MariaPeachKL Me too! I love that. It just shows that Korean brands in general value targeting your skin concerns more with the appropriate ingredients rather than using as many cheap fillers for temporary results. The Korean skincare method is also all about knowledge of helpful ingredients, so they have to deliver even at lower prices. Korean skincare definitely gives major bang for your buck.

I know you kind of hinted at this in your dermatologist/laser treatment points, but I also think the perceptions of purpose in both circles of skincare are different? In Korean skincare, the act of taking care of your skin is focused on prevention--putting in the work early on in order to see positive results for many years down the line. It's a forward thinking, long-term investment. While Western skincare is more focused on reactive treatment--people only try to take care of their skin when they're experiencing an immediate problem, like acne or wrinkles, and neglect to take care of their skin if/when they don't have these problems. They try to address symptoms rather than the actual root causes. Western skincare is focused on short-term benefits and immediate gratification. There's no patience involved. Skincare might seem like a topic only for the very vain, but I think it shows an obvious difference in culture that goes beyond beauty. I think the US could learn a lot from examining the Korean approach to health, imo.

I was going to say the same thing. It's not just in dermatology that this difference is seen. In the US we really don't value preventive health care as much as we should, which is a pity.

Same in europe. Everyone around me is like: "Why would I have an excessive skincare routine when I don't have skin troubles?!" Also I think even western dermatologists think of skincare differently than korean ones. I went to a dermatologist not too long ago and he asked about how I cleanse. I told him I double cleanse "korean style". He then advised me to not touch cleansing oil and rather get a cleansing water that has a lot of alcohol in it and rub my face with that, followed by a harsh cleanser. I was shocked as this is the exact opposite of what research about k-skincare told me lol

I think its also because western pharmaceutical companies are a trillion dollar market and its why western culture is focus on giving your acne/skin problems medicine/steroid and not a holistic approach because that makes less money for them. 😆

Honestly I'm kind of glad I struggled with acne all those years, because on my journey to find a cure, I discovered Korean skincare. It's honestly so much better than American skincare, not just the products but also the way people view skincare in general. People here don't really seem to do much with their skin, unless they already have a problem. I'm surprised you didn't mention sun protection. lol there's been many times I'm applying sunscreen and someone is like "it's not even sunny out", like so many people here have no idea how damaging the sun is for our skin. I hate to be so judgey but damn. Maybe having to struggle with such severe hormonal acne for so long has made me grumpy when people who already have perfect skin don't seem to take care of it.

Heaven Lee You are so right about sunscreen! Morgan might have forgotten since there were so many things to share. I have gotten the same comments and I get worried when I see people sitting under the hot bright sun for hours. Thankfully, my aunt nagged me so much about wearing sunscreen. However, I've had people telling me that their dermatologists told them not to wear sunscreen because it causes cancer. It just makes me feel like sometimes it might be very important to see what dermatologists you visit.

Agreed! From my experience , In the Philippines for example, people would even use umbrellas when it’s hot out as a way of protection from the heat. In the US, most states with a hotter climates find that taboo. They just don’t appreciate sunscreen here as much as other countries do in my opinion.

Also sunscreen. For instance, whenever you see western yt'ers put on makeup they say they have put on moisturizer and sometimes they have spf (which i never hear higher than spf15 or so) and then they go into primer or foundation. But i think most asians will use a separate sunscreen with a higher spf/pa rating.

Morgan lumped all essences into the First Essence category. There are two kinds, First Essences which are the watery fermented stuff you apply before toner, and (normal) Essences which are the same step as serums and ampoules and come after toner and before emulsion, cream. Cosrx Snail does not come before toner!

I don’t use Korean products because I have atopic dermatitis and I have to control the ingredients that get on my face, but I have switched my “philosophy” to more of a Korean approach of prevention healing and protection rather than the one I had before, which was basically “kill THAT problem and never mind what I’m doing to my face to achieve it”, and it’s helped my skin from going to extremes to try and compensate.

