Everyone hates it for it's difficulty but Days of Thunder is actually a very good game. Great 3-d graphics without flickering, slipstreaming other race cars to sling past them, pit stops that takes true skill to master, good music. It's very underrated.

Nostalgia may be clouding my judgement as it's the only racing game I owned back in the day, but I put Galaxy 5000 as #1. Such a good combination of racing, using items, a jump mechanic, decision making (how much to repair the car).

Yes, agreed. I haven't played all of the racing games on this least, but many of the F1 racers felt similar while this one stood out. I prefer it over Rad Racer. I like the "RPG" elements of improving your car. Out of the F1 type games I've played it's the one that added in the most video game elements. I can also appreciate a game that balances difficulty progression well. With the shittiest car you can just hold accelerate the whole time & not worry about corners being too sharp because your max speed doesn't have you go off the side, but as the game progresses & you use faster cars (& need to, to win) I find myself strategically needing to take my "foot" off the gas or use the brake well.

I was definitely a Super Sprint and Super Offroad kid - but I see in this list you really only have a handful of archetypes: RC Pro Am types, Super Offroad types, Pole Position types, and Excitebike stands alone. You may be able to break out the Pole Positions into shooting/no shooting, like Roadblasters or Mach Rider vs Rad Racer, for instance.

Watching a lot of videos like this, you start to develop a feel for which games were popular outside the US vs among Americans. And Micro Machines is one of those franchises that comes up among British reviewers. And 9 times out of 10, looking up such a game reveals that it has British developers - sure enough, CodeMasters is from England. It's interesting how things fall geographically like that. I also notice this with games like Speedball II (English developers), Cannon Fodder (English developers), Lemmings (Scottish developers). These were the games we played when growing up here in Australia, on our PCs and our 8-bit systems like Commodores, but aren't spoken about with nostalgia by the Americans. I identify with British video game channels more as a result. I think the distinction is blurred with more modern games. Emblematic of this is that I don't think people realise that Rockstar (same people who made Lemmings) are British and their modern games look American and are probably way more popular there.

I have to put original radio racer at number 1. It has faster feeling game play, better sound, better music, better controls, and better graphics. Part 2 did have the better ending theme though. I would have to put tc pro and in 2nd followed by formula 1 1990 which seems to be a rad racer 1987 clone with a mix or rad racer 1 and 2 elements.

Love racing games, and never really knew how many really wacky games there were, but also how many good ones there were on the console. It only got better as Nintendo moved on to the SNES, but not as many and a lot more abstract racers. My go-to games were Top Gear (1&2), F-Zero, Micro Machines and Uniracers. Never really played Super Mario Kart back then.

It is pure simplicity (never understood how they never tryed to port to other 8 bit systems like atari). It is quite unique, the opponents behavior it's defined by colors, when we collide against other cars, we have a small chance to recover control.

I never had a NES when I was a kid mainly because I was 20 when it was released. I have never played a NES racing game in my life. I have never been a fan of racing games that put your car/bike at the bottom middle of the track where you just dodge cars by moving left or right, a la pole position, as you "race" towards an infinite horizon. Interesting to see just how many racing games were made for the system though and R.C. games look pretty cool

The NES could really do the beautifully clean, chunky, cartoon look well, as shown in R.C Pro-Am clips. I have never played Rad Racer and I trust your judgement on its playability but Square, where is the music? I love Outruns memorable tunes...

Rad Racer has music. By pressing up on the d-pad you can choose one of 3 different (not exceptional but decent) tracks, or you can play with no music if you wish

nes racing games ... not too many I play (or would play). Indy heat is excellent with the 4P option but off road looks terrible - why those 4 car colors??? and this version is the only one with 4P :( so sad.... the rest? will try super sprint in the hopes of 4P option 😀 thanks for the video!

some games arent about the graphics mate, the gameplay on some of these is still great...and tbh most retro games have one thing that new games will never have...nostalgic factor which turns a game into a great time machine back to times when things were simpler

Stinky. NES is stinky. Master System blows it away in every regard. I very much don't think Rad Racer 2 is better than Outrun on sms. There just aren't enough colours in the NES. 3 per tile or sprite. Useless.

@@oldstylegaming The NES was very good at replicating arcade games from the 70's like Donkey Kong. When games like Double Dragon came out it looked old though. Black backgrounds just don't cut it any more. No game has more than around 3 colours on screen at any time. Even Battletoads. They are mostly green and orange with the strangest colour palette I've ever seen. Even weirder than the c64 palette.
