    @@JohnDoe-wq5eu You can really see that Sega of America was never thinking far enough ahead, and was solely fixated on the here and now. They had to have a new Sonic game EVERY YEAR. They had to have some sort of hardware upgrade EVERY YEAR. Yes, the 90s were a very different time. This was the era when a computer which was considered "top of the line" one year would be unable to run the following year's biggest games without some kind of hardware upgrade.

So it had this weird drama mixed with kinda comedy and the animation style of the more comedic Sonic show and then (awful) music. It was just a hodgepodge of stuff. Add to that a bunch of non-canon original characters that never appeared in anything else and you just have a very forgettable kind of show. The only reason I think most people remember it is because it was such a weird out of nowhere version of Sonic. Oddly enough, the Archie comics started out much closer to the light-hearted "Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog" series and then quickly shifted into being more like the "Sonic the Hedgehog" cartoon. Then, after 50 issues, they scrapped both of those and created a storyline that turned Robotnik into Eggman so it was more in line with the games. The lore of the comics - which are still on-going although now under the IDW banner - is truly bonkers.

Not to mention he badmouthed Ben after the latter's passing. AND he has recently announced the release of the first chapter of his comic, "THE LARA-SU CHRONICLES" (he likes using capslock for brand names), which turns out is just a reprint of the "25 years later" storyline from Archie Sonic, just with a single page to connect it to later chapters And probably more that I can't remember. SatAM is also genuinely a ton of fun. It's fully aware of the kind of character Sonic is, and so throws him into a new, darker setting whilst keeping his daring-do, wits and bravery intact. The end result? Some of the most fun you could ever have with an adventure show that also does the titular character justice (at least in Season 1, which I'm familiar with). I also dig how they actually made a reason for Sonic to use the Rings he picks up, not unlike what the film series would do in the present day.

    Man, Sonic was the cornerstone of my childhood and teen years, honestly up to adulthood too. I actually got Issue 0 of the comic off the rack at a Walden Books. Then the SatAM cartoon premiered the weekend I was forced to move to a new town because my folks split up, it was a balm to me seeing my favorite videogame / comic book hero in a gritty and mature cartoon. I actually resented Adventures because it felt like a dumbed down version of the show. But long after the cartoon ended, I kept up with the comic right up to the end. It broke my heart when the comic ended, just 20 issues before it hit 300! But like most 90s kids I found the internet Sonic fan base. I mainly looked up stuff at TeamArtail for years and that was my introduction to "Original Character (do not steal)." I came up with a few myself as well as inserting the idea in my own crazy fanfics of Sonic getting a Guyver unit (hence my name). I'm even a Patreon of Team Sea3on.

It far outlasted the shows and lasted for over 200 issues. Sonic as a franchise is very much held together by the fanbase. For further examples beyond Team Sea3on, look at the writing credits of last year's Sonic Frontiers and the entirety of 2017's Sonic Mania. Both games are fully published by Sega.

    The finger thing was probably for two reasons- Internally, Sega had a rather strict style guide illustrating exactly how to depict Sonic across games and media. Though, DIC wasn't bound to follow that and Sega of Japan already didn't like how he was looking in the show. Second reason is title screens and game boxes, where Sonic's fully fingered hands are very visible and feature him holding up a finger to indicate which game it was. Since they had just finished 2, were starting on 3, and spent a lot of time and money on those title intros, box art, and subsequent marketing- they were making sure the show and comics didn't conflict with that.

    I'm surprised you guys didn't mention Long John Baldry as Dr. Robotnik in Adventures. It's such a unique take on the character that I've yet to see anyone replicate his deliciously hammy performance. I just wish he were still around to know of his legacy despite AoStH being considered the lesser of the two shows.

