Given the swampy and forbidden terrain in that particular part of the country the project cost is reasonable. It's not about the length of the road but the marshy terrain which requires a lot of foundational piling, embarkment and earthwork, amongst other civil engineering technical requirements. Such a project would cost a minimum of $1bn in the United States where I currently sojourn where the cost of road projects is 3-4 times more than comparable projects in Europe and China. For instance the New Yankee stadium in the Bronx costs more than $1bn more than 15 years ago which could build 6-7 projects like this Bonny one in Nigeria at this costs profile. It would cost more than $2bn today. And that's just a baseball stadium. So also was the the cost of Cuomo Bridge which the former disgraced NY State governor, Andrew Cuomo, named after his late father, by the way. That's just a stadium. Here we're talking about a major highway infrastructure. Common guys, get real we're not talking about some street road here, but a major highway in a complex terrain traversing several communities that will usher in massive development in that hitherto neglected part of the country. It's in this light that I find some of the comments here rather gross and disgusting and borne out of pure ignorance. People should stop whining and complaining about matters they know little to nothing about. What the Nigerian government is paying for this project is a small fraction of what the New York State or US government, for that matter would pay for a project of this size and magnitude with so many bridges, swampy terrain and what have you, given the value of the naira. Julius Berger is right to ask for contract cost variation due to the free fall of the naira value whether or not it had originally agreed not to. As at the time of the award of the contract nobody knew that the naira would be so devalued by over 500 percent. JB cannot therefore reasonably be expected to execute the contract and deliver at such a huge loss. Thank God it was already 85 percent completed before it asked for the variation. No big deal. Give them the money and get the job done ASAP. That's what matters in the end, after all. It's a great project that will open up and connect a vast area of Rivers state's hitherto inaccessible area to the mainland. It's such a worthy project. Kudos to the Federal government for its massive road infrastructure projects all over the country. We Nigerians cannot be specialists in criticism only. Give praise to whom it's due and have a balanced attitude in everything rather than spewing negatives all the time. This one is eminently praise worthy and I don't care about the cost structure. Like I said it's just a tiny fraction of what it would cost in the United States for a similar project. Damn it! 0:40

Nigeria doesn't need such project now, we are broke, if govt inject that huge amount in electricity sector, industries and businesses will begin to thrive, USA and China you mentioned are massively rich, California GDP is larger than the whole of Africa GDP, investments in Beijing is far larger than the whole of Africa, so where is your sense? Bro we are broke to embark on such project, over 100 million people living in abject poverty, over 34 million uncultivated arable lands yet hunger is killing our people on a daily basis, where is your sense, we are too broke to take on this project, 20 million out of school children and federal government is talking about coast highway are we mad in this country or what?

@@EbukaMark-cu1bk the only reason California’s GDP is so high is because it’s home to Silicon Valley which houses a lot of the multinational tech giants headquarters around the world which are worth billions. They also massively contribute to the USA’s. But you are right better technological infrastructure cannot be made without sustainable electricity. But good road infrastructure is needed for logistics and to develop these infrastructures nationwide. You must consider all the states with poor access roads not near major ports or freight connections.

With the nature of the terrain i think they would have dualized this road. This would serve us more in the future.

Stop saying this. If you do not know how things work don't things like things. Do you what it takes to sand fill different areas of the road.

You guys are so funny. Do you know how much it cost to construct a road? have you involve in any of such project before? Did you consider how much compensation the government have to pay along the pipeline for those whose land and properties will be taken and damaged along the way? You are always want to find something wrong in everything and wonder why many past government just never do anything. Because if they do, you will complain. If they don't you will complain. If you think they are not doing it right, or too costly, maybe you can go and do a cost estimate for everything that goes into that road construction and publicize what you think should be the appropriate cost. At least you have that right as a Nigerian.

Quality, not cost, is the most important aspect of road construction. JB has a proven track record. Many roads built by others are low quality and don't last, thereby costing more in the long haul
