That time the SOE and Greek Resistance nabbed a General | Crete 1944

Major Leigh-Fermor and Captain Moss, dressed as German corporals, flagged down the general's car on the isolated road. Working quickly, they restrained the driver and - with Leigh-Fermor now impersonating the general in the front of the Opel staff car, they bluffed their way through some 22 German checkpoints in Heraklion with their captive hidden in the back.

@@UlyssesFiles no problem. I get very tired of "greatest general" and eternal mythmaking of glorified egos when the reality is a great deal more messy. If it weren't for the pluck and courage of people like Major Leigh-Fermor and Captain Moss or Paddy Mayne, the Allies would not have won. Their stories are too often to lost in the echo chamber cacophony of Montgomery. The stories deserve to live. What is always so striking is the resolution and brotherhood that goes beyond nationality or cultural borders to defend a world against Nazi atrocities.

Very well said. If it weren’t for these characters the allies would have got nowhere 🙌🏻

Minute 4:04 we have Brad Pitt's dad on the left. On a more serious tone, the operation was not worth it. Taking the general made no difference to any allied plan, neither did it hinder the Germans as they had generals to spare. The only ones who were affected were those who were murdered and those who lost them forever.

The Cretans themselves seem to have been positive about it overall as far as it being a major boost to morale. However, from my own point of view I’m inclined to agree with you. The reprisals were awful

This was a bold and courageous plan that couldn’t have succeeded without local Cretan support. The question always arises was the action worth the reprisals that would inevitably follow? In any case a very interesting episode I had not previously heard of.

Yes it’s one of my favorite operations of WW2. Your question is important. The value of such an action has to be carefully considered in terms of the reaction. In this case it was terrible. Yet Cretans seem to have supported it on the whole. I’m still not sure it was actually worth it, personally.
