The $1.00 Windows Me Experience! - Garage Sale Finds
Ғылым және технология
I picked up a boxed copy of Windows Me at a garage sale recently for $1.00. A few other Microsoft programs came along with it. Today we're going to spend almost 40 minutes unboxing and installing all of it!

I love the Microsoft CDs from that era. The crazy holographic designs covering the whole disc were really beautiful.

Microsoft should go back to the old route it's less expensive than all this modern non sense and I feel like it's pretty stupid making everything digital I miss actually using a game disk on a computer growing up. They're easily replaceable and not bound to ridiculous policies and allow you to keep your computer for a lifetime. If Microsoft not saying they will ever go back to Windows XP if they run out of ideas then I'm all in for the support I hate how scattered newer Windows start menus are it's annoying.

I agree!!! He and Linux KZreadr Savy Nik both belong in The Broadcast Fall of Fame.and The ASMR Hall of Fame.
We used Windows Me for about 4 years before getting a upgrade copy of XP. It wasnt super stable but it depended on what you were trying to do since I think the instability was due to changes to the driver model in preparation for switching consumers to the NT kernal. We had a cheap flatbed scanner and I dont know what the driver or software was doing under the hood, but whenever we installed the drivers to use it that install of Me would be dead within days. We had to get rid of the scanner since it was toxic to Windows Me.
Born and raised in Brazil I've never seen an original copy of Windows neither office. They do exist but usually there is two situations: It came with the computer without a box or you bought a pirate one.

When I worked in the stock room at Computer City here in Buffalo, I got a promotional copy of Windows 98. It's not even in a box, it's just a cardboard sleeve that contains the CD-ROM. I miss that place, it was one of the few jobs I loved because we were the first to see the newest hardware and software before we put it out on the sales floor. Good times.
Great Video Michael! 👍👍 20:24 well sung 👍😂

Just curious is there a way to know what song it was.
I LOVED the Windows Movie Maker! Used it all the time for videos and slideshows with audio, which I would burn to CD for friends and family. I was so sad when it was discontinued. Of course better software came along, but I'll always remember Movie Maker very fondly.
16:08 Windows 98 also had the NT startup sound when upgrading Windows 3x or 95 to 98.

@@orbitron The only reason I can think of is they wanted a "cool" sound effect to play for upgrading your computer to Windows ME, and I guess didn't have the time to get something unique. Given that ME was aimed at consumers, most weren't likely to have any experience with NT, so it'd just come across as "oh hey, cool sound."
Back in those days as a teen, I have never been so excited to get Windows ME upgrade over Windows 95... and also office 2000... great memories...
I love garage/yard sales! What a score! I got all my first PCs and parts from garage sales when I started tinkering and building my first PCs in the early 2000s. I started to build my own pc since my dad would complain all the time we were slowing down the only pc in the house that was shared with 5 others. They may have been old parts not very capable of gaming much, but I was happy to have my own pc that i put together that ran.
I remember that my very first gaming PC that I built myself in early 2001 which had a 1 GHz Pentium III cpu with 256 mb of ram. I remember that I originally had Windows ME on it and then I later upgraded it to Windows XP in 2002.
16:18 yes, NT 5.0 Beta DID use NT 4.0 sounds up to Build 1631, when after that it used the actual NT 5.0 startup, but kept the NT 4.0 shutdown. Now I got to note that after Beta 1, NT 5.0 used its own startup. He said "NT 5.0 Beta", but the NT 4.0 startup was never used in the Beta stages, just the shutdown sound was only used.
ohhh, I started designing websites on frontpage 2000 back in 2005! What a throwback in time.
Always love WindowsMe. I've used it since day one and still use it for my retro gaming machine.
I usually come to this channel to kick back and both chill and geek out over tech, but that moment at 20:37 had me laughing out loud. Your jokes are the best! :-)

