The 1998 NASCAR Cup Season was Dominated by Just 2 Drivers | The Mark Martin Apologetics Tour Part 3

Спорт

The 1998 Winston Cup season kind of came out of left field for most people. In an era of considerable parity, two men stepped up and had the best statistical years of their careers and won a combined 21 races that year, leaving no room for anyone else to shine. 1998 wasn't just an amazing year for Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon, but also the 50th anniversary of the sport, and the year that solidified the Jeff Gordon-Mark Martin rivalry. Going forward, you could always judge how good one driver's year was, based one whether or not he did better than the other. To this day, the 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup Season is still my favorite season in NASCAR history, and for good reason.

I'd argue that the Jeff vs Dale rivalry did exist, but was mostly a show for their fans, who most certainly had that rivalry between them.

To me it was a cultural rivalry. It was really Jeff vs Dale, Rusty, Jarrett, Irvin, Mark, Terry etc. Dale was just the figurehead of it.

@@S1apShoes Yep. If you look... well not too hard, you can still see people bicker about it today. There was also a pretty good documentary made on it, iirc , something like "Unrivaled" here on youtube. I liked that one, and if you haven't seen it I do recommend it. There is also Jeff Gordon's time on Jr's podcast where they talked a bit about that as well.

The best part of the '90s NASCAR era was the television production and how GOOD it was. ESPN (and not the god awful iteration that returned in 2007) had the best broadcast team that's ever called a stock car race in Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett, and Benny Parsons. They made the races entertaining to watch, but didn't make a fool out of the viewer like Darrell Waltrip tended to do. Even on TNN, Buddy Baker and Eli Gold somehow made 500 mile snoozefests at Pocono and Dover watchable, and when you had the rare race on CBS, you could count on the legend Ken Squier to narrate the proceedings like he was reading you an old time novel by the evening fire. Races were patient and NASCAR tended to let them naturally develop. There wasn't caution flags thrown randomly to bunch the field up towards the end, there wasn't fake drama before a race to build up some anti-climatic conclusion (see the Kyle Busch/Kevin Harvick incidents in 2011 and how the Speed Channel was just trying to get them to deck one another). No stupid ass Chase system, and god damn, BRISTOL HAD NO PROGRESSIVE BANKING. I can't stand to watch NASCAR anymore. Brian France ruined it and I doubt they'll ever get it close to what they had before. At least I have the memories.

A lot of you are probably here from the video about Mark Martin's 1994 campaign, and I tied this video into the series because I felt like making a new video about 1998 would just be too redundant, and this video covers the subject pretty succinctly. I know David Pearson had some pretty wild win percentages in the 70's, but he was racing part-time back then. So, in the interest of fairness, I only counted those who ran the full season. I'll probably devote an entire video on the Silver Fox in the future.

