    Check out the original blog post at - aquariumstoredepot.com/blogs/news/freshwater-eels An editor's note here. Yes, we did include some fish that are truly not considered eels. This would be animals like the Bichirs who are lung fun and technically not eels. Our blog always has more details than our KZread videos, which we limited to at most 12-14 minutes. We always suggest visiting our website to get the full details as they always go more in-depth than our videos.

    Technically the only eels was the so called "Fresh-water" moray eels, at the beginning and the end, they are in fact Brackish-water moray eels to have a better quality of life. Both being found in the order Anguilliformes (eel form fish), they are of the eel group. The others was different species of spiny eel-tail fish, Bichir fish, Reed (Rope) fish.

    Yes this is true. If I did it only on true freshwater eels the video would only be long enough to do a short 😅. I should have just put a disclaimer for the rest that these are not true eels etc

    Actually the first species is a gymnothorax polyuranodon which is the only true freshwater moray eel. It spend almost the entirely of its life in fresh water rivers and even lakes only migrating to the ocean to spawn. The young are born in saltwater and then make their way up river where they spend the rest of their lives.

  • @zebedeemadness2672

    @zebedeemadness2672

    8 ай бұрын

    @@c.miner573 There is suggested evidence that they can live long term in freshwater but it's not a full fact, they are still reliant on saltwater to spawn so are a Catadromous species, so not really a true freshwater. [Quote] Gymnothorax polyuranodon is a shallow-water species, often dwelling in water with a depth of just ten feet (three meters) or less. It is found in shallow marine coastal waters, estuaries, river mouths, and for short distances upriver. [Unquote]

    @@zebedeemadness2672 "However, there is a growing body of evidence which suggests that Gymnothorax polyuranodon is a catadromous species of moray eel, in which the animal spends much of its life in freshwater but migrates to saltwater to spawn. The young eels are born in marine water, and then migrate into freshwater to live out most of its life. When the time comes to reproduce, the adult eels migrate back into the ocean to breed." There has only ever been one record of an adult being spotted in saltwater but they are frequently spotted in freshwater. I myself have a specimen that has lived for 2 years so far and shows no ill effects from being kept in freshwater.

    Almost everywhere I look the tire track eel is considered the same as the zig zag eel. Even at the fish shop where I bought mine they were listed as having both names as common names for Mastacembelus armatus. It looks to me like the mixup is occurring when individuals feed their zig zag eel properly, and enough, to the point that it grows into a large tire track eel while some do not feed or care for their eel to sufficiently grow into a large eel that would resemble a larger species altogether. Anybody have more information or found the same research? Thanks
