I was lucky enough to purchase an original early 1859 McClellan Saddle in 1972 from a museum hear in Arizona. I had the dryed leather replaced with new leather using the 1862 Ordance Manuel for proper dimensions. I used the saddle through 2005 when I became to old to continue riding. I still have the saddle and it is still the nices Rebuilt Original 1859 I have ever seen. It still has the original rawhide seat in very good shape. Great Saddle.

I re-enacted in the 80's and early 90's with the 1st Florida, Co A Cavalry and built most of the saddles used by my Troopers. They were 1859 McClellans and it took a lot of research to find the patterns used for its construction. I also made a couple of Hope saddles, a saddle discovered by US Army officers during the Mexican war and adopted by a few men who continued their service and use during the civil war. If memory serves, the only official adoption of the hope saddle was a few hundred that were used on the horses used to haul artillery. Your research and presentation is excellent.

As a 'hate' message goes, I love this episode and 'hated' that it came to an end, and though I have an '1859 Mac-Saddle, I simply adore my Texas Hope saddle above all others. I truly appreciate you 'learning me up' on the Model 1857 Mac-Saddle which I was ignorant of. I hate to say it, this episode is superb and WHO-RAH for TEXAS? Thank you, very much sir.

McClellan probably worked the battle buddy system. I don't think he was in the 1st Cavalry Regiment, but those groups were a lot more tight knit back then, and all of the officers (Westpoint) would have known each other. McClellan served in the Mexican American war with Zachary Taylor of 1/1 Cav... (Kearney was the command, then Price). Not sure who McClellan served with. Being in the Mexican American war, he already would have been familiar with the various Southwestern saddles, and 1st Cav would have already employed them if they had any sort of field advantage. IMO.

Spot on, 11th OVC! Outstanding historical research, with an interesting and informative presentation. I have six model 1904 McClellans, all of which were rebuilt on the 1859 cavalry model pattern in the late 1980s thru 2000 by the late Russell Fagan, a superb West Virginia saddle/harness craftsman. McClellan saddles are work of functional art and, I believe, as comfortable to ride as any modern western saddle. Keep up the good work y'all.

I found a saddle maker who allowed me to copy his patterns. I have since destroyed them as I can no longer do any leather work due to the aging of my hands and resulting loss of strength. One3 way to get patterns, although expensive is to buy an 11 inch model and disassemble it. If I still had the patterns, I would be glad to share, but when I could not work anymore, I got rid of them as well as my western patterns.

@@jordanmoulopoulos4277 According to Webster's, the word, "Troop," has been used since 1545 in its most generic form as "a group of soldiers." The specific definition relating to your reply and my reply is 1b; "A cavalry troop 'corresponding' (1a, or 1b) to an infantry company." This is also available online if you Google. @@elmerkilred159 I understand that, but if you read any manual written in America by an American Officer from either side during the war and even before you will see that they only use “Company” to indicate the grouping followed by the letter A - K (sometimes M) Some companies did have names which used troop for instance 2nd South Carolina Cavalry, Company K had the nickname “Brook’s Troop”. This was more common amongst southern regiments as they didn’t have the regulations that the federal army had.

Actually, the McClellan saddle was based on the saddles of the Hungarian light cavalry, the Hussars. "George B. McClellan was an attaché in Europe, where he observed saddles used by the Hungarian cavalry. McClellan improved on this saddle, presenting the War Department with a model ." - Marshall Trimble, True West

Cross referencing known locations they went to and then measuring by time. If you know the average speed of a unit on horseback you just need to know how long you were riding. Ideally you would only use the time measurements in between rest stops though as it was less accurate than simply measuring on the map the distance between landmarks

I don't claim to be a civil war cavalry expert at all but I am a mule person. From what I can tell a trooper using a mule as a mount was pretty rare. During the CW mules were used to pull wagons also they were pretty small between 13- 14H and like horses they were in high demand and the supply of them was highly stressed. They were breaking them and putting them out in the field at 2 yo. After the war during western expansion I've read some stories of an actual troopers using a mule but still pretty rare. What a mule was ridden for was to run a pack train of mules, there is even a Mac mule saddle that has different bars to fit a mule and has a metal horn, the assumption being that if you were riding a mule you were leading a pack train and needed the horn to do so.

My next door neighbor, many years ago, claimed to have a Mclellan saddle which didn't look anything like that. It fitted her odd mistmatched breed looking horse she thought looked like maybe part Morgan. It was black with a white blaze and a very rare roman nose in a light horse. It looked more like a 15 hand part thoroughbred in a lot of ways with pretty light legs. No draft look except for that crazy nose. It retrospect it was probably a mustang or of mustang stock, but I have never seen a mustang quite like that.

I'll surprise you a lot. The most important prototype of this saddle is the Kabardian saddle or Circassian saddle in another way. Circassians participated in the Crimean War. And the Circassian saddle is in the paintings from 1550 and there are historical mentions in the 12th century. This saddle is still produced by Circassians in the North Caucasus. Another proof that it was the Circassians who invented this saddle is that the Circassians have their own breed of horses, which is called the Kabardian breed of horses. This horse is very beautiful and hardy. She is a military horse and there are many historical works about this horse
