Yuval Noah Harari is a New York Times bestselling author whose books have sold over 12 million copies and translated into more than 45 languages. He’s often referred to as one of the most profound thinkers of our time. And in this episode you will see why…
SHOWNOTES
How we can hack humans and manipulate their desires [3:26]
How algorithms will learn to understand you better than you understand yourself (and why you could be replaced by one) [5:03]
Why corporations will even be able to predict your sexual orientation… [8:50]
The reality of outsourcing the self-discovery process… [12:27]
How algorithms will change the way we make art… [15:49]
Can AI save us from cancer? (See how it’s possible, but decide for yourself if it's dangerous)... [18:10]
The battle between privacy and health... [19:29]
How to take control of the story you tell yourself and why you need to stop thinking of your life as a movie… [21:09]
Why we’re heading into the direction of immortality and the future is just a series of massive disruptions [28:44]
Why you need to continuously reinvent yourself if you want to survive to 2035. [30:01]
The two most important tools you will need to succeed in the world of AI (and they’re not what you think). [32:05]
Why Yuval believes that science fiction is the most important artistic genre… [34:25]
See what Yuval has to say about the world’s 3 biggest challenges… [37:29]
QUOTES
“We Are Now Hackable Animals”
“When infotech merges with biotech what you get is the ability to create algorithms that understand me better than I understand myself.” [5:20]
“Maybe the most important thing in life is to get to know yourself better. But for all of history this was a process of self-exploration which you did from things like meditation, sports, or art, and complementation. But what does it mean when the process of self-exploration is being outsourced to a big data algorithm? The philosophical implications are mind-boggling.” [12:34]
“The story of your life is made of bits and pieces and it only makes sense" [23:50]

I believe the exact opposite, I see the interviewer as someone who just focus on turning every information into something useful for people to be more productive and things like that, when someone like Harari can teach about so much information that is simply about understanding of the world. The interviewer is not smart enough to take advantage of all of the knowledge for the complex human experience, and only focus on how to find your passion, how to be productive, etc... it is a very closed mind, in my opinion. But it is interesting to see that you think exactly the opposite.

The interviewer wants to make everything about how you can improve yourself, which is a narrow perspective, and so wastes the intelligence of this guy.

So good to see him really hammering across the seriousness of the implications. The philosophical intricacies are not immediately obvious to people who're only interested in hacking humans so they can become high performance machines. That's the problem with stuff like this: it's beyond the comprehension of most people, and will inevitably land up in the hands of those people who don't particularly care to understand it any more than is required to get what they want (money, power, sex etc.)

It is very interesting to hear such a spectacular mind who is inconsistent in his thinking! On one hand his fullhearted advice for the individual is to invest in Emotional Intelligence and Mental Balance. (Himself practices quiet Vipassana 60 days a year). That means he believes an individual can inwardly influence himself for the better, and that has the most potential influence on human life. On the other hand his recommendation for governments and public life is to focus on outer problems like environment and biotechnology, as if the human inner potential doesn't exist. If our inner potential is only now started to be explored and realized - it should be taught in schools, universities, police, and public institutes - for our life depends on it! It seems that YNH both agrees with me and disagrees. Another inconsistency is that the self is a story, just like many other stories. How does he actually implement this notion? Or is this also a story? Does he really disregard himself, because it is only a story he tells himself? He speaks of the importance of striving towards truth. So what truth did he find ? Does he live this truth, or is it only in his head? Am I the only one in the audience that sees the king is naked?

In another long interesting interview with Lex Fridman he says AI has consciousness and then also says animals have no intelligence, whereas all living creatures even trees have consciousness (which is intelligent or knowing/sensing, even if not similar to human intelligence/execution) whereas AI is only a tool even if more advanced than the calculator.

My dad immigrant from Italy, with only 3 years education, was given a trade to learn when he was 7 years old. He came alone USA @ 16. Worked in that trade for 60 + years. In order for him to keep a 6 day work week until he was 80 years old he had to re-invent himself with in that trade because it was physically demanding. He did it naturally because he absolutely loved what he did. He went from building homes to building cabinets when he was 55 years old. Learning something new IMO is the key to happiness.

This is a very important message. People are clueless as to how much information about themselves they voluntarily give away about themselves every day, in their Facebook feed, their Instagram, their tweets, their browsing habits, and yes, their comments on KZread videos (so here I go taking part in it myself). A major thrust in corporate America today is developing better and better capabilities for collecting, storing, and processing all of this data. When you reveal something about yourself to a corporation, you have a specific reason for doing so, and basic ethics dictates that that information should be used for that purpose and that purpose alone. But that's not what happens - it is merged in alongside all of the other data they have, from myriad other sources, and used to fuel artificial intelligence algorithms that reveal much more about you than you think you have revealed. This is *knowledge* that can be used to manipulate you economically. And is being used for that purpose. I don't know if there's anything we can do about this at this juncture. Europe passed a law - the GDPR (General Data Privacy Regulations) that places massive constraints on the way data can be used. We really would be much better off if we had a GDPR in the United States as well, but if there has ever been anything corporate lobbyists will line up to fight, that is it. Too much money is on the table - they will not let that prize be snatched from them easily. So, sure - support a U.S. GDPR - it would be great. But mostly just BE AWARE. Be aware of what's being done to you and be suspicious regarding the ads that appear in front of you and question yourself regularly to ensure that your actions are really aligned with your true heart's desires. Think about what is important to you in your life, and be CONSCIOUS of pursuing it, instead of getting lured down whatever primrose path the "Powers That Be" would like to see you on. Good luck to you - we're all going to need it. The are powerful forces aligned against us here.

@@ilonaurban2796 I do think our reliance on social media is changing us. Not really changing individual people, but rather changing successive "mini-generations" as they move through childhood and out into life. A colleague of mine and i were discussing just a few days ago how the later crops of young engineers in our company shy away from "face to face interactions" - they're just more comfortable working through Slack or that sort of thing. I *like* Slack and like the convenience it affords, but I don't have any "discomfort" doing it the old fashioned way. But that attitude seems to be becoming less common.

I really enjoyed this conversation, AI has incredible potential. I work with an A.I. company and see it every day... I will say though, one thing to keep in mind is intuition and GUT are incredibly important and to rely all of your decision making on algorithms may not be the best idea. Use both hemispheres of your brain, left and right, including that brain in your gut! And your heart, gotta follow that sometimes too... Different parts of you will guide you at different times. Don't be afraid to follow that. You will be led places that A.I. won't take you... and that journey is INCREDIBLY important. Trust me! Fiction is right. Bad fiction at that. Enlighten yourself and get a KING JAMES Bible and begin to read about life everlasting. Don't believe the BS that you are your own GOD because YOU ARE NOT.

Listen to some of Jordan Peterson's material - he delivers a very similar message. Truly knowing ourselves can be intimidating at times, but it's always valuable.

I finished Sapiens a couple of days ago, I cannot describe my experience learning from this book, it's brilliantly written, I love the mix of facts, simplicity and the bunch of philosophical questions that makes you think a lot and reflect. It helped me put some things in perspective and in a way extract myself from my current realty and think about meaning and purpose. Thanks for the interview , thanks for the book and I already got Homo Deus in Audible 😀
