The 2008 Boston Celtics | Why They're Hated

Спорт

The 2008 Boston Celtics had one of the best seasons in NBA history, and they will never let you forget that. The Celtics were led by the big 3 of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. In their first season together they would win 66 games posting the greatest single season turnaround in NBA history, and would go on to defeat Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals. Despite these accomplishments, this team has developed a reputation over the years. A team that views their singular championship as perhaps a greater achievement than it actually is. So why are the 2008 Boston so hated?

As a diehard Celtics fan I think the team gets overhyped mainly because it’s been so damn long since we’ve won last. For being a team tied with the most championships it’s really underwhelming to think we’ve only won once since the championship in 86. 08 was definitely an amazing team and with the overall culture in Boston I definitely enjoy the reunions but can see why people get annoyed too. You could argue the number reunions come from them all simply just really liking each other and wanting to see each other more often outside of the win. Though maybe other one off championship teams should take notes and have reunions too. Would be cool to see the older Mavs meet up sometime. Fingers crossed the C’s now can pull us out of another championship drought though, but I wouldn’t be surprised if guys from the past couple iterations of the team these past few seasons try doing reunions as well. Can definitely see Smart coming back to chill in Boston with Tatum and Brown later down the road after retiring for example.

The Celtics of the late 2010’s and early 2020’s should be considered a pretty darn good team that unfortunately hasn’t been at their best in the playoffs. The 08 team was very good, but quite frankly wouldn’t be talked about as much if they didn’t annoy people as much as they do. The biggest issue I see is that people tend to go off of total wins and not as much the percentage of them when discussing coaches. Doc fortunately coached longer, but has one championship, and three appearances in the conference finals or later I believe (could’ve been four if KG doesn’t get hurt in 09, but three as is). As a Miami native, that's a BS excuse. They say the same thing about us, but the truth is winning made Miami into a basketball city. Something Atlanta hasn't done. Miami is a giant melting pot of a city. Arguably ground zero for immigrants who come here for a fresh start. As such, basketball is not always a predominant sport in many of those citizens' homeland. They come here and learn the culture. When the team is good, and winning, it's easier for them folks to acclimate and become fans. Once they do, they stick around. So Atlanta's problem is not there is too much to do, it's that the team sucks, and nobody cares.

Let's not forget that horrible Game 2 in the 2008 Finals where Leon Powe was somehow awarded more FTA the entire Lakers team (13 for Powe, 10 for LA) and the Celtics had a 38 to 10 FTA advantage. Even the infamous Game 6 of the WCF wasn't that lopsided (25 to 40). I remember a play late when LA was making a comeback, Pierce was chasing Kobe and got hung up on a screen so he reached out and grabbed Kobe's right arm, who ended up putting up and making a shot with his left hand. This happened right in front of a referee,. No whistle.

It’s how you think these things ideally SHOULD play out. When superteams are made up of one or more guys that have already won, it feels obnoxious, like stacking the deck so the rich get richer. But the fact that all three were in the latter half of their careers and had all failed to get there until they joined together makes it kind of cool to me. In that way, it’s also better that they didn’t win a bunch of times. So, they may not be a dynasty or whatnot, but there is something special about them.

That Lakers team was built to beat the Celtics that year. With Trevor Ariza healthy, Bynum healthy that year and winning 67 games they were not the same team in 08. Who was guarding Paul Pierce in 08? Vladimir Radmonovich, that’s a big difference from a young Ariza. And the Perkins getting hurt narrative doesn’t hold much water because he got hurt in game 6 not game 1, the Celtics had 5 games before than to beat the Lakers and they didn’t. And what bench player took Perks spot after getting hurt? Just a player named RASHEED WALLACE a player more than capable of getting offensive rebounds and rebounds in general, not to mention he gave you more offense with his outside shooting.

Pierce called himself the best player in the world after winning in 2008. KG and Pierce still flaunting that title to this day isn’t surprising. Garnett was the anti Tim Duncan. He thought being loud would scare opponents but it only got him 1 ring that he had to team up with other superstars to get. He really overvalued himself. Same with Pierce. I don't fixate on this one championship and no one on the Celtics sub on reddit does either. The only reason it gets talked about a lot more than it should be is because a) 3 of the guys on that team was a top 10 player at their position in that time and it was the only ring they ever won and b) 3 of the guys on that team went on to become broadcasters where they got to talk about it so often. You don't hear Dirk or Chauncey Billups talking the livelong day about their one ring because they're "humble", they don't talk about it because they don't have the soapbox to circle back to it every two to three business days.

I remember here superteams era started. Lot of talks were going on like who is gonna be their backup, what if one of them gets injured (which happened in next season) and if they really gonna be that good. Well they were and their rings was well deserved. I actually liked them, but the problem is they praised themselves too much - like they were some dynasty, but it was only one season dominance. If KG never got injured it's possible they could become that since after he came back he wasn't the same. This trio run was good, but not as they praised it on the media. Probably if they would've won that amazing 2010 series against Lakers they would cemented themselves as all time greats

I never really got that, but I was pulling for em at the time to a point. But I think its the context around it that makes em feel so good about it all. Without that it's just whatever.

Just a friendly reminder, the last time the Celtics won the finals, Grand Theft Auto IV had just come out, and almost everyone was still using flip phones at that point in time....

It's ben 2 - 3 years since my team, the Milwaukee Bucks won their NBA Title. I have heard more about the 2008 Celtics since 2021 since the 2021 Champions. The Nuggets won the Title last year... We will probably forget about that Mid-Season cuz the 2008 Celtics are having another reunion.

As a Lakers fan I 100% agree with this message…. people also got get we were missing two Starters Bynum and Ariza that’s why them crying about weak ass Kendrick Perkins in 09 is a joke ..

The amount of wasted money and organizational manpower on numerous Teams after Doc Rivers got this ring is astounding.

This was a far more entertaining video than I was expecting. That said, this team ABSOLUTELY milked the living shit out of this one title..

I think that if the Celtics weren’t full of themselves and kinda rode that wave for the off-season and kept their mouth shut, they would be beloved like those one and done teams. Even as a Heat fan I would give them so much more respect if they just shut up about 2008.

Another difference could be is that other one ring wonders like the 04 Pistons and 11 Mavericks were underdogs

I also don't think they'd have beaten Kobe in 09 either. The 09 Lakers were the team that broke Boston's win streaks that year, won 66 games, had a full training camp, and had infinitely better coaching.
