This short film actually highlights the exact spot in the book, where I’m at The Limit by Michael Cannell Life and death on the 1961 Grand Prix circuit

I've just finished reading that very book for the second time. It's a great read. Also an excellent read is Touch wood the Autobiography of 1953 Le mans winner Duncan Hamilton.

Generally the Ferrari 246 was significantly faster than the Vanwall in 1958. It was the first year the GPs were run on standard avgas rather than spirits. up until 1957 F1 world championship races were run over 500km or 300 miles while in 1958 the distance was changed to 300km or 186 miles which meant the races were very short. From about 1960-1970 the distnace was changed to a min of 300km or 2hrs which meant the 1963 French and Belgian would be 313 miles or 500km and the 1970 US, Italian and Belgian 400km. However in 1958 only the short races made the Ferrari 246 vIable and the Championship possible for Hawthorn and expains why in 1958 in Morroco Hawthorn is intend on driving as slowly as possible to stay ahead of Brooks and Lewis Evans and as at Le Mans in 55 Mike is driving at 100% concentration to maximise his chance of finishing 2nd. It is in fact his both brilliant and ruthless drive. If only we had good film of the hawthorn/ brooks duel for 3rd in the middle of this race.

When you say "Spirits" do you prefer Vodka, Methanol, Pure Alcohol or Whisky ? I find my car runs best on 100% Vegetable oil and you can eat the smell. But there again it is a Diesel !!

No, two hours was a maximum for slow or delayed races. 1960s gps were max 200 miles. The shortening was because petrol fuel gave fewer miles per gallon.

Yes.. races we're about endurance. Often a car was clearly faster than another at some point so they didn't hold them up, then in twenty laps when his car is bad he will move over and let the guy coming up to pass..

At places where the cars were close to each other in performance and no team orders were at play we say some fantastic races.. Monza usually comes to mind..

Mike Hawthorn only won because Moss's car was riddled with problems Moss won four races that year to Hawthorn's one and had he being driving a reliable car would have won the title with ease. It's a travesty that Hawthorn was crowned champion.

Completely agreed, and his cold, calculating and devil-may-care driving attitude was poison. He deliberately drove in a way that would affect even his teammates -poor Musso was but one of his targets- while scheming with Collins to get shared scores that would benefit them financially. Never an ounce of remorse for his part in the 1955 LeMans tragedy. However, he would not live to see the end of the year.

As I recall, Phil Hill was ahead of Hawthorn, who was not having a great day and let Mike through at the end.