Hi, Morgan! I thought the purpose of an emulsion was to, well, emulsify your products. Especially, if you are layering multiple and varying thicknesses of skincare products. Emulsions, I learned, helped all of my "good stuff" blend and, therefore, sink into the pores rather than sitting on the surface of my skin. I loved Mizon's collagen emulsion. It's super affordable, lightweight and I couldn't go without it during my daytime routine - which is 10 steps. Otherwise, my products start to "pill" or pile up on my skin, instead of sinking in. I apply it right before my moisturizer. BTW, love your channel ♡

I’ve realised that western skincare is more harsh and it’s almost made my skin desensitised which made my skin break out more. Recently I’ve started using Korean products which are hydrating, i have combination skin but I’ve figured out that the more hydrating products i use the better because my skin is producing oils excessively because its so dry and the drier patches would become more dry because of the harsh nature of western skincare. If anyone has the same problems then I would recommend trying Korean skincare

Hi Morgan! Can you recommend good toner for people with dry and sensitive skin? My skin is really irritated right now and what I use as a toner is my Garnier micellar water (pink) because it works for people with sensitive skin and since it removes makeup I decided to use it as a toner. and also, is it okay to use 2 cleansers? I use cetaphil for sensitive skin in the morning and the face shop herb day 365 aloe vera foam cleanser at night. :)

I have used the 10 steps Korean skin care for more than 6 years and I do really prefer Korean products. However, having super oily skin type my face gets so oily easily. Sometimes, slapping on layers is just too rich and thick for absorption, hence clogging my pores. Recently, I continued using the same Korean product while minimising my steps to only toner, essence, moisturiser and sleeping mask. My skin now feels more breathable

Thank u so much for ur sharing! It's really meaningful to consider skincare routine afterwards. I've not followed 100% Korean routine, it's the combination of Western and Korean Ones, which depends much on my skin type and issues as well. I used to follow Korean routine and I found it hard for my skin to absorb those products, then it turned out to be a way for acnes to come back. Then I changed the routine: cut down the amount of products + use ones which help to improve my skin + cut down my daily makeup routine (sunscreen, concealer for the under eyes, lipstick). That's just my personal thoughts.

Love your videos! For me, simplicity (but effectiveness) is key. I'm in the US but use products from elsewhere in the world (took a lot of trial and error to find what worked best for me/my skin type) ... cleanser and toner from the UK, serum from Korea, moisturizing oils from Africa, exfoliating product from Sweden, and even some DIY products. It may work for some, but I don't buy into the 10-12 steps routine to skin care; honestly, the less I do to my skin, the better so I stick to the basics. But I do look for products without questionable or irritating ingredients, regardless of "nationality" ... funny that I currently don't use anything from the USA!

When I worked at lush toners were used to set your faces before moisturizing. Which lush is uk brand so its defintly westernized. Masks are usually a 4 step thing and I try not exflotiate everyday. But I do think double cleaning is important I do think I love cleaning balms but I use something after it for a more clean feel to my skin. I think double cleaning in western skincare mostly involves facial wipes but I like cleansing balms more cause it doesn't strip my skin. Also if I plan on exfoliating that will be my first step then I cleanse then i use toner a serum and moisturizer. Although one thing I did think you left out about westerized skin care is the focus on using more hydrating products at night and lighter products during the day. But also from my experience selling skincare I see a huge fear of a skincare routine among western culture. I've had so many customers who were afraid of who saw skincare as a one step solution. Like i had a customer who only wanted a face scrub And their skin was oily and that its not meant for moisturizer even with something lightweight in mind. Which like you said in video skincare is seen as solving a problem rather than basic hygiene routine. I think that the biggest issue with western skincare is its not a habit until it become a problem even though it's as basic hygiene as taking a shower.

