THE #1 OFF GRID Saltwater Fly Fishing Lodge. BUCKET LIST DESTINATION!!

Fly Fish Hunter Merch is here! flyfishhunter.bigcartel.com/
I don't get to go salt water fly fishing all that often. So, when I do go, I have to make the trip count. I want to go where I can fish hard and take advantage of every minute of everyday. I also want to go where I'll have the opportunity to catch as many of the different salt water species as I can. Oh, and having awesome accommodations, food, and killer guides helps too. That's why I choose to fish at Turneffe Flats in Belize. Turneffe Flats is located on Turneffe Atoll, which is about 25 miles offshore from Belize City. This place is 100% off grid and is located in one of the most remote areas in the world. Turneffe Atoll is one of the most biologically diverse atolls in the Caribbean, which means that it's home to all of the major salt water game fish. On any given day, at any given stop, you have the opportunity to encounter Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, Snook, Barracuda and Jacks. Some of the flats are miles and miles long, and most often there isn't another boat in sight. How often do you have the opportunity to land a saltwater grand slam in a single day? Here it's possible, and I've done it.
As a big fan of Turneffe Flats, I asked the lodge owner, Craig Hayes, if he would be willing to visit with me and share how he got this thing off the ground 40 years ago, and what it takes to maintain a facility like this in the middle of nowhere. I hope you enjoy the conversation and some of the snippets from my adventures there.

At 17:00 the guide was so excited, and you fed off that energy. I’ve been there so many times. It’s so hard when the guide is wiped into a frenzy, and you have to actually slow down and concentrate, and sometimes strip slowly while the guide is yelling “Strip, Strip, Strip!” Anyway, I was just there and you made a great video.

Absolutely amazing trip! I have been to Belize once but that was when scuba was a priority. Now I wonder if I had my priorities right ha ha! Love how you toss the rod, untangle the knot, grab the rod and reel in the fish...that's line management at a whole new level !

@@flyfishhunter That is a 1954 CJ3B. I restored it for a customer of mine in CA. I would love to have your CJ8. Those are getting hard to find and very expensive.

Cool Jeff. Have an awesome time. Tell Craig you enjoyed the video. He'll appreciate it. In front of the lodge I recommend using small sparce bonefish patterns. Small bonefish bitters worked well in sand color. Small squimps worked well too. Not too much weight either. Long leaders. Hope that helps and good luck!

What a beautiful place to fish! My wife saw me watching this video and said “I want to go there!”Guess Turneffe Flats is on the list! Awesome to fish right outside the lodge. Is there some good scuba diving spots there as well?

Thanks so much Freddy! Yes! LOTS of people go there for the diving too. Some people split the trip up and do both. They also offer Atoll Adventures where they take you to see manatees, snorkeling, sight seeing, etc. It's a killer place and I know you'll love it!

Pure rejections. Slow down your strips but don't stop. They have really good sight. Lead them well. They might not spook but they already know you are there and what looks like they are going for it is them just checking out what not to eat. The unicorn is smarter than you.