Ooh I would love a video on Pearson. I think you should also consider a video documenting the 2003-04 seasons. The landscape of NASCAR was much different by the start of 2005 than it had been at the end of 2002. 2003 served as the beginning of the Brian France era, the finale of Winston Cup era, the death of the Latford points system in Cup, the end of racing back to the flag, as well as the last full time season for Pontiac. 2003 also marked the last year of Union 76’s partnership, the Labor Day Southern 500 until 2015, the beginning of Ford’s sponsorship of the championship weekend, the start of homogeneous rooflines, as well as Rockingham’s final fall race. The Truck series ran its final races at Mesa Marin and South Boston. 2003 was also the first year that NASCAR’s second tier would be known as the Busch Series , with the name being shortened from the Busch Grand National Series. The championship battles that year also proved to be remarkable. Travis Kvapil snuck away with the Truck championship in a shocking upset, in which championship favorite Brendan Gaughan uttered the famous words, “Jimmy Smith can kiss my ass!” after being wrecked out late in the race. Brian Vickers late season charge in the Busch Series earned him the championship in a four way battle between himself, David Green, Ron Hornaday, & Bobby Hamilton Jr. In the Cup Series, Matt Kenseth dominated the points despite his lone win at Las Vegas, and wrapped up the championship one race early at Rockingham, making him the final Winston Cup champion, and the first driver to win the cup with a single win since Benny Parsons in 1973, as well as the fourth driver in Cup history to do so. This ultimately led to the implementation of The Chase in 2004. 2004 marked the beginning of Nextel/Sprint’s sponsorship of the Cup Series, which would continue until 2016 and Sunoco’s partnership. In 2004, Rockingham hosted its final cup race, and the fallout from the Ferko Lawsuit resulted in Darlington’s traditional spring race getting the boot. The Busch Series saw its final race at Nazareth, and Truck Series had Mansfield and Atlanta added to its schedule. Toyota also made its NASCAR debut, running the Tundra in the Truck Series that year. The championship battles that year proved to be remarkable as well. Journeyman Bobby Hamilton Sr. won the truck championship as an owner/driver, the only truck champion to do so and the first overall since Alan Kulwicki. Hamilton would die of cancer two and a half years later. Busch North standout Martin Truex Jr beat future teammate and rival Kyle Busch for the Busch Series championship driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr’s Chance 2 Motorsports. Polarizing upstart Kurt Busch beat out Jimmie Johnson by a scant 8 points in the first year of the new Chase format, even losing a wheel at one point. Jeff Gordon had his first of three would be championships, something that remains controversial to this day. Overall, both seasons saw a change of guard as well. Bill Elliott, the Labonte brothers, and Rusty Wallace scored their final wins, and men like Dale Earnhardt Jr, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, and many more established themselves as the next generation of superstars. Speaking of Earnhardt, these two seasons served as the unlikely peak of DEI’s success as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr’s career. Junior and Michael Waltrip won a combined 10 races during this time, including two Daytona 500’s and 5/8 restrictor plate races run during these two years. Waltrip never won again in Cup following 2003, and Dale Earnhardt Jr won just eleven times from 2005-17. DEI won just three times more and ceased to exist after 2009, the last remnants of the team dying with the end of the 2014 season. 2003 & 04 also serve as the only Cup championships for Roush, who had come frustratingly close with Mark Martin only several occasions. Kenseth and Busch, scored their only titles as well. Kenseth would go on to compete for the title year in and year out, leaving Roush for JGR in 2013. He retired quietly in 2018, driving part time for Roush. Kurt Busch remains a contender in the Cup Series, currently driving the #1 Camaro for Chip Ganassi. He has had a tumultuous career though, having been involved in numerous controversies over the years, but he has matured over time, and is now a respected veteran. These are just a few of the many story lines from 2003-04

Not only did he reach 7 championships, but he did it with three different formats, AND he did it in an era where anyone can win on any given weekend. Pretty spectacular in my book.

Bryson Turner the thing is, the game was rigged in his favor for most of the sports timeline. Whenever he had a bad day, NASCAR would change the rules to keep him on top. He essentially just skated to the top without even trying thanks to the constant rule changes and shit points formats. As far as im concerned, he only earned 2 of those championships. The rest were handed to him by the NASCAR committee so that they had their 'golden boy' of the modern era.

I've never seen domination by a single team, driver, or both, ever. I was born in 2002. You were 12 by that time S1ap. I became a fan in late 2003 and watched the sport as a kid in its height. The 2007 Cup Series season saw Jimmie absolutely dominate the division for the first true time, unfortunately I really don't have any real memories of that. But I do know that I probably didn't care about it. I was only 5. After sitting out for two full seasons, past 2008, I returned as a fan in Spring 2011. I had seen domination in races but never seasons truly, up until Toyota started owning the tour about 3 years ago and now their staggering 19-win season last year. The closest thing we got to 1998 in the last decade was 2013, but I didn't watch races the last half of the year despite being a fan for a multitude of reasons, the most of which stem from domestic issues. The last time this has a chance of happening before the next 3 or 4 years is this year right here. While we will see a new short-track package I don't see that affecting the entire scope of the championship picture. Kyle Busch had an amazing season in 2019. With a potential Rolex 24 victory in the shadows, we could see him absolutely tear it up before the Gen-7 car makes its debut next season. The same could be said for Denny Hamlin too. If there are any two people that can replicate this then it's Denny and Kyle. But what are the chances of that happening? I guess we'll have to wait but domination like this will have to wait for some 30 years likely before it's seen again. It's been 21 years and I don't see that even being matched to any extent until 2026 or 2027, especially with the teams getting used to the Gen-7 car for a few years. But who knows? I could be wrong but then yet again I could be partly right in some respects. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Great video S1ap, I can't wait for the next one. See ya later 🤙