beautiful package microsoft was doing very well that era, when we bought a microsoft box it was like a wonderful thing.
I used to love playing around in Frontpage and Publisher, now both gone, sadly. Thanks for sharing this!
21:14 My friend and I used to rock to that one Beck song that came with Windows Media Player. We'd sing it poorly to the chagrin of our parents in the car. I'm surprised I haven't been disowned.
Always glad to see a Micheal MJD video in my notifications!
18:06 reflexively prepared to skip ad when that music started.
Microsoft aesthetics from 2000s is so comfy. I am rewatching your old videos ❤ Personally had no problems with Windows Me.
I've got to say, that was a really big brain play for putting capture card footage of the install and programs on a still frame of the setup
I love the days of big box software retail. Flash in the pan but so cool. Stores dedicated to software, ala book or video game stores.
That Windowa ME CD is just gorgeous, wow
I have no idea how you find this stuff!!! Can’t wait for the ~experience~
Got a kick outta this video. Brought back lots of memories.
Love this series :)
Brilliant condition too!
Nice score at the garage sale! You never know what you might find, especially if you get in early.
Ahhh this brings back soo many.
I have the promotional step up (blue box) myself, since the 1st day it came out. I've upgraded my Windows 98 HP Omnibook with this. Strangely enough it seems I am one of the few people that actually liked Me, besides their bugs and quirks (and they had quite a few).

What an amazing find 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Its been a while since I watched this guys video and I remember why I subscribed damn love it!
I actually had a Windows ME machine that I never connected to the internet, complete with Office 2000 already installed. I actually used that machine to type most of my reports and essays in high school between 2007 and 2010.
The start up sound is the best part of Me.
Garage Sale Finds is back! Hooray!
Maaaan Movie Maker took me back. I first used it on Windows 98 and then XP in primary school. And in present day I edit videos for a living :') (also, jelly of your boxed OS collection)
Windows 2000 is still one of my favorites. Used practically no resources and was super stable.
19:30 its like a custom welcome skin going with windows media player, and we can see it only waching this wellcome video after the system installation. i remember something around it from my computer experiense when i was about 10 y o and doing experiments with those win9x OSes on my first PIII machine. i think then i had found this skin in one of media player folders. sry4myeng, its not my native, so and thank you Michael! so nostalgic content!. как у нас говорят, ламповый видос)
FACTS!!!!!! Thank you so much man, you're the best!!!!!!!!!
Shockingly, I had minimal issues with windows ME back when it was still relevant. I had bought my first brand new desktop with it preinstalled, and for word processing and email it wasn't too bad. I did end up purchasing Windows XP home about two years later, but in the time I used it, it was pretty damn good!
To be honest in the past, when I was a kid, I remember windows ME has so many bugs and crashed so many times, we used the windows 2000 which was based on the NT system. We're more stable at this time. They just released the ME together with the 2000. One for the office and businesses and the Me was for "home" users.
I had Windows ME on my first PC. I remember people complaining about compatibility issues, but I never had any problems. But I upgraded to XP when that came out.
I remember back in the day my buddy had a brand new Micron Windows ME pc that he'd just gotten. I was jealous and wanted to upgrade my 98 to ME. Somehow we managed to get the OEM restore CD from the Micron to load up and install on my machine. I dumped it a day later but I remember being so excited to load it and then promptly found out it was trash. Frontpage on the other hand I loved. It was great for editing style sheets and the split-view (code-wysiswyg) was my favorite.
The design of the boxes are NICE
MJD you have a hilarious dry sense of humor

I love retro tech
Had Windows ME on my first Compaq computer in 2000. Its startup song wss the best, so good I put it on one of my CD mixes lol. So manh memories, though I try to forget all the issues it had lol
really nice man!! i should be more involved in old pc stuff and doing real vids like you do!!
So, the "Promotional step up" was sold in a store, but the "Standard" one was promotional and not for sale in stores. 🤔 I'm joking, lol. I just find it funny.

