The 10 Most Overrated Commodore Amiga Games By Amiga Power

Ойындар

Hey Guys OSG back with the second Amiga Power video. Last time we saw the games that were underrated and now we are going to take a look at the games that I would say were overrated,
These are the games that probably hurt us the most as the reviews were like an advertisement and anything above 80% was normally worth buying…. But every now and then we would go out and spend our pocket money on a substandard game on the strength of the review.
Like I said in the first video these cases weren’t as clear cut as the Zzap64 ones but I’ve trawled through the reviews and come up with 10 games that for me had overinflated scores.
So without more delay lets take a look at 10 Amiga games that were over scored by Amiga Power.
Thanks to Codetapper for the awesome amiga cractro

Glad you mentioned Body Blows, I persevered with it back in the day thinking I must be missing something as all the reviews were so positive. Bought it on GoG a while back and lasted about 3 miniutes, pretty much an unplayable mess with terrible AI.

The main problem is the game mechanics, no sense of impact and holding down the fire button to charge a power-up is shite in 2 player mode as your opponent could tell you were doing it a mile off. Also didn't like the art style though the music was great.

Even back in the day when I was but a lad and bought all the (ridiculously expensive on import) UK Amiga magazines, it always amused me when they'd have these highly granular scores as if the reviewers were dissolving the games in some kind of chemical bath and precisely measuring the resulting constituents.

Body Blows seemed to just fill a gap after the Amiga's Street Fighter 2 was so disappointing. I didn't think it had a lot of depth to it and didn't play it much. But both Mortal Kombats were great on the Amiga (especially if you had a 2nd floppy disk drive and 2Mb of RAM for MK2). The title music for MK2 is paula doing some of her best work IMO

Game reviewing was always a bit of a shady business. Today it doesn't really matter because you can just watch someone play the game on youtube or check metacritic for an overview, but back in the day the printed magazines were pretty much the only way to get recommendations unless you knew someone who already owned a copy.

I'd have given a high score to Legends Of Valour.. With the map in the box and the guilds and everything i loved it at the time, a really forward thinking game. (betting on cockroach races? haha!) I don't remember the disk swapping.. Maybe if you had more ram the disk swapping was reduced or something? Or maybe I had two floppy drives.. Jeez my memory sucks. Total agreement about all the others though, what a mess!

Last Ninja 3 on the Amiga is weird: It's uglier than the C64 version even though it has better colors, but somehow worse art. But what really kills it is the Soundtrack. Reyn Ouwehands score on the C64 is a masterpiece, while the Amiga conversion just doesn't do it for me. If we see the game in isolation and pretend the C64 version doesn't exist, then yeah, it's a good, albeit not great isometric action game - 65-70% is arguable. But if we look at the C64 version and then the Amiga version, then I fully agree with your 56% at best rating.

Thanks again OSG. Totally agree with Last Ninja 3 on Amiga. Still got the boxed version, bought on an Amiga exposition in cologne, back in the days. Last Ninja 2 on Amiga was also bad. Only Last Ninja Remix, which is a good port of Last Ninja 1, was outstanding. For some reason LN3 on C64 is also not as good as the predecessors. Graphics and Sound were great but somehow the gameplay felt different and a little more clumsy.

  • @fulgenzio1973
    @fulgenzio19732 жыл бұрын

So much truth. All Epyx games were significantly better on Commodore 64 than on Amiga. Body Blows was crap, but you had to find a title that satisfied Amiga users who drooled over Street Fighter 2 on the Snes. Pinball games were overrated (they disappear in front of, say, Devil Crush on Megadrive or Pc Engine). However many editors of that period were corrupt or influenced by the advertising that was published on the magazines, so often the votes were modified by advertisers (after all it is so even today ...)

Some really dodgy scores awarded here which deffo makes yer think there was some 'fixing' going on....70% for Battle Squadron? 57% for Benefactor and he's scores over 80 for those piles of shite? I definitely agree with Body Blows, a younger me was convinced it was every bit as good as street fighter 2. I played it recently and it is terrible! Good graphics and maybe good music but the gameplay is horrible, horrendous loading times with the disk swapping and why does it take about 5 seconds to get up after each knockdown?. I did enjoy Miami chase though, granted I have not played it in about 15 years so who knows. All I remember is you keep getting pulled over by the police and have to sit and wait for that picture of the cop to load before you can go back to playing. Good vid!

Speaking of ridiculous review scores reminds me of two games that a certain Stewart C Russell of Amiga Computing awarded to Scorpion (93%) & Trained Assassin (95%). They were by the same developer, which makes me wonder if Stewart was their mate or if money exchanged hands. Both games were average at best. He also gave Battle Squadron 109%. Body Blows was very limited but I thought it was just me as the only beatemup I used to play was IK+. Its strange how looking back at some of the Amiga games just how much they have aged and how cramped some games look. 4:11 Sky High Stuntman would have been so much better if they'd just set most enemies as one-hit-to-kill. Requiring multiple shots just ruined the game, and everything felt too zoomed in. Your score of 55% is about right. 5:08 Miami Chase was garbage. You were very generous with your score of 48%! 6:04 Rugby: The World Cup was vastly over-rated. The fact that most of the team ends up occupying the same spot on the map is a total joke. Are they all on each others shoulders or something? The only way to score is to run diagonally out to the side, then fire the ball back across to the other side and do another diagonal run. The best part is definitely the conversions. That name Stuart Campbell again, go figure. I'm gonna take issue with you labelling Graham Taylor as the worst England Manager ever, unluckiest maybe but far from the worst. He got things wrong which he readily admitted but most of the best players he inherited from the Robson era were coming to the end of their careers and the two genuinely world class players not over the hill, Gazza and the emerging Shearer were often unavailable through injury. Add in the cowardly refereeing that failed to send off Koeman and award us a penalty which would have put us within touching distance of qualifying for USA 94 and the dire quality of England players available at the time and I feel he was hard done by. He was a far superior manager to Keegan and McClaren. Yes I am a Watford fan.

Villa had been relegated to the 2nd Division when he took over and he immediately got them promoted and challenging for the title.

Magic Pockets, is an overrated game for me. Get passed the Betty Boo opening and it’s awful.

I loved the Last Ninja games on C64 (Though had left it by time LN3 came out). Last Ninja 3 and Ninja Remix I felt were decent on the Amiga. Even though the latter had much harder skeletons in the dungeon level. Last Ninja 2 was an abomination on the 16bits though.