I was 35 and well aware of the season that was unfolding. Being a huge Mark Martin fan, it was an eye opener how graceful he was being defeated. It was like I was being schooled by a master on how to be glad you even get to do what'ca do....something you love. In time I learned to respect Gordon, but at the time, I felt like he was handed the best cars and given the drivers seat. Not true of course, and now he stands as a reminder of the old guard....hard to believe. Good video kid.

  • @DavidJ867

It's just been Mark Martin's luck over the course of his career that his best seasons were historical seasons for other drivers. In 1990, Dale Earnhardt put up a dominating 9 wins and Mark had to settle for 2nd in points. Jeff dominated 1997 with 10 wins and although Mark charged toward the end of the year, he ran out of races. And 1998, that was Mark's best year for sure. But Gordon put up one of the best years in NASCAR's history. If Mark had been lucky enough to have a great year in one of those years where there was no clear dominator, he'd have won a championship. That's pretty much how Matt Kenseth won 2003.

Welp, this put the late 90s into perspective. Thanks man for putting this fabulous content up! This stuff just keeps getting better and better with each topic you talk about. You pretty much summed up what was unquestionably true dominance between Gordon and Martin. All this was beyond truth because I had to endure watching each race weekend hoping #3 to win, only to be clouded by the 'Wonder Boy' vs Martin show. In fact, in 1997 Gordon won a ridiculous 10 races that year! That's 1/3 of the season people! If you wanted a borefest then look no further then the 95-98 seasons. This was a time I wanted to forget because #3 team was a no show till after his surgery from the 'dega wreck. Plus the fact his focus was on his son's up and coming future. But that's just another story to talk about...

Actually, it didn't become a curb stomp battle between these two until the Southern 500. Going into this race, Marky Mark was only 67 points behind Jeff: The Rainbow Warrior. In those days, that point total meant you could lose the points lead if you finished as low as 16th. This meant Gordon was one DNF away from losing the points lead. 300 laps into this 367 lap race, Gordon was leading, but Martin was in 6th. However, with about 50 laps to go, Martin ran into engine problems and couldn't go on any further. Gordon won, Martin finished 40th and he found himself in a 199 point deficit that he would never escape. (Also, since Mark Wahlberg doesn't like people calling him Marky Mark, I'll just do it to Mark Martin.)

When he fell back during those last laps at the all star race, I was in tears at home. (That paint scheme remains one of his top 10 best.) But ultimately, he triumphed in the end of the season, beating out every major driver I could think of at the time. And I celebrated for months. The 1998 season pushed me well over the edge and I became a die hard fan, enough to spend all of my allowance money on collectables and other awesome Gordon gear. And I still have all of it. This was, by far, the most amazing season NASCAR ever had for me. The 94/95/96 seasons were awesome, but this one blew me away. And I know for a fact it will never be topped.

He was so thrilled to see Mark win while there I sat listening to Jeff and Ray on the scanner trying to figure out how on earth they'd managed to run out of gas. I've always liked and respected Mark Martin. So the fact he won that night made Gordon's crazy luck a lot easier to handle. Sadly, I lost my friend unexpectedly a few years later. The events of that night in Charlotte are something I actually cherish now because, just as you said, he got to see his guy win that night.
