    Dorothy Wainwright was one of the best characters in the series. It was a shame there were not more episodes with her. She was the only straight talker in the show....... that cute little overbite of hers only added to the way she spoke. I watched the entire series as a kid when it first came out and now have it on DVD. It is the best comedy series ever produced by a long shot..... far more clever and intelligent than Fawlty Towers.

    Since they are independent of the Civil Service, political advisors like Dorothy Wainwright in the series are free from the political stress to ask politically sensitive questions, which will make politicians and civil servants anxious.

  • @qichen85

    @qichen85

    2 жыл бұрын

    They are not free either. Remember that previous political advisor, Frank Weisel, who was effectively fired by tossing him to a long trip because his questions don't benefit Hacker or Humphrey. Dorothy gained Hacker's favor because she is on Hacker's side and she only asks the sensitive questions that helps Hacker. That's the key difference. The later part is, in fact, far more important and determines if you are shipped off. Remember, independent and free are not synonym to each other.

For example. oh I don't know Lisa Simpson from the Simpsons that is literally smarted than all of them combined, but I hear what you are saying, animation does not count. Lets go to live action, shall we? Most of the women in the Walking Dead (they are pretty much all bad asses) Gina Carano in the Mandalorian, Gwendoline Christie in Game of thrones, Stephanie Beatriz in Brooklyn 99, but I can already sence what you are thinking, those are all modern TV shows, so lets look at some 80s-90s. Lucy in Xina, Gillian Anderson as Skully in X-files, Lynda Carter as wonder woman and those are just some of the ones I can remember, I can go on with favorite shows from my childhood that featured great and strong female characters, in-fact I dare to say that because of people like you, now our female characters are Marry Sues, instead of Sigourney Weavers Ripley

    The value of the pension is determined by smoker or non-smoker. My favorite part of "The Smoker Screen" was when Sir Humphrey Appleby said that since smokers die younger, they save the treasury a fortune in pensions and social security. It more than makes up for the NHS expense of smoking related disease.

    How much of the salary comprisrs of "" allowances, Sir Francis ? A modest portion... London city allowance - Dorothy... Is that counted as part of ur salary, Sir Francis? Allowances do not comprise as part of the civil servants salary, Dorothy, am sure u'd know... Are they, the allowances, returned to the treasury? Most certainly not Dorothy... Allowances are given to the civil servants to meet a certain standard of living befitting their status , takibg into consideration, the nature of duties they perform in the interests of the sovereign... How much, 25 % or 50% of the civil servants salary cimprises of London city allowances? Around 35-40%... Why's the Healthcare system, the NHS in comolete shambles, Mr Humphrey... How many nurses & Doctors on the govt NHS - payroll, Humphrey? 6530 nurses & 4250 Drs plus Junior fresher Drs... technicians... And the number of patients? Itsca long waiting list, round the year, Dorothy... Why's that, Humphrey..... Shortage of qualified staff, Dorothy... Whereve all the Drs & nurses gone, vanished? Hv the medical colleges shrunk? Not in the least, Dorothy... Pvt hospitals... multi speciality ones hv sprung up..... hvng a glitzy corporate look n feel... highly qualified professional MBA marketers employed by these Pvt hospitals.... And what kind of marketing these highly qualified MBA professionals are engaged into, Humphrey? Offering discounts on Dominoz pizza ? 2 free tkts to the Lord of the rings movie on a weekend? Why not shut down the NHS altogether? What'll happen to the thousands of qualified nurses & drs n technicians? The PM would be in an embarassing spot... Am sure he'd never concur to such an outrageous thought... Then why allow soo many pvt multi speciality hospitals? To meet the pent up demand... year long wait lists.... what would a patient in need of acute emergency aid do? Book a slot in the graveyard, Mr Humphrey ? On the contrary, he'd be guided most helpfully by the highly qualified professionals... n sent on the nxt available flight to, Bombay or Madras... And the travelling, hotel stay, expenses? who bears? London corporate pvt hospitals - Sales n marketing promotion expenses? allowable tax deduction expense? It'd be a most profitable expedition for the English patient, Dorothy... In fact he'd end up saving a considerable sum of sterling pounds! And the quality of professional attn & treatment in India, Bombay n Madras n Delhi? At par with the West or dare i say notch superior... for the Drs recommended are most of the ones hvng spent considerable time in London / EU / US - hospitals... its a well oiled professional network... Integrated tightly by the giant Pharma & Insurance corporations Mr Humphrey? U see given the Rupee - Pound / USD value its a win win equation for our citizens.. besides the pvt super speciality hospitals in Bombay, Madras, Hyderabad, Bangalore are patronised, exclusively n largely by the Emirati Arab - Isam - Sheikdoms of entire Middle East.... Our patients, Britishers, are made to feel a Dubai / UAE / Kuwait / Bahrain stay!!! On steroid aggressive sales & marketing staff in the Indian super speciality corporate hospitals, promoting medical tourism... And if the fastidious, Arab - Islamic Sheikdom is satisfied n happy with the professional attn & devoted care recd by him / her, absolutely no chance of even remote harm to our patients... Would u prefer Mr Humphrey to be treated in India instead of London ? Mr PM would most certainly preempt such an exigency, i'm confident... After all its the matter of the defence of the realm, isnt it Mr PM?