I am based in the US, and after many many times comparing prices from all different websites, I've found that I always get the best deals at Jolse. It may not look that way if you only look at the price of a few items, but in the end, shipping costs from other websites are way too expensive. I never pay shipping with Jolse (I think because I always hit the $50 mark?) so the cost ends up being even less than the sites that have "better prices". Also, I ordered from Jolse on Black Friday and I got a text message saying that my order will arrive on Monday December 4th. That is barely any time at all. I live in the Midwest. My first order from them took 3 weeks. I do not know what the difference is.

Amily Tips I'm pretty sure they adopted that from Korean skincare brands. A lot of western companies are now beginning to do that whereas Korean have had it for years

Toners have started to SLOWLY evolve in the U.S. Much of the younger generation has been leaning towards gentle ones like Thayers witch hazel based toners. Also, the US has been having a huge green moment with skincare products. I realize the another main difference currently with Korean skincare and western ones is the education. For example, its difficult to find what products you need for your skin in the US and which ingredients go together and which ingredients don't. And the order and whatnot. No dermatologist will tell you this info. It is basically us researching on our own. Also, ofc, the preventative side of beauty /reactive side western beauty. ALTHOUGH this is changing a lot in the US too. But I do have to say, clearly American brands realize the popularity of a lot of Korean skincare and are influenced by it and are producing more gentle products. However, at the moment, there are just more options with Korean skincare products. There are GREAT green western skincare brands but they're soooo expensive. like Kypris.

The Korean skincare concept of layering through different gentle products is a big deal though.

I have a few questions. Since I wear makeup one day out of the month, can I skip one of the cleaners steps? I use a homemade butter and oil as my moisturizer. Can I use that for the oil cleansing step? Isn't a serum just base oils and essential oils, which would mean I can skip that step to with my moisturizer? Should I add an essence to my skin care routine? Would rose water be considered an essence or a toner? I want to use all natural plant base ingredients only. Thanks in advance.

CaramelSista You can skip the oil cleansing step if you don’t wear makeup, if you want to do it yes any oil based product will melt the makeup away. No, not all serums are oil based, some are water based too, the thing with serums is that they’re meant to be quick absorbing, whether they are water or oil based. You should use serums before moisturizer, other wise it will kind of just sit on top. You don’t have to add an essence, it’s optional, but I don’t see the point of both an essence and toner. Rose water is a toner.

Vicky Martinez Thanks. I decided after watching a few videos, to add a sunblock, rosewater and serum to my regimen. I use to wear a sunblock for more than 10 years up until 2 years ago, but stop using it being Black and all. Lol. Now I realize that even though I'm melanted, I still need to protect my dark spots and skin from the harsh sun. So many of the Korean videos are using both an essence and toner, so I thought I needed both. I'll definitely make sure to put my serum before my moisturizer when I buy it.

I don't how much you understand about Korean skin care, but not all the Koreans have such a complex skin care routine. So some things you mentioned aren't true. I'm just afraid that people can have a misperception or be confused about Korean skin care. If you generalize Korean stuff, it might sound quite awkward to Koreans.

I prefer Japanese skincare. Some of the cheap Korean skin products are absolutely perfumy and doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, there are Korean skincare brands like Sulwasoo, and sum: are really good. They mainly focus on ginseng or herbs and are selling the traditional Korean beauty kinda of things. However, most Korean Make up are crappy, especially eyeshadows. I don’t know how they get away with it. Recommend Korean sheet masks and some of their high-end products, whereas most Japanese products, both makeup and skincare, high-end or drug store are much much better. Also their sheet masks, so affordable and so good. Japanese people literally make best skincare products.

shel B for those brands that are easy to get in the states are Boscia, skii and shiseido. For more high end brands, there are cle de peau ; cosme decorte, the Ginza. And there are many drugstore brands that are amazing such as Kose, Mandom and Biore. Ettusia and Jill Stuart literally have the cutest packaging. Ps. Try moteliner, kiss me and love liner. Because Asian people usually have small hooded eyes or are monolids, their liquid eyeliners are bullet proof.
