The 10 Poorest Counties in Iowa

People in some areas are struggling. This was true even before the pandemic happened. In some parts of the country, there are communities in which the people are stuck in a cycle of poverty, without much opportunity for changing their situation. In this video, we are taking a look at the poorest counties in the Hawkeye State, Iowa.

I think a county courthouse video would be amazing.! I’ve been looking on KZread for a while for content regarding Iowa county courthouses and haven’t really found anything! Plenty of state capitol videos but nothing on courthouses.🇺🇸 Thanks for what you do and I hope you have a wonderful day.

How are these places the poorest counties. When people are making 40+ thousand a year. I probably make 16,000 a year. I don’t consider myself poor. It all depends on what you value most in life the things you want. As long as you have a roof over your head food to eat clothes to wear. You are not poor. It’s all government crap they’re trying to get people to believe so they can get money. I have the best thing in life a person can have Jesus/God. The creator of all things. The only way to heaven. The only way to avoid hell After death. So I have everything.

That's per household, not per person. The median household income in the US is $64944, and these counties are all well below that.

The bottom two tiers of counties in Iowa are generally the poorest. I grew up in the bottom tier, within 5 miles of Missouri and speak from experience (my county is not on this list). The overall general soil quality is much lower than in northern Iowa so the land values are lower. Davis county has a high concentration of Amish which would cut down on high school and college students and result in a single high school for the entire county. BTW, it's WAPello county, not WaPELLO :-)

I grew up in Decatur County, and never felt poor. That’s because the cost of living was low. That should be a major factor in the definition of ‘poor’.

I grew up in Mount Carroll Illinois and all the tv we could access came out of the Quad Cities. Until about 1963 there were only 2 stations, WOC Davenport and WHBF Rock Island carrying NBC and CBS respectively and they shared programs from ABC until 1963 when WQAD Moline came on the air and took over the entire ABC program lineup. I understand that WOC Davenport is one of the first tv stations in Iowa and one of the first tv stations west of the Mississippi River. WHBF boasts of being the first Illinois tv station outside of Chicago. WOC has recently changed call letters to KWQC

I grew up in Lee county Iowa. Lived in Keokuk from birth until adult hood. It’s a shell of its former glory. Steady decline from the 60s/70s onward. Split county seat can be a pain. Certain functions are performed at each end and you may have to go to either depending on what you need to accomplish.

I grew up in Keokuk county 1 county north of Wapello and have never heard it pronounced the way you did, but that is not saying the way you did is wrong. We pronounce our my hometown Sigourney, Sig er ney. Anyway I enjoyed the video and have alot of familiarity with these counties on your list. I have a brother who works in Ft. Dodge, another in Ottumwa, lots of freinds from Jefferson and Lee county and would horseback ride at my uncle's in Centerville as a kid. Also never knew that Lee had 2 county seats.

Some commenters blame Democrats for the statistics provided in this video. However, the decline in soil quality from north to south underlies all of it. And it's been that way ever since the glacier retreated at the end of the last ice age. Repeated Republican administrations haven't affected it one way or another.

I love your videos, I was born in Iowa, Ringgold Co, grew up in Illinois, and came back to Iowa for college in the fall of 1985...Graceland in Lamoni - Decatur Co. which is where my dad's family was from and where I lived from birth to age 2, when my dad took a job in Illinois. I live in Des Moines, now. It's always been well know that the bottom tier of counties in Iowa are among the poorest. Just as you pointed out, they are desperate for the resources that many of us take for granted. They are land locked by nature of being rural, and so far from Des Moines, the closest large city. Anyway, it's fun to see the places I'm familiar with!! Thank you!! Great Job!!
