Here are my 2 cents. I have been (still am) a car mechanic for 45 years and I have seen the best and the worst and everything in between. I am aware of all the bashing that Saturn ION gets, but the truth of the matter is that, after 16 years and 295,000 km has been trouble free with just regular maintenance and still running strong. Car of the year awards are meaningless. The true test is time, reliability and operating costs.

They need to have a real human doing a little fact checking. Number one is incorrect right off the hop. The Chevrolet SST was a convertible, and that is the only thing right in the first 3 sentences. It was a sales flop, but that does not make it a bad car. It was in a shortened frame from the mid-sized GM sport utility line up. There was nothing bad in that. The engine was a standard LS-1 V8, a rather good, durable, and reliable engine backed up by a rather good drivetrain. The engineering behind the folding hard roof was also well and neatly done. Based on the pictures shown throughout the preamble, it seems that sales numbers are the determining factor in this farce of a video.

AMC Matador of the 1970s. My sister had a brand new one. When you were making a turn, the engine would cut out, you had to get it into neutral, restart it, and gun it to get through the intersection. The dealer and numerous mechanics were no help with this issue.

  • @michaeltutty1540

This one is easy. The float in the carburetor was set about 1mm too high, allowing the bowl to overflow in left turns. If the dealer could not fix that, the mechanics all needed to be dismissed. AMC used Ford carburetors, and it was a well known issue with those carbs, both 1 and 2 bbl. The 4bbl was a whole different world and worked very well indeed.

As a loan officer and later a used car dealer this is mostly BS . The Vega was a don't finance because customers usually won't make payments when the engine blows. The Sebring was poor but the Canadians loved getting a convertible cheap. The rest of the cars were ok or pretty good. One that was an excellent used car was the Chevy lumina because it was so reliable for the cheap cost . To sell used cars they had to keep running after the sale. Gm cars were reliable and fast sellers except two 4 cylinder engines. Fords were all good but were slow sellers. Just because the companies made ugly cars or they didn't sell most were pretty good. I didn't sell Chryslers. Too many knocking and white smoking at the auction

Edsel was not a bad car. The design was polarizing. Still is. The 58 tried to cram 4 models, with two different body shells, into too narrow a space between Ford and Mercury. You could get a nice Fairlane 500 for the same or less money than the Edsel, but it was exactly the same car under the skin. The recession in 58 hit all of the mid-priced market hard.

The trouble with these lists is they are horribly subjective. In this case one of your q0 worst cars makes the list for an interior some "critic" didn't like. Not a safety issue or mechanical flaw an interior design. America has produced cars for over 120 years now a d that made your top 10. Lots of research went into this.

Cadillac made a few bummers. That Cadillac Escalade, the car that can't decide if it's an SUV or a pickup trick, should be right up there. And what's that other ugly Caddy, the Cimmaron? Too ugly ti remember the name.

You folks never list the mid 80's Nissan van. a vehicle so bad, so many recalls, that they were all bought back and crushed on the major dealer lots. In the parts book there is a gap from about 84 to 88 making you think these never existed, but they did. Nissan did a fantastic job of hiding this mistake.

There was nothing wrong with the SSR. Why it is trashed is the price of nearly $50,000 was insane. For that price, buyers expected a high-performance capability. Had it b been $20,000, the so so engine wouldn't have been a problem. The fact that used examples are highly sought after today, proves that had the price point been reasonable, they would have had a top seller.

My best friend had a Sebring convertible that was easily THE most unreliable and trouble prone car he (and anyone we knew) had ever owned. He bought it because his wife really liked the looks of it, so it was mainly her car, but he still drove it a lot because we live in California and having a convertible is something you can enjoy most of the time. A few weeks after he bought the car, we had to drive to San Francisco for a wedding. We had the top going over the Golden Gate Bridge on a beautiful sunny 80 degree day. Halfway across the bridge the all the electrics died, and then the engine died. It wouldn’t start again. This was 9 am on a Wednesday, the bridge was tightly packed with cars, and we were blocking traffic. Not only was it extremely embarrassing, but judging from the way many other motorists were acting, we were going to get. killed. After the hell of that day, the dealer “fixed” the car, only to have it die again as he was driving it home. He owned it for 2 months and stopped driving it because you knew you’d get stranded. He was so glad to sell it he threw a party.

Do you know who compiled this list? Ford. How do I know? A list of the worst cars in American history and it doesn't have Edsel or Pinto? Only Ford would make this list and leave those cars off.

"You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who'd want an Aztek today." Mmmm... I wouldn't be too sure about that. The auction yard I work at saw one come in on a hook last summer and go out... again, on a hook.... after fetching a grand on the block. Not running obviously, but complete and otherwise in pretty good shape. You see, there is a certain group within the car enthusiast community who really go for the weird and the offbeat. The Aztek has its fans and followers, have no doubt.
