The #1 Problem with the Amex Gold Card

Discover the truth about the Amex Gold Card in this video! Despite being a loyal fan, I've uncovered some significant issues that have made me question its value. From inflated prices with monthly credits to limitations on reward multipliers, I'll walk you through the challenges I've faced. Keep in mind that my lifestyle has changed therefore my opinion of this card has changed as well.
The American Express Gold Card is still a solid choice for people who will utilize the 4x grocery store and dining reward multipliers. The card becomes even better if you can utilize the Amex Gold's benefits and credits. However, if you're an Amex Gold enthusiast or considering applying for this card, this video is a must-watch.

Great video chase, the diminishing value for the credits was one of the reasons I canceled my Gold card when it came up for renewal. I am instead using my chase sapphire preferred card for dining and my hotel cards for groceries.

This card essentially forces me to treat myself twice a month by eating out, which I otherwise wouldn’t do. I got $35 back from Amex offers on things that I would have spent money on anyway, and I used all of the monthly credits, so I really can’t complain about the membership for the first year.

TBF if you value it enough, that peace of mind or experience of eating out 2x a month can make it worth it on it's own. And it's always nice to save some money with offers along the way

If you feel forced then don’t keep the card. In my case I Uber every month at least once a month, and usually Grubhub/ shake shack once a month. If it’s a bother then you’re forcing yourself to use this card. A card is should simplify your life.

Shake Shack FTW on the dining credit. My son gets a medium shake, and I get a small. $1.30 a month after the credit is a great father-son experience. I look forward to burning that credit with him once a month. I take an Uber or lift twice a month. The gold credit stacks nicely with the plat credit. Then I pay for it with a Delta card once a month for yet another $10 off. Both of these were lifestyle changes - but both are enhancements. Life is what you choose.

Just used Uber Eats and stacked m Uber credits for takeout at Shake Shack. Uber One helps reduce higher costs a little but $25 in Uber Cash is the real deal when we aren’t traveling. The Costco factor is annoying, but I can still easily find value in the Amex Gold. The credits are a bit annoying too since you are paying a tiny premium even for pickup orders. Nonetheless, my spreadsheet calcs. confirm that our spending on those two categories definitely justifies using this card (that is...until Amex decides to destroy its value on the inevitable AF increase). I actually enjoy the simplicity (very few people talk about the simplicity). My wife and I both use the Gold for all food purchases (minus Costco, of course).

Minus the welcome bonus, I consider the Bilt card a much better dining and travel card than the Amex Gold. Bilt has a baseline 3x on dining, and up to 12x considering (3 base x 2 rent day x 2 transfer bonuses). I never have problems getting Mastercard or Visa accepted at restaurants. I struggle to use the Amex Gold at restaurants with only about a 50% acceptance rate. If they raise the annual fee for any reason, I will surely cancel the Amex Gold.

I find this to be fairly rare. What I get hit by is restaurants coding goofy. Like bistros sometimes code as bars or we had food in a zoo restaurant recently and it coded as charity. I find with Chase the 3X dining is usually less nonsense and goes thru. Probably what they use to categorize is a broader range of mcc codes…

@@ChaseYokoyama it was not my restaurant card, since I use Citi Prestige for that purpose. I was using it strictly for groceries, but then I switched to USB AR, then to Citi Premier, and then to Savor One. But now I just use gift cards which I buy at Staples or ODOM or Fluz. I could be using Custom Cash in combination with Curve, but I just buy a GC with it once a month. 9 GCs every month.

@ChaseYokoyama the dining credit alone makes it not right for alot of ppl. Those restrictions on restaurants alone means most people won't get full $120 value. So the "effective annual fee of $10" that's been parroted across KZread isn't really real.

that is why i am tired of prepaid fee credit card. Many people saying its free trip, its not. You cant outsamrt than company study your spending bahavior. They tell where to spend, how mucb to spend, where to get back and how much it worth it. If they couldnt make huge profits of you, they just change the game either increasing fees or make rules on applying or redeem credit. You never gonna win. Its manipulated market You would think you are the winner but in credit card game, you are the only fool

I like the video, but have suggestions: 1. STOP using Costco, Walmart, Target, and such for groceries. The food is as garbage as it gets. Find a clean store that sell clean food and get the Amex Blue Cash preferred. $6K/year at 6% cash back. If you spend more than $6K/year in groceries, get a 2nd card of the same. At $95/year the math is in your favor. For restaurants, there are plenty of 3% cash back cards, No Amex points for you to trade on it, but getting rid of the Gold Annual fee will be justified at the end of the year. Unless you are making Amex you main set up that cover most expenses and have enough expenses to justify the rewards and credits, it is like throwing money out the window to say "I can". YMMV

Tomato sauce should have nothing but tomato and water at most, pasta should have no more than wheat and water, etc. These large stores are not selling quality food.
