The 11 First Tricks to Learn on Skis

Спорт

In this ski tutorial, we show you a progression on how to do 11 beginner ski tricks in an easy and fun way. Learn this in person at one of our camps stompittutorials.com/camps/. We start out teaching you how to pop on skis and once you got that key skill down that you will need for everything else we look into how to jump on skis or straight air as it’s called. To develop the right timing in the air to learn grabs later on we first learn to do a spreadie. We then continue developing key tricks and skills like how to ski switch which then leads us to do both 180s on skis and switch 180s. Lastly, we teach you how to do basic nose and tail butters plus your first box and grind tricks.
Learn from us in reality at our camps:

    A quick tip from a former elite gymnast and trampoline jumper: if you’re looking to spin well, keep your arms tightly to your body! the further out your arms are, the harder it’ll be to rotate as it hinders you by creating a restistance in the air. you can practice this without skiis by jumping into the air and pulling your arms in, then doing it again with your arms wide out. it’ll give you a clear perspective of what i’m trying to explain. the same technique can also be used if you’re ever in danger or loosing control of yourself in the air. put your arms out to slow the speed of your spin, and regain balance. although i hope none of you actually get in the situation of loosing control, some will. it’s important to know exactly where your body is when in the air. practice makes perfect, stay safe guys!

  • @xWood4000

    @xWood4000

    2 жыл бұрын

    You're probably correct about air resistance, but there's another physical phenomena. The angular momentum has to be preserved so the rotation speed is increased because the inertia decreases by pulling in your arms.

  • @orchiduh

    @orchiduh

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@xWood4000 You’re completely right about that, and throwing your arms out won’t always save you from losing control. I should have been more clear about that. I’m glad you brought it up actually, because I find it all very interesting. However, I don’t know how flips are supposed to be done in this sport, so I didn’t want to say anything about it for that reason. When jumping trampoline you’re generally supposed to start rotating halfway through a jump. If we’re talking a simple front-flip or back-flip there’s two-ish steps for it: 1. Jump straight up 2. Tuck in and roll when you’re as high up as you’re going to get. The, almost same, applies for “around the shoulder” type of spins: 1. Jump straight up 2. Start rotation backward or forward a little earlier than max height 3. When upside-down, at max height, start rotation “over the shoulder”. This would obviously not work for a skier, as they’re usually not in the air for such a long time. So I didn’t want to say something out of line and potentially spread misinformation, if that makes sense?

  • @xWood4000

    @xWood4000

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@orchiduh Stomp it has a tutorial on it, you start by learning on a trampoline, and then preferably when ready to an airbag/water landing (or self made jump in deep powder). I can't do flips but the pop seems to make the difference from normal flips, you sort of start the rotation there.

  • @jp4431

    @jp4431

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@xWood4000 air resistance is minimal. Angular momentum also doesn't come into play until you are rotating. The reason it's harder is because of torque. When you arms are out, you need more torque to set off the rotation. Pulling your arms in will speed you up after you are in motion to conserve angular momentum as you said.

    When you said it’s only a normal jump it clicked for me. The reason why we watch these youtubevideos is because we are too scared to do it and do we tell ourselfs we don’t know enough and procrastinate watching videos. This does not only apply in skiing, but to everything in life. He said it’s just a normal jump. I bet you can jump without even thinking about it. Now just jump with skis without even thinking about it. Done. Life is a numbers game. You are not going to do it perfect the first time so you have to ramp up the numbers of tries. You will automatically be better, the more times you tried. Forget about trying to study everything beforehand. Take action boys&girls

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! Pointing the tips downwards made everything look sooo much better, and the landing is so much smoother for my 43-year old joints. It's amazing what difference just one piece of advice can make. Thank you for that! Also, having the patience to wait for the highest point in the trajectory before doing the spreadie changed a lot for me. Finally, it feels perfectly right. I did not get much farther than to the spreadie so I can't comment on the other tricks but my boyfriend just did his first 180 and his first grab after watching your videos. Amazing!

    Mate, this is PEARL. Thank you so much!! I'm a former dancer/figure skater and have fond memories of showing my ski instructor brother how to.....rotate for his helicopter jumps. I was impressed by your intro explaining the correct way to rotate . It is so ortant to keep shoulders and arms square and in alignment whilst airborne, as dipping either way in the air, dictates the angle on which you land. I had the great pleasure of spending a whole day getting some air with uni ski pals years after showing my brother how to jump on land and I can honestly say it was one of the best days of my life.!!!! Keep up the great work which helps us older folk to get re-inspired to "get out there'. Kind regards from Oz. Emily.

    And then you get overconfident and fall 5 meters down a black. Edit: Yes, it can be hard to overcome fear but you make it seem like you can ski anything if you arent afraid. That mindset would kill you

    I know how to do all of these, but this video was a great refresher on technique! You're lucky that Laax has so many frameless/edgeless boxes, learning how to frontside to straight was tough on what the mountains have on the East Coast.
