The 2017 MLB Draft was a Complete DISASTER…

Taking a closer look at one of the most confusing MLB Drafts we've seen in a long time... The 2017 Major League Baseball Draft was stacked with young prospects destined to change the game of baseball...
Sadly six years later, that hasn't exactly been the case. From top picks Royce Lewis and Hunter Greene, to exciting picks such as Jo Adell, Brendan McKay and Nate Pearson, we dissect what might go down as one of the worst amateur drafts in professional sports.

    As Twins fan, I’m really hoping Royce continues his elite play, he was playing like a superstar down the stretch last year. Getting Bailey Ober in the 12th round that year (who’s a solid mid-rotation starter) has also been a nice addition as well.

    It’s hard enough for guys to succeed in this sport being that it’s arguably the most difficult. I don’t hold it against guys who don’t pan out. As a Rays fan, that McKay shit messed me up.

    I don’t hold it against the player, but I for sure hold it against the scouts. Thats what happens when you chase guys who are toolsy instead of actual baseball players. So many guys from this class who threw 98+ with no command, so many 5 o clock hitters drafted in this class.

    As a Phillies fan, I remember the Phillies no. 1 pick, Adam Hasley. He was the third in a line of first round draft picks that would be busts that were selected under Matt Klentak, who was undoubtedly one of the worst GMs out there. Unlike some of the other picks on this list who had a lot of hype and potential to be superstars, Hasley was drafted as a "safe" pick, a player who had a higher floor and lower ceiling, and was pretty much major league ready. He was moved up through the minors fast and played his first game for Philly in 2019. His numbers were unremarkable, but he was still planned to be a starting outfielder going forward. He played a handful of equally uninspiring games in 2020, and after only a few games in 2021, disappeared citing family issues as the reason. I then didn't hear anything about him until mid-2023, when he was playing for the white sox AAA team. Appearantly over parts of 5 seasons in the bigs, he's only played 158 games, and not been very productive at all. He's currently a free agent. I wish him the best, but likely his biggest chance at success is as a 4th outfielder, who could take over a full-time job in case of injury. Sorry this was so long-winded, but its another strange and ultimately disappointing 2017 draft pick story that seemed appropriate to share here

    I think it’s a combo of missing a minor league season in 2020 probably the most pivotal one for this class and a huge boom of high school talent that year that takes a long time to develop. The phenoms in this draft were all high school players

    There was also a noticeable difference when he started to abandon the cutter. It was a pitch he worked on in the offseason and had great results in spring training, but once the regular season began, hitters were teeing off on it. When he cut back on its usage, his overall numbers improved.

    19:15 one thing you didnt mention was McKay wasn't the only player getting serious 2-way looks in that years draft. Hunter Greene was considered a top 3 pick purely as a SS! but it was like he's 17 and throws 100+MPH Don't mess this up and that year when he played rookie ball the let him DH. Like hey lets see how u handle it, if u succeed we might let u pitch and play short or OF. but he got off to a slow start at the plate AND pitching so the Reds were basically like no we are not gonna screw this up your just a pitcher😂 imagine if he didn't have such a rough start to rookie ball he might've been 2-way guy too (i doubt it, he needed ALOT of seasoning as a prospect but still)😂😂

    Cleveland is probably the lone exception here, having drafted Spencer Strider, Tyler Freeman, James Karinchak, Eli Morgan and Kyle Nelson. I mean, Karinchak had a near all star season, Strider didn’t sign but he’s no less a bad pick, and Eli Morgan and Tyler Freeman have been solid MLB players. Even Ernie Clement has been a major league contributor. Not terrible.

    Hunter Greene probably better off in the bullpen. Like look at D.L. Hall like wasn't ace or even a #2 rotation guy, but definitely a solid #3, 4, or 5 guy. But the Orioles clearly saw the writing on the wall and made him a releiver instead. Or better yet the Reds themselves placed Aroldis Chapman in the pen because thats the only good place for high velocity guys. Of course tgey also probably have to stay clear of too many injuries to be successful in the pen.

    Imagine getting $24M in guaranteed money and, having a career .160 average, 6 years later. Evan White pulled the heist of the century on the Mariners. Baseball is a sport that takes constant work to be great, even after you’re drafted. It’s not like other sports, where you can get by on the skills you’ve already developed and pure athleticism. You give some kids $24M million right off the bat and, it kills a lot of the hunger & drive to constantly improve. I mean, they’re set for life, before ever coming anywhere close to MLB level.

  • @Dodgers-sw2uk
    @Dodgers-sw2uk6 ай бұрын

    One way to make the draft better would be to make a rule where a player must be at least 20 to enter the MLB draft. But have a system where the top 200-300 prospects out of high school get 20-30k a year (paid for the the league) to play for a minor league team of their choosing until old enough to enter the draft.. If a AAA team wants them they can go if they want. But they are only playing for the affiliate , not the MLB club they work with. Under this system teams would have a farrrrrr better idea of how to evaluate the talent and the top 15-20 picks would certainly go straight from the draft to an MLB roster.This would make the draft farrrrr more meaningful. It would also help small market teams because less talent will fall past them to teams like the Yankees and Dodgers late in the first round.

  • @kristopherwilson506

    @kristopherwilson506

    6 ай бұрын

    That doesn’t make too much sense, as the draft order is reverse standings, so small market teams tend to have worse records and pick higher. Also, the compensatory balance picks go to those smaller market teams as well. So talent isn’t falling past those teams. They’re just not developing them as well, or they’re trading them away. Also, 20-30k a year is not enough to live on… before the new CBA last year, minor leaguers made around 40k a season, on average (and they weren’t paid in the offseason!). And how do you rank the top 200-300 hs players? Guys like Mike Trout and Ian Anderson (#3 pick in the 2016 draft) who played in the northeast are harder to gauge because, well, they play in the northeast. So elite talent could fall through the cracks due to bias