Nice vid! Fun fact i actually got curious and looked up project and apparently it comes on at least 11 discs (looks like it could be more but the old listing i found in ebay only showed the discs in stacks with 11 at the top of one)
Great video Michael, I just love those unboxing & install vids...awesome stuff 😉
7:44 If you look at the art with more distance you can see a completed puzzle containing of 4 pieces at the 2000 version the version on which I build my first completely own build websites :D
Yay new video
When Michael went all "What were they thinking?" I immediately thought of the Angry Video Game Nerd, he says that a lot. Also, I feel oddly nostalgic towards Clippy, my junior high years were spent with Office 2003 and Windows XP.
best website totorial ever lmbo ur awesome man love your videos god bless🤣😂
Promo copies are usually given to employees, important customers or handed out at trade shows I think. My promo copies are from trade shows and conferences at least.
In high school they had us using Frontpage 2000 and it made me so frustrated. We were able to get funding after the first month to get Dreamweaver (was Macromedia at that time) and it was amazing night/day difference. I loved it and making the school’s website went from shitty to amazing (I was the webmaster so all my stuff had to be a tier above everyone else’s, and I think I managed it, imho).
30:05 logo design is my passion
Nice new desk!
The first computer I actually owned -- as opposed to being a hand-me-down from my dad -- had Windows Me on it. I must admit the only real thing I did on it was change the Windows Media Player skins and play around with the fonts. Oh yeah, and play Baldurs Gate 2 and Icewind Dale on it and write silly fantasy stories. I got it when working in Ireland and it was a fixture in my first independent flat after I moved out of my mum's. I made up mix tape inlays on it. Happy days.
Love your channel
The old windows setups played the startup sound of the version of windows you are running.
full nerdgasm,thank you!
I used to use that office update site alot around 2002 to 2005
Loved your singing skills LOL
You got to sail over ME and go straight to XP. I wasn't so lucky. It was... a difficult time to say the least. Y'ever see multiple bluescreens stack on each other? It's a regular bluescreen but all the memory addresses kept changing. It was incredible. Using TweakUI from a pc mag coverdisk, I modded my bluescreen to make it a little less intimidating.
MJD's Awesome Gate Company😂
Those are nice fines!
16:08 i heard that too when i put my windows me disc into my windows xp pc
I can't believe you managed to use Windows Me without a bluescreen within 30mins. At launch when I upgraded, it would be a dice roll if Winamp mp3 playback and being connected to the internet via dial-up was too much for the OS. I rolled-back to Win98SE and then up to an XP Beta fairly quickly.
Woah new table
Hi Michael, If you want to revisit the "SSD in the 98 PC" idea; you can! If you use a PCI SATA Controller (with a BIOS), you can use more of the potential speed of the SSD! I'd love to see you try!
lookin good
Very good :)
I randomly got a free 'promotional copy' of Windows Millennium upgrade edition sent to me. I have no idea who sent it, or why because it just turned up on my door one day. No note or anything suggesting who it was from, but it was addressed to me. I think I had upgraded to AMD's new 1Ghz Athlon CPU around the same time, it was a big issue as they broke the 1Ghz barrier - so I've always assumed it was something to do with AMD. I don't quite remember the specifics. While I don't remember the actual upgrade to Windows Millennium, I remember most of the additional features not working here in the UK. I think one of them was Internet over TV (or something like that) and it just didn't even work with my ATI All-In-Wonder TV card (but that could have just been ATI's poor driver support). I think I quit using it pretty quickly as I went back to Windows 98SE until XP. From what I remember, I'm pretty sure it messed up my config/autoexec custom boot settings for games and I couldn't boot back into DOS. I still have the Windows Millennium upgrade disc itself.
Having never used windows movie maker i am impressed with it given it was free (with Windows) and at the time there weren't alot of options
Cool video boi
19:15 nice rhythm
I've never seen Michael casually type "comic sans" before🤣
I also got a boxed copy of Office 2000 Pro, but the book in Pro ver. is thinner Also a sealed copy of Windows 2000 box. The last one that doesn't require an online activation.
Windows ME was a version of Windows that had lots of new features, but thanks to being MS-DOD based, it became a quite unstable OS. Well... Thanks to Windows ME, Microsoft learned a good lesson and made Windows XP, as everyone wanted this OS to be.
