"THAT SOUNDS LIKE QUALIFYING!" The Story of the 1998 Hungarian Grand Prix

Спорт

Schumacher's bad bits always stand out, but when he needed to he'd knuckle down and produce stuff that's embedded in the history books.
At a track where overtaking is difficult, Schumacher managed to bang in hotlap after hotlap at Brawn's request to overhaul Mika Hakkinen and take advantage of a bit of luck to reduce a 16 point deficit to a 7 point one.
So what did they do? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

there is small interesting tidbit: when Schumacher took the lead and began his "qualy stint" he actually misread the gap he was shown on the pitbox. He thought Hakkinen was actually closing the gap. He also mistook the Minardi of Tuero for the Mclaren which actually led to his short stint through the dirt in the last corner of the track. That stint cost him nearly 5 seconds but it was still enough to beat the Mclarens that day.

Other than the engineering of F1 it's those times when great drivers/teams just throw down everything they have and have these otherworldly performances, above their level, that has made F1 so incredibly good. Of course when we go several seasons without those performances and with the tight technical rules of today it's getting more and more rare to see.

Was Schumacher's strategy changed at his first stop already? Him dropping behind Villeneuve wasn't really planned I guess, although it allowed Schumacher to show he was really faster than the McLarens. He only couldn't pass them on track, so Ferrari short-fueled him to undercut the McLarens at the second round of pitstops. The undercut was quite strong, as tire degradation was high. McLaren then made several mistakes; they pitted Coulthard one lap after Schumacher, but fueled him till the end of the race, so he had a long stop and dropped behind Schumacher. They then brought in Häkkinen a few laps later, so he got undercut as well. At the same time, Häkkinen's car developed some problem and for the next few laps he decided to fight Coulthard for whatever reason, which cost Coulthard valuable seconds. When he finally was released, Coulthard couldn't match Schumacher's pace because he was carrying way more fuel (Coulthard's second stop was quite early, which gave Schumacher plenty of time to exploit his weight advantage). Even with a mistake Schumacher managed to build enough of a gap to stay in the lead after his third stop. Apart from that mistake Schumacher did well, but it was more McLaren defeating themselves than Ferrari brilliance.

The mechanical problem on Hakkinen's car started just after Schumacher passed him during the pitstop (or maybe one lap later at most). This was obvious as he previously had a 3.5 second gap on Coulthard and was obviously quicker, but just one lap after the pitstop Coulthard was right on him having gained 1.5 seconds on his teammate. That would have been impossible considering Hakkinen's pace and the reason Ferrari's strategy succeeded is entirely due to Hakkinen's mechanical issue. Without that, maybe he would have been able to beat Coulthard but not Hakkinen. IMHO the best race of Schumacher that season was Buenos Aires, as it was the only time he actually was quicker than both McLarens (at Magny-Cours the McLarens were blocked by Irvine for most of the race, at Silverstone Hakkinen completely dominated and had a huge gap on Schumacher until he made a small mistake after the safety car, at Spa Hakkinen was eliminated at the first corner, at Monza Coulthard was quicker until his engine blew up once again).

Passing mika on the track in monza when *both* has gone through dc's smoke and oil cloud France was on merit, was it not, based on quali? Michael made what would have been a boring one sided championship season exciting. He did the same in 97.