    @SoulcialEpiphany

    Жыл бұрын

    @@andrewcarlton6196It's a bit more complicated than that. The SatAM storyline "continued" throughout the Archie publication for at least a decade and 200+ issues. A combination of factors ranging from Sega of Japan taking more control over the game series' direction to one of Archie Comics' main writers(Ken Penders) suing for intellectual ownership for his contribution to the comic series that pushed the SatAM concept into the greyest of Grey Areas of the entire franchise. Once SEGA and Bioware collaborated on a Sonic RPG called Sonic Chronicles, Ken Penders filed lawsuits against all three entities on the premise that Chronicles used his ideas without compensation. This caused Archie to reboot the comic series with a new writer, Ian Flynn. Often called the Post-Genesis Wave run, Ian and a few others(including Evan Stanley, Tracey Yardley and Spazinite) were able to salvage much of the comic's lore and in turn meld it into something closer to the game series that's still praised to this day. (There's about several breakdown videos about Ken Penders floating on KZread including a video by ComicDrake which I would recommend.) But in short, Ian Flynn is still writing for the Sonic series and has publicly reaffirmed that he and the others have plans to reimplement the Freedom Fighters into the IDW Sonic series(or games series as a whole) and is continuously pitching the word to SEGA higher-ups for the green light. Not too long ago Morio Kishimoto, who's one of the producers of the recent Sonic Frontiers game, expressed interest in bringing the Freedom Fighters into future Sonic content such as a mainline game. All of this is to say that it's not a matter of "if", but a matter of "when"; fandom discourse be damned.

  • @JohnDoe-wq5eu

    @@SoulcialEpiphany Yeah Ken Pender's is one of the worst people to ever get involved with the Sonic universe. He really did cause a lot of problems and basically forced Sega to make changes and retcon things, which sucks. I'm glad that the freedom fighters are completely basically blackballed from the Sonic universe entirely that's always good news. But it's a shame that his behavior probably guaranteed that we'll never get the official animated conclusion to the SatAm storyline which again,sucks.

    My best Sonic memory from my childhood was winning a copy of Sonic 3 from a McDonald's sweepstakes. Early '94, McDonald's had jumped on the Sonic 3 hype train leading up to its release on February 2nd, a.k.a. "Hedgehog Day." I was 9 and enjoyed the two cartoon shows, but I didn't even own a Sega Genesis. I did log many hours of playing Sonic 2 on the demo unit at my local video store the prior summer, so I was deeply a Sonic fan. So I persuaded my dad to take me to McDonald's to get a Sonic 3 Happy Meal and enter the sweepstakes. I filled out the sheet of trivia questions on the side of the Happy Meal bag and mailed it to the enclosed address. Five months go by, and I forget about the sweepstakes. I'm outside playing with friends on a warm May day, and my sister tracks me down because a package had arrived in the mail for me. I open it and I'm thoroughly shocked to find a copy of Sonic 3 and an index card congratulating me for winning the sweepstakes. But since I don't have a Genesis to play it on, I talk Dad into buying me one for Christmas later that year as my one and only present. Fortunately enough, it was bundled with Sonic 2, so now I had both Sonic games to play on my new Sega Genesis console.

    For personal matters both Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon shows are good in their own right. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog is a good saccharine cartoon show with 65 episodes in one season that's fun, sweet, and light-hearted and it has friendship, compassion, and love with the vile villain Dr.Robotnik trying to take over Mobius but Sonic will always defeat him at every turn and there's the hilarious slapstick humor that makes the show funny as well. But what I find disturbing is Sonic and Tails running all over Mobius and not having a home or place to live. Everybody should have a home and Sonic and Tails could've bought or built a home either way. Sonic the Hedgehog SATAM is great and stands the test of time which is darker and edgier than the light-hearted cartoon show Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog SATAM has drama and love in it as well. Sonic the Hedgehog SATAM is full of action, adventure, and greatness and it's based on a true story with 2 seasons and it should've gotten a 3 season a long time ago about a ragtag bunch of misfits all teaming up who call themselves the freedom fighters and living in a village called Knothole Village they call their home and they make plans to defeat and overthrow the tyrannical Dr.Robotnik that is scarier than his previous version of the light-hearted cartoon show Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog who has taken over and polluted Mobius and even though the freedom fighters have their differences they put them aside and work together to stop, defeat, and overthrow Dr.Robotnik and restore Mobius to it's former glory. Now this is more like it in Sonic the Hedgehog SATAM Sonic and Tails finally having a home and a place to live and no more running around Mobius. Sonic the Hedgehog SATAM is arguably the best Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon show that stands out and comes out on top and Sonic and Tails have a team of freedom fighters with them to save Mobius and the world.
