! I'm ready for a new vehicle and have narrowed it down to the 2020 X2 M35i and the 2020 John Cooper Works. Your honest opinion would be great. Regular every day driving with some road trips thrown in. Thanks, John.

The red/orange interior is too crazy, they have a white leather option that's great for folks who live in hot / desert areas

The gesture control comes in the roof lights so the sensor as you said in the screen is false info, these sensors is for the screen dimming brightness.

I'll take this over the new M135i any day. At least we have normal proportions here and something that doesn't look like a Ford Focus or some kind of Kia

Excellent review - it’s understandable that someone thinking about making a purchase would possibly suffer analysis paralysis! It would be interesting to see a “head to head” comparison between some other vehicles within the approximate similar price point. I immensely enjoy these reviews and I am mindful to avoid sacrificing the “good for the perfect” is a challenge prior to paying down $40K for these kinds of vehicles - avoiding buyer’s remorse is important, (for me!). Thank you for these wonderfully done reviews!

10jmsoccer There is one. You can use the black scroll wheel on the right to scroll up or down for things like radio stations and sirius, as well as songs in apple carplay. On things like pandora or spotify or apple music radio, you can skip.

Got to love the sound of closing a BMW door.

Newer BMWs aren’t that bad for reliability. We have a 14 X5 and it has 50,000 and we have no problems so far.

@@MOSHIDOSHI yup. Haven't had any problems. If you want to own a BMW or any luxury German car make sure you do have extra money on the side for any thing that could happen.

@14:46 (no actual radio, skip track, next button) There is a skip track button. While your media (MP3 USB drive for example) is plugged in and you're in the folder that has all your tracks, push on (in) the little wheel that is on the right side of the steering wheel, below the VR button and Volume up button, and you'll see the tracks listed in the little 4" screen under the speedometer. Use that wheel I mentioned to then skip your tracks buy scrolling up or down and pushing the wheel in again to select the new track.

Also much more expensive than a lot of hot hatches. I think the X3 M4.0 is a better value. In Canada it's a 4 year bumper to bumper warranty and 4 years free maintenance.

The folding mirrors have to be coded to fold by either the key fob or the comfort access on the exterior door handle. Also the C pillar roundels are a throwback to the 70s 3.0 CS coupes. I have a F48 X1 which I drive with the sport button on at all times. Really can’t stand driving it in either eco mode or comfort mode. Really wish BMW would offer a M35i version of the X1.

That’s why its a unique car in driving it very different then any Bmw series X3 vs x2 this is 100 percent better in handeling , corners once again because a hatch not an suv much more better then x1 and x3 and i test drove all of them

The BMW badge on the D-Pillar has something to do with harking back to an old model from the 80's that had it. I think the M1 had it for example. But I agree it's dumb.

@@tonyzook3561 That's the whole reason I'd be worried about long term reliability! Squeezing more power out of less cubic inches with 0-20 oil in them is exactly why these engines suck. That and half the parts are plastic sitting next to turbo chargers. Give me a NA V6 and I'd consider it but enough with the wringing out a 4 cylinder to the edge of it's life with turbo. Heck, if bmw is hell bent on forced air, give it a super charger. At least it won't be 500 degrees under the hood with a plastic air manifold and water pump and all the other cheap plastic crap in there waiting to crack as soon as you breath on it.

I'd say the only bulletproof thing about this suv is the aisin transmission

Sofyan this is the SUV variant of the hot hatch BMW 135M that’s sold in Europe and, other makers. BMW won’t bring that car state side :-/

This is previous gen interior with a digital analog display. Looks just like my wife’s 435i. Same steering wheel, buttons, ect

Love the reaction when flooring this car.

You can hire programmer/tuners that can add all sorts of features such as fold in mirrors when you lock the door. You can add a BMS cold air intake and add a pre-customized map for to add more HP and TQ to the vehicle. And you made one big mistake. If you put the car in media or radio mode you can adjust the stations with that combination wheel/button in the middle of the controls on the right hand side of the steering wheel. It will also display on the HUD screen.n The new 2021 X1 has more options and now comes with a much bigger screen. I believe it's 12"! I find that X1 with optional aftermarket 19" wheels and wider performance tires has a better ride. You can hire a programmer/tuner and a BMS Cold Air Intake or go with BMW JB4 chip/tuner and you can get close to the same HP and TQ numbers.

I wish the m235i sounded and drove like this car. Or I wish this car has the m235i interior and features

The BMW spindle on the D pillar is to pay homage to the earlier BMW that had the logo in the same place on the D pillar.

6:42 incorrect. The M35i isn't 3 inches lower than the X2. I think you mean the roofline is 3 inches lower than an X1, but the overall ride height/ground clearance is only 20mm on the M35i than a regular X2.

I do like this a lot but I couldn't choose this over a barely used AMG GLA45. More power, AWD and a little better looks to me is why I would go with the AMG. I do like exactly how your tester is set up though, great color combos.
