Check out the original blog post at - aquariumstoredepot.com/blogs/news/freshwater-eels An editor's note here. Yes, we did include some fish that are truly not considered eels. This would be animals like the Bichirs who are lung fun and technically not eels. Our blog always has more details than our KZread videos, which we limited to at most 12-14 minutes. We always suggest visiting our website to get the full details as they always go more in-depth than our videos.

Technically the only eels was the so called "Fresh-water" moray eels, at the beginning and the end, they are in fact Brackish-water moray eels to have a better quality of life. Both being found in the order Anguilliformes (eel form fish), they are of the eel group. The others was different species of spiny eel-tail fish, Bichir fish, Reed (Rope) fish.

Yes this is true. If I did it only on true freshwater eels the video would only be long enough to do a short 😅. I should have just put a disclaimer for the rest that these are not true eels etc

Actually the first species is a gymnothorax polyuranodon which is the only true freshwater moray eel. It spend almost the entirely of its life in fresh water rivers and even lakes only migrating to the ocean to spawn. The young are born in saltwater and then make their way up river where they spend the rest of their lives.
@zebedeemadness2672
8 ай бұрын
@@c.miner573 There is suggested evidence that they can live long term in freshwater but it's not a full fact, they are still reliant on saltwater to spawn so are a Catadromous species, so not really a true freshwater. [Quote] Gymnothorax polyuranodon is a shallow-water species, often dwelling in water with a depth of just ten feet (three meters) or less. It is found in shallow marine coastal waters, estuaries, river mouths, and for short distances upriver. [Unquote]
@c.miner573

@@zebedeemadness2672 "However, there is a growing body of evidence which suggests that Gymnothorax polyuranodon is a catadromous species of moray eel, in which the animal spends much of its life in freshwater but migrates to saltwater to spawn. The young eels are born in marine water, and then migrate into freshwater to live out most of its life. When the time comes to reproduce, the adult eels migrate back into the ocean to breed." There has only ever been one record of an adult being spotted in saltwater but they are frequently spotted in freshwater. I myself have a specimen that has lived for 2 years so far and shows no ill effects from being kept in freshwater.
@AquariumStoreDepot at minute marker 1:23 what in the world was that beautiful black and red eel. that was magnificent. I need one

Wait, I have a dinosaur bichir but under the name it said Senegal so? Should I go by the bichir or the Senegal part?
Almost everywhere I look the tire track eel is considered the same as the zig zag eel. Even at the fish shop where I bought mine they were listed as having both names as common names for Mastacembelus armatus. It looks to me like the mixup is occurring when individuals feed their zig zag eel properly, and enough, to the point that it grows into a large tire track eel while some do not feed or care for their eel to sufficiently grow into a large eel that would resemble a larger species altogether. Anybody have more information or found the same research? Thanks

My only gripe is that in the first few images you weren't showing just Eels. Birchir's are lung fish, but they are not Eels. That's a common confusion.

That's fair. When we drafted the blog post originally we included them both and added that they weren't. They weren't included in the KZread script. I'll add this to the pinned comment for clarification. Thank you.

@@AquariumStoreDepot no worries. Otherwise I found the video informative and now I know I can add at least 2 of these species to my 75 gal tank
How did you list Senegal Bichir as an eel? I get that you would talk about Polypterus sp when talking about eels because people need to learn the difference but why continue the confusion by calling it an eel? That's like calling a capybara a Guinea pig.
@AquariumStoreDepot

Yes I understand I’ve gotten that before on the blog comments. It should have been cleared up that they are often confused as eels and they got included on here because of that

@@AquariumStoreDepot yeah I get that but you still called them eels. That just adds to the confusion especially for new keepers.
I want an eel that's more like 4 inches. My tank is just a bit too small for a bishir

The best bet even though not an eel would be a kuhli loach

WHAT WAS THAT RED EEL IN THE BEGINNING AT 1:22
It’s not an eel, but if you only have a smaller tank, Kuhli loaches are a good option for that long body type.

Senegal bichir is the smallest size of bichir species. The other bichir species grow to be huge. It’s a mistake on this video to call it “senegal eel”
11:39 the Snowflake Eel should have the scientific name listed as Gymnothorax tile. Surprising that this was missed when at 11:05 the narrator explains it is often confused with Echidna nebulosa (which is a salt water eel.)

Peacock eels are not found in Malaysia
If you want something like eel, then kuhli loach is the best choice.
easiest eel or eel shape fish that is easy to breed ?
@AquariumStoreDepot

Easiest “eel shape” would be a dojo loach. You probably should see my how to eels reproduce video 😅. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/nm2WmLmngKTJmNY.html In short - it’s not practical for aquarists to breed them. It’s complicated 😄
i’ve learned that fire eels can get to be 3 feet!
The senegalus eel is actually a is almost a snakehead

I think so. Some of them are pretty personable. I know when I had a snowflake eel mine definitely was a character
However, the snowflake eel (Echidna nebulosa)and the freshwater snowflake eel (Gymnothorax tile) are two different species. They ARE commonly confused with each other and this video gave me the impression that they were the same. Echidna Nebulosa is not freshwater compatible.
@AquariumStoreDepot

That’s odd - I’m pretty clear that this snowflake in the video is the freshwater kind. The saltwater version looks completely different. I kept Echidna nebuloua for several years. Great eel - just had a taste for nearly everything I put in the tank 😅. I ended up giving mine to the local fish store so it could be houses in a display tank where all the fish were massive.
You should of included tiger moray eels
